These are external devices in the form of braces or shoe inserts that are designed to control and support your ankle. The one most commonly used is an ankle-foot orthotic (AFO). Ankle orthotics is useful to help control or correct muscle deformities and imbalances along with providing stability to your ankle. When using an ankle orthotic they control your ankle directly and can be used to control your knee indirectly by fixing any problems you have. By holding your foot and ankle in position, it can help to prevent things like rolling of your foot or drop foot during walking or running.

Ankle Orthotics

When a person has drop foot, they do not have the ability to flex their foot up to clear their toes when walking. By wearing an ankle-foot orthotic equipment, it helps maintain your foot at a ninety-degree angle or more so you will not trip over your toes when you swing your leg forward. Rolling of your foot can be either supination or pronation. Supination is the rolling out of your foot. When you move your foot, it results in the upward position of the sole of your foot, leaving the outer edge of your sole to carry the weight of your body as you run or walk. With pronation, it is the rolling in of your foot. It is the normal movements that your foot makes to absorb the impact of running or walking and occurs when your heel strikes the ground with your foot dispersing the impact by flattening and stretching the arch of your foot.

Ankle Orthotics

Either of these can cause pain in your back, legs, and ankle along with creating instability that can increase the risk of you falling. By wearing an ankle orthotic it can help to control these abnormal movements, decrease the pain symptoms, and increase your balance. There are two main types of ankle orthotics.

Ankle Orthotics

• Brace—wearing this will allow for normal bending of your ankle up towards your knee. It is used by individuals who have a minor problem or deformity and are active. Braces can also be a limiting ankle orthotic, which will totally limit the motion of your ankle. It is used for individuals who have chronic problems or severe deformities. When using braces they are made to encompass your ankle and part or all of your foot in order to provide proper movement and support.

• Shoe inserts—this type of ankle orthotic are plastic inserts that go directly into your shoes to allow for ankle support that is necessary for proper movement.

Ankle Orthotics

Most of these are custom made but you can get prefabricated ones that are designed to help control foot drop. The prefabricated ones are primarily used for training purposes.
