  • 1. Form definitions of global warming, climate changeand greenhouse effect based on priorknowledge, class discussion, and viewing videos anddiagrams. Hypothesize about the causes and effects of globalwarming on the climate and the worlds populations. Analyze global warming diagrams and resources toobtain a clear understanding of this scientific process.

2. Activity:The class will watch a 3-minute video aboutGlobal Warming.Be sure to look for Causes of Global Warming Nature of Global Warming Effects of Global Warming 3. Refers to the rise in thetemperature of Earthsatmosphere.Earths temperaturehas risen by 1.2 - 1.4Fin the last century. Sea level has risenapproximately 1 inch 4. Causes climate patterns tochange 2000-2009 was the hottestdecade on record. Different from ClimateChange Projected increase in earthstemperature for the nexthundred years 2 to 11.5F 5. Its calledGreenhouse Effect because 6. Greenhouse effect is atmospheres natural ability to store theheat radiated from earth. A layer of greenhouse gases mainly water vapor, lesseramounts of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone. Acts as a thermal blanket for the Earth, absorbing heat andwarming the surface to a life-supporting average of 59degrees Fahrenheit or 15 C. (http://climate.nasa.gov/causes) Due to several human activities the amount of greenhousegases increase in the atmosphere. More heat stays on earththus warming the earth (Global Warming). 7. Chemical compound or gas found inearths atmosphere Allow suns energy to enter ouratmosphere. The primary or naturally occurringgreenhouse gases (GHG) in Earthsatmosphere are water vapor(H2O), carbon dioxide(CO2),methane (CH4), nitrous oxide(N2O) and ozone (O3). 8. Carbon Dioxide Released through natural processes and through humanactivities such as deforestation, land use changes, andburning fossil fuels. (http://climate.nasa.gov/causes) Major contributor to enhanced greenhouse effect Lasts up to 30-95 years in earthsatmosphere 12. Water Vapor Most abundant greenhousegas Generated by evaporationand removed bycondensationMethane Emitted from production ofcoal, oil and natural gas Produced from livestockand agricultural practices 13. Nitrous Oxide Emitted by bacteriain soils and oceans Resulted from certainagricultural practices(fertilizers) Also considered anair pollutant 14. Refers to any significantchange in the measuresof climate lasting for anextended period of time. Includes major changesintemperature, precipitation, or wind patterns, andother effects that occurover a long time. 15. ClimateChangeisdifferent from GlobalWarming. Global Warming is the cause and Climate Change is the effect! 16. Increase in Carbon Dioxide Concentration Global surface temperature (Global Warming) Arctic Sea Ice Land Ice Sea Level 17. Warming is experienced in northern andsouthern regions of the Philippines. Northern Luzon and Mindanao have dried themost. El Nino and La Nina phenomena Extreme weather events like damagingtyphoons, floods and landslides 18. Can we change climate change? What can we do to minimize the effects of climate change? 19. Using the references and resources given toyou answer this question.Has human activity caused the worlds climateto change over the past 100 years?Write your answers on the Global WarmingVenn Diagram handout. 20. http://climate.nasa.gov/causes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenhouse_gas#cite_note-kiehl197-13 http://www.eia.gov/oiaf/1605/ggccebro/chapter1.html http://knowledge.allianz.com/environment/climate_change/?119/what-is-global-warming http://epa.gov/climatechange/kids/faq.html http://www.clean-air-kids.org.uk/globalwarming.pdf http://www.doe.gov.ph/cc/ccp.htm http://www.globalwarmingfacts.net/ http://environment.about.com/od/faqglobalwarming/f/greengases.htm http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/683450/greenhouse-gas http://climate.nasa.gov/causes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenhouse_gas 21. http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Technology/Pix/pictures/2008/04/23/Cloud460x276.jpg http://media.propertycasualty360.com/propertycasualty360/article/2012/07/02/iStock_000004159633XSmall.jpg http://www.earthtimes.org/newsimage/quick-easy-cut-global-warming_112112.jpg http://www.kennett.co.nz/rameka/uploaded_images/You-Control-Climate-Change-773583.jpg http://www.organiclifestylemagazine.com/images/issue-8/climate-change.jpg http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR0fr-royYauwN-o6vba5mXc_0YZEEFh7ZtEd5qEIMMS-z9foR6 http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2012/01/17/timestopics/global-warming/global-warming-sfSpan.jpg http://blogs-images.forbes.com/jamestaylor/files/2011/05/0115_climate-change-earth_416x416.jpg http://www.globalwarmingisreal.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/06/global_warming_earth.jpg 22. http://www.nps.gov/goga/naturescience/images/Greenhouse-effect.jpg http://www.scientificamerican.com/media/inline/from-bad-to-worse-with-greenhouse-gas-emissions_1.jpg http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/kids/images/1-1-1-2-pop.jpg http://www.huffingtonpost.com/theblog/archive/wpolar09.jpg http://www.buzzle.com/img/articleImages/559553-49624-51.jpg http://images6.fanpop.com/image/photos/33000000/Global-Warming-global-warming-prevention-33088666-800-625.jpg http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/02340/BXCWK6_2340011b.jpg 23. http://scienceofdoom.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/earthfromspace1.png http://sciencewithme.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/fossilfuels_main3.jpg http://insideclimatenews.org/sites/default/files/imagecache/home_page_slideshow/fertilizer_runoff.jpg http://www.odi.org.uk/sites/odi.org.uk/files/styles/gstyle_632x396/public/widget-images/533394.jpg http://bloomtrigger.com/Content/PagesImages/climate-change-frame-1000px.png http://blogs.thenews.com.pk/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/climate-change.jpg 24. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKJ1XSKSqf4&list=PL2EDF55FEEDDD86E1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4ksgGPURB0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJAbATJCugs http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=VYMjSule0Bw#! 25. Subject: Environmental Science/EcologyTopic: Climate Change: Global WarmingGrade Level: 6-7Number of students: 30Resources Used: PowerPoint Presentation Venn Diagram handout 4 video clips Internet and other references 26. Background: We often hear the terms greenhouse effect, global warming andclimate change. There are times when people used itinterchangeably. In ordertoachievethe learningobjectives, students should be able to understand these terms andhow these terms are related and at the same time different from oneanother. Before presenting the material the teacher has asked thestudents to interview their parents or guardians on how was theweather like when they were kids. She has also asked the studentsto bring some photographs of their parents when they were kids.Photographs should show what weather they have during that time. For example picture on the beach, winter Christmas, rainy day, etc. They have to ask their parents what was the weather on thatparticular picture. When did it happened? Have they noticed anychanges in our weather as compared when they were kids? 27. The class will discuss the pictures theyvebrought. They will also discuss what were theanswers of their parents or guardians. As thestudents share their experiences the teacher willtake down some significant words from theirdiscussion. The teacher will use those words tointroduce the topic. To ensure that everybody is on the right track theteacher will show first the learning objectives. Shewill explain to the class on how these objectivescan be achieved by the class and how can thesebe applied to real life simulations. 28. The first part of the material will discuss globalwarming. What is it? How does it happen? Theteacher will ask the students prior knowledge onglobal warming. What do they know about globalwarming? After getting their answers, the teacher will showthe class a video that describes global warming. Itdiscusses its effects, causes and threats to ourpopulation. Before showing them the clip the teacherprovided them with guidance on what theyshould look for. This is to ensure that they willfocus on the subject of the material. 29. To encourage student participation, the teacherhas incorporated share your thoughts part on thematerial. These sections of the material will showquestions about the subject that was discussed orwill be discussed. The share your thoughtssection aims not just to encourage studentsparticipation but also to check and assess whatthe students have learned from the material. Thiswill also help the teacher identify possiblemisconceptions about the topic. The good thingabout it, is that misconceptions will be addressedimmediately. 30. Some parts of the material have effects. Thisis to incorporate progressive disclosuretechnique within the material. In order to gain better understanding of theinstructional content, the material ispresented in small, easy and manageablechunks of information. The material helps theteacher use instructional scaffolding in herinstruction. It guides the students as theyclimb the ladder towards the achievement oflearning objectives. 31. There are four videos incorporated in the material. As we know there three main reasons why we usevideo in our instruction. First is to introduce atopic, second is provide an additional learningexperience and strengthened the lesson and lastlyto assess students mastery of the material. Thefirst (Global Warming) and third video (ClimateChange) aims to introduce the topic which isglobal warming and climate change. Video # 2(Greenhouse Effect) and Video # 4 (ClimateChange in the Philippines were used to provideadditional learning experience for the studentsand reinforce the subject matter. 32. Although the teacher has her own opinion of thetopic, she made sure that the materials will notshow any biases or will not showcase herpersonal point of view. The materials used servedas references or presentations of the topic and notas evidence of the teachers point of view. Images and videos tend to strain our eyes. Toaddress this concern, the teacher has used someblack background within the material. This is togive students eye some rest. 33. Aside from the share your thoughts section, the material has also someremember sections. These shows the most important information thatthey have to remember and at the same time it clarifies commonmisconceptions about the topic. To sustain students attention and toensure that learning objectives are met group activity was included in thematerial. It asks the students to discuss amongst themselves about thepossible effects of global warming. The teacher has used two non-projected materials for this lesson. First oneis the blackboard and the second one is the Venn Diagram handout. Thehandout was given before the second activity. If theres not enoughtime, the Venn Diagram handout will serve as an assignment however iftheres an available time the teacher can use it as a seatwork for thestudents. If you will notice the handout was used at the latter part of thelesson this is to ensure that students have already developed basicknowledge about the question on the handout. To acknowledge or recognize the different learning styles of herstudents, the teacher has incorporated several medium of instruction in herlesson. Videos for visual and auditory learners. Group activities forkinesthetic learners. Venn Diagram handout for reading and writinglearners.
