5Hong Kong Tennis Association Annual Report 2017
PRESIDENT'S REPORT
This year is proving to be another eventful one in terms of local development, the number of adult and junior tournaments we stage, to Hong Kong representatives coming home w i th encourag ing resu l t s bo th internationally and regionally.
I want to congratulate Kevin Wong and Brian Yeung on capturing a bronze in men's doubles at the World University Games. Not only is it a commendable achievement, winning a medal for Hong Kong on a renowned world arena unquestionably is a powerful impetus towards popularising tennis locally. Aside from garnering positive exposure, achieving a robust growth in the sport's participation rate among the general populace is equally important for us.
Jack Wong and Kevin Wong also brought back a men's doubles bronze from Ashgabat, Tajikistan, where the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games took place. Indeed, medalling at an international multi-sports event is acknowledgement that tennis is making headway and that our players can compete at these levels with the aim of improving further. Overall, we are moving in the right direction.
Junior development remains a key focus for us and I am elated to report that one of our top players, fifteen-year-old Cody Wong, captured her maiden ITF Junior Circuit girls' singles title at the Grade 2 event in Beijing. She is the first player to triumph at this level since Zhang Ling last managed this feat in 2005. Cody is now ranked No. 148 in the world among all girls under the age of 18. However, when considering juniors of her age group only, Cody is the 18th best player in the world according to ITF Junior World Rankings.
We also received news that funding for elite training programmes as an HKSI Tier A Sport is now extended by the Sports Institute for another two years until March 2021. At present, there are five men and four women - Roger Ng, Jack Wong, Kevin Wong, Brian Yeung, Skyler Butts, Zhang Ling, Katherine Ip, Ng Kwan Yau, and Wu Ho Ching - who are full-time tennis players and we certainly welcome this aid to give them the best opportunity to excel in their endeavours.
Mr Herman Hu, SBS, JP has been presented with the Awards For Services to the Game by the International Tennis Federation at the Annual General Meeting in 2017. This award is for persons who have rendered long and outstanding services to the game of tennis. Mr Hu was the Honorary Secretary of the Hong Kong Tennis Association from December 1987 to January 2002 and has been the President of the Hong Kong Veterans’ Tennis Association since 2012. In 2014, Mr Hu was awarded the Honorary Patron of HKTA for his service throughout the years. Mr Hu is only the 5th person from Hong Kong to receive the Awards For Services to the Game, and my congratulations to Mr Hu.
Lastly, I want to thank our CEO, Chris Lai, and his dedicated staff for running successfully as the organiser of a major WTA Tour event such as the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open, and handling the mini-crisis on finals day so adeptly in the face of such unpredictable weather.
Every tennis lover has a role to play, however big or small. You can help us popularise the sport any which way you can, be it coming out to support our players compete or donating an extra racquet to our communities programme. Tennis is a fun game and a fantastic way to stay in shape, yet it can also impact life in so many positive ways. So, get involved, give us your ideas, and follow our news!
PresidentPhilip Mok

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR
Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open 2017: Pavlyuchenkova Beats Gavrilova In Three-Set Cliffhanger
Although Tropical Cyclone Khanun threatened to cause bedlam on finals Sunday, world No. 21 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova outgunned Australian seventh seed Daria Gavrilova in a thriller, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6(3), to lift the trophy. The Russian 6th seed served for match twice in the third set, but the pugnacious Aussie broke back each time to remain afloat. Pavlyuchenkova then fell behind 3-1 in the deciding tiebreak but found a higher gear at the most opportune time to take the next seven points in a row to conclude proceedings.
The top-seeded sister pairing of Chan Yung-Jan and Chan Hao-Ching from Chinese Taipei was all business, as they defeated China's Wang Qiang and Lu Jia-Jing, 6-1, 6-1, to repeat as doubles champion.
Buoyed by a significant increase in prize money to US$500,000, the fourth edition of the Open attracted the likes of Eugenie Bouchard, Elina Svitolina, Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams, Agnieszka Radwanska, Elena Vesnina, Zhang Shuai, Wang Qiang, Samantha Stosur, among other leading players, and young up-and-comers.
Our Tournament Director, Chris Lai, extends his sincere gratitude to the HKTO Steering Committee members, tournament team, security company, venue set-up contractor, in addition to the many volunteers, ballboys, ballgirls, and linesmen for working
together to prep the courts ready for the finals after the incoming typhoon was threatening to wreak havoc to the conclusion of the tournament.
The tournament offered free entry on People's Monday and Students' Tuesday to vigorously promote sports at the community level and to create more opportunities for the underprivileged and less well-resourced to attend major sports events.
More fan-friendly and family-oriented activities were made available with unrestricted access to the Tournament Village, and we also organised several charity & fundraising activities, such as the CAN Challenge and Celebrity Luncheon in collaboration with Friends of Asia Hong Kong, our Official Charity Partner.
The involvement of WTA players with various community oriented activities visiting, preparing, and serving meals to the elderly through Food Angel, as well as attending Kids' Day to engage interaction with local primary schoolchildren, is also a huge boost to local tennis and helps nurture a stronger sporting culture in Hong Kong.

Historic medal for Hong Kong at World University Games
At the Taipei 2017 Summer Universiade, Kevin Wong and Brian Yeung combined for a bronze in men's doubles to cement one of only three sports from Hong Kong to medal at the World University Games. Jack Wong and Kevin Wong teamed up for a bronze in men's doubles at the 5th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games (AIMAG). Hong Kong Wins Promotion To FED Cup Group I
Zhang Ling, Eudice Chong, Katherine Ip, Ng Kwan Yau, and Yu Hiu Tung (Captain) showed excellent team camaraderie all week, which culminated with a 2-1 final win over Uzbekistan to earn Hong Kong promotion to Asia/Oceania Zone Group I next year.

The Asia/Oceania Zone Group I will take place during the week of Feb 5 at the RK Khanna Tennis Stadium in New Delhi on outdoor hardcourts. Eight teams - China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, and Thailand - will be divided into two pools of four. Davis Cup begins 2018 Group II with home tie against Iran
Hong Kong will open its 2018 Davis Cup campaign with an Asia/Oceania Zone Group II home tie against Iran from Feb 3-4 at Victoria Park. Under the new rules, the tie will be played over two days, with the opening singles on Saturday, while the doubles and reverse singles take place on Sunday. The winner of this match-up will then face either Lebanon at home or Chinese Taipei away for a place in the semifinals. Former stalwart, Yu Hiu Tung, a recipient of the Davis Cup Commitment Award from the ITF last year, takes over the captaincy. Historically, Hong Kong has a 3-1 head-to-head record against Iran.
Furthering Coach Education To Self-sustain Localisation
Under the ITF Coach Education Programme, which is to help National Associations create and self-sustain their own system long-term, we organised an Advanced Coach Course for the second time in 13 years in Hong Kong. The objective is to train up more high level local coaches in order to support the increasing demand for elite coaching. After meeting criteria and standards set by the ITF Task Force on Coach Education to receive the bronze recognition this year, we are working towards satisfying the competencies to improve our recognition level to silver in the coming year.

The was an overall rise of 40% in prize money for the women's events and a 5% increase for the men's events at this year's Prudential Hong Kong National Tennis Championships. "The HKTA is aiming to reaching equal prize money status by 2019 with the hope of encouraging tennis as a career in sport, which also compliments the overall development in women's sports Hong Kong," says CEO, Chris Lai. The HKTA is greatly appreciative of the support from the Tourism Commission, Hong Kong Tourism Board, Home Affairs Bureau, Leisure & Cultural Services Department, Major Sports Events Committee, and title sponsor Prudential Hong Kong Limited in making this year's tournament such a success.
The Major Sports Events Committee (MSEC) awarded "M" Mark status to the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open 2017. "M" Mark events showcase Hong Kong's capability to host world-class events, reinforcing its position as the events capital of Asia, while instilling a sustainable sporting culture in the community. Only fourteen sports events met the assessment criteria to hold this distinction.
During the past twelve months, the event's flagship CSR initiative, Let's Serve, was able to bring tennis to some sixty local primary and secondary schools, and reaching in excess of 12,000 students.
The Tournament Village had many different elements that were more family-oriented and fan-interactive to deliver a livelier, fun-filled experience, including performances by tennis trick shot freestylist and live music from several up-and-coming local bands.
RECAPPING THE PRUDENTIAL HONG KONG TENNIS OPEN 2017
On Saturday during tournament week, the "Hong Kong Tennis Open Lee Gardens Street Tennis" was set up at Lee Garden One private driveway at the heart of Causeway Bay. Among the entertaining activities are a mini tennis court for street tennis challenge, photo ops that bring back old Hong Kong, and live broadcasts of the semifinals and finals on big screen. To complete the nostalgia, food vendors Yan Chim Kee, Tak Shing Restaurant, and Mei Lok Store served authentic local snacks, desserts, and drinks from the bygone days.
By securing a healthy number of industry leaders as official partners will continue to help build the event's prestige, brand value, and marketability.

Over the past 12 months, the Executive Committee has overseen the continued strengthening of HKTA’s key partnerships, most notably with HKTA Lead Partner, Prudential Hong Kong Limited. As the title sponsor of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open (PHKTO) since its inauguration in 2014 and as lead partner of the HKTA since 2015, Prudential continues to support HKTA year round as the sponsor of the Hong Kong National Tennis Championships, the Summer, Winter, Mixed and Junior Club Leagues and the grass roots “Tennis Rocks” community programme.
The fourth edition of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open was held from 7-15 October 2017 and the Executive Committee members were heavily involved in Steering Committee meetings, meetings with the Government and regular working meetings with Prudential. This year’s tournament continued the practice of seeking strategic partnerships with industry leaders with the key signings of Sony Hong Kong as the Official Imaging Partner of PHKTO and American Express as the Official Credit Card Partner. The tournament also saw the best field in its 4 year history, as well as record attendance of almost 59,000 over the week and an enhanced Tournament Village that thrilled fans young and old.
In addition, the Executive Committee has overseen the continued strategic partnerships with EFG Bank, which sponsors two local ITF junior tournaments and the Hong Kong junior teams; Nissin Foods, which supports the Hong Kong National Junior Championships, Hong Kong Junior Series and Junior Tennis Novice competition; and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, which funds HKJC Tennis Rocks, amongst others.

Year in ReviewThe Coaches Development Committee's objective is to focus on upholding and improving the overall standard of coaching in Hong Kong. Any effort to bring tennis to young people through a systematic development programme requires accredited coaches at all levels. The training of local coaches to meet standards recognized by the ITF and HKTA thus becomes a priority because they play a key role in carrying out such programmes.
Under the ITF Coach Education Programme, which is to help National Associations create and self-sustain their own system long-term, we organised the second Advanced Coach Course since 2002 in Hong Kong. The goal is to train up more high level local coaches in order to support the increasing demand for elite coaching. After meeting criteria and standards set by the ITF Task Force on Coach Education to receive the bronze recognition this year, we are working towards satisfying the competencies to improve our recognition level to silver in the coming year.
HKTA Coach Licensing Scheme The HKTA Coach Licensing Scheme serves to provide quality benchmarks to assess the overall standard of coaches so as to provide a formal recognition for the coaches, safeguard the interests of the tennis public, and to implement a continuous professional development programme for coaches in Hong Kong. It also provides local coaches with an opportunity to upgrade themselves and develop further skills with a continuous educational system of organised seminars, clinics, forums, and workshops.
The four-level licensing scheme comprises Advanced Level (CL-3), Development Level (CL-2) and Elementary Level (CL-1), as well as Mini Tennis Instructor Level (MT), providing different levels and paths for progression. All coaches employed by the HKTA to coach its training courses must hold valid HKTA licenses.
In 2017, we organized two Elementary Level courses, one Development Level course, and two Mini Tennis Instructor Level courses for those under the Jockey Club Tennis Rocks Programme.

Workshops and SeminarsWorkshops and seminars are vital to the continued education of coaches. These workshops are organised to expand the opportunities through which our coaches can further enhance their knowledge and furnishing them with the proficiency that is required to stay at the forefront of the coaching industry.
CDQC organized the following workshops during the year, with a total attendance figure of 632.
• 18th ITF Asian Coaches Conference in Guangzhou Review
• Singles and Doubles Tactics
• Speed, Agility, and Reaction Time Specific Fitness Training
• Club Development & Developing Performance Players
• Child Protection Training Workshop
• How to Prevent Injury during Hot Summer on Tennis Court
• ITF Workshop – Mr. Suresh Menon
• HKTA Training Guideline
Six technical coaches' workshops and special education needs training were also held, which registered a total attendance figure of 200. Technical workshops conducted regularly under the supervision of the Director of Player Development were aimed at aligning the coaching philosophy of those working under HKTA programmes, while specific instructions with regards to special education needs training were reviewed.
ITF Recognition of Coach Education Systems
ITF recognition is based on criteria and minimum standards for coach education that were agreed by the ITF Task Force on Coach Education involving the Directors of Coach Education from the top ITF member nations. These criteria and standards are subsequently endorsed by the ITF Coaches' Commission and the ITF Board of Directors.
The aim is that the HKTA can create its own coach education programme so that they can become self-sufficient in this area, thereby improving the level of tennis coaching locally.
• To recognize that Hong Kong has its own coach education programme since last decade, we have f inal ly met the requirements for bronze level recognition under the ITF Coach Education System (Self-sufficient up to Level 1)
• Over 80% of our licensed coaches are at Level 1 or below
• Currently, we have six tutors that can conduct coach courses and workshops for the purpose of continued education
• Next step: Silver recognition, which means satisfying the criteria set for self-sufficiency up to Level 2

CSR Committee's MandateThe Committee was formed in late 2016 to formulate and implement HKTA's community and social responsibility initiatives and policies, with a view to developing and expanding HKTA's community engagement. It also oversees the seeking and utilization of donations as well as spearheading fundraising initiatives.
The Committee's overreaching goal is to provide more opportunities for the under-resourced and less privileged to play the game, with an added emphasis on promoting tennis as a fun way to engage in an active, healthy lifestyle for all sectors of the community.
Programmes Supervised by CSR CommitteeThree primary programmes are under the Committee's remit, namely HKTA Tennis Rocks, HKJC Tennis Rocks, and the HKTA and LSSA outreach tennis programmes for children with special educational needs studying at mainstream schools.
HKTA Tennis Rocks
HKTA Tennis Rocks, which was transferred to under CSR Committee's supervision upon its formation last year, has been running since 2014 and offers free tennis training to kids in 5 districts in Hong Kong, reaching Tuen Mun, Kwun Tong, Yau Ma Tei, North District, and Shatin thus far. The programme has received financial support from Prudential and the Wilber Foundation, as well as HKTA internal funding.
The programme targets beginners aged 8 and under, giving them a sense of the basic skills of the game and offering positive values and character building challenges to kids who otherwise may have little or no opportunity to play tennis. Participants are encouraged to join tennis competitions, such as Inter-Primary school tennis and mini tennis competitions, with HKTA subsidizing selected students to do so.
The programme provides other avenues for exposure to tennis outside training, such as meet-and-greets with national players, workshops, attending tournaments, and taking part in clinics with star players.

HKJC Tennis Rocks
HKJC Tennis Rocks was launched in August 2016 as a three-year HK$21 million programme supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to promote tennis to individuals of all ages and social statuses. It consists of four programmes to benefit four targeted social groups: primary school students (Tennis Rocks), students with special educational needs (Special Tennis Rocks), PE teachers (Teach the Teachers Tennis), and retirees & seniors (Senior Tennis Rocks).
This year the primary school programme met its projected target of offering training and free equipment to 690 students across approximately 50 schools in 10 districts, whilst Special Tennis Rocks exceeded its target and brought tennis to 86 students attending special needs schools.
Teach the Teachers Tennis courses were held for around 50 PE teachers in participating primary schools to equip them with the skills to be able to incorporate tennis skills and activities into their schools’ sports curriculums.
Retirees, aged 55 to 68, who enrolled in Senior Tennis Rocks were offered beginner sessions to teach them the basics and help them become acquainted with the game. The aim is that through tennis, they can broaden their social circles, keeping themselves fit and active, and ultimately enhancing their overall quality of life.

HKTA and LSSA Outreach Tennis Programmes
HKTA's outreach tennis programmes, in collaboration with the local NGO Learning Support Service Association (LSSA), have been offering tennis training to children with special educational needs studying at mainstream schools, including those not served under the HKJC Tennis Rocks programme since last year. Funding has been achieved through key fundraising initiatives at the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open (see below).
Key ActivitiesA number of key activities took place over the past 12 months. Ambassador school visits were arranged, including a surprise visit by Eason Chan to one of our primary schools, interacting with the students through coaching and sharing some of his tennis experience with the children. World No.4 Elina Svitolina also made a primary school visit during the week of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open 2017, sharing her skills and enjoying a hit with students.
A special tennis clinic, conducted by former British No. 1 and HSBC Ambassador, Tim Henman, and AELTC Head Coach, Dan Bloxham, was arranged in April, teaching youngsters from the Jockey Club Tennis Rocks Programme the importance of discipline, team work, good behaviour, and the virtues of being a smart and alert listener to coaches and teachers.
An Inter-School Challenge Day was organised with various challenging game stations for students to try and execute the tennis skills they have learnt from their training from Tennis Rocks. Additional exercises involving team work and finding good group dynamics to complete certain tasks were also set up.

An Inter-District Competition was also organized for the Senior Tennis Rocks after they trained for about a year. Fifty-six teams participated in a doubles competition, while others helped out in other aspects of the competition, such as registration and photo taking or as cheerleaders for their own district participants.
Participants in Tennis Rocks and Senior Tennis Rocks got the chance to visit the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open 2017, experiencing some of the fun and games available at the Tournament Village, enjoying several exciting matches as spectators, and meeting a few of the visiting WTA stars. Around 100 kids from the Tennis Rocks programme once again took part in the PHKTO Kids' Day Clinic with several WTA stars.
Fundraising at PHKTOHKTA's primary fundraising platform, which supports the HKTA & LSSA programme, is the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open and this year there were increased fundraising events. The flagship CSR event, the CAN Challenge, was once again held at Victoria Park with 10 teams made up of community leaders, WTA stars and local athletes taking part to knock down as many cans as they could with giant racquets in the allotted time.
This year we introduced a Charity Celebrity Chef Luncheon at The Park Lane Hong Kong, a Pullman Hotel, in conjunction with Friends of Asia Hong Kong, PHKTO’s Official Charity Partner. Funds were also raised through the LOVE Tee campaign online and on site at the booth in the Tournament Village, as well as sales of used match balls.
The total amount raised by these initiatives was approximately HK$220,000, with Friends of Asia Hong Kong providing a dollar-for-dollar matching fund going towards supporting the Hong Kong Adventist Hospital Foundation, Junior Achievement HK, and Splash Foundation.

This year, 100 teams from 34 FCTC member clubs and five HKTA member clubs and residential tennis clubs with a total of 1,500 players taken part. The Two Court League is proving to be a successful initiative that is continuously generating a lot of interest from the local tennis community.
HKTA Convenors' Tournament 2017The annual HKTA Tennis Convenors' Tournament is traditionally jointly hosted by the LMC and Chinese Recreation Club and takes place in the morning of the final day of CRC Open each year. The Convenors' Cup, a perpetual trophy dedicated to the memory of The Tsui Brothers, remains a keenly contested and highly coveted piece of silverware. Stephen Mok of PTC and Clement Lee of LMC won the tournament this year.
Tennis Convenor ForumThe Tennis Convenor Forum is a platform for communication between the HKTA and its affiliated clubs. The forum was held on September 13, 2017 at the Jockey Club Lecture Theatre at Olympic House. Year in ReviewThe MCAC is responsible for the communication with and dissemination of news and information to HKTA members, affiliated and league clubs, sponsors, tennis enthusiasts in the business sector and the wider public. The committee also maintains HKTA's membership and its related services, and procures sponsorship for the HKTA and its events. Individual and club membership remained steady during the year, which generated a stable income for the HKTA.
Corporate Patron League 2017 - Prize PresentationDuring the year, the MCAC held the 25th Dr. Henry Fok Corporate Patron League. With the successful expansion of the Corporate Open to Corporate Open Premier and Corporate Open Championships the past two years, the same format was adopted for CPL 2017 as well. However, in order to expand the CPL to a much wider spectrum of industries across the border, the Open events allowed entry to teams formed or sponsored by companies or organizations in the People's Republic of China this year.
United Italian, DSOBA Premier and Province Group (Catering) Holdings Ltd captured the Best Performance Team Award, a team serving speed competition that was introduced this year.

Year in ReviewThe Officiating Committee ("OC") recognizes the need to improve the standard of officiating at all levels constantly, and to encourage more officials to attend available ITF workshops to upgrade their officiating levels and get further experience by working at international events. HKTA officials worked on a busy tournament schedule of over 60 tournaments and events in 2017, including the fourth Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open, as well as ITF Men's & Women's Circuits, and ITF Junior Circuit tournaments. Several local officials also worked at a number of ITF, ATP, and WTA events overseas during the year.
HKTA National Level Umpire Training CourseThe HKTA also holds the National Level School annually to recruit new officials to cater for the increasing number of tournaments organized every year. Approximately 30 candidates successfully completed the National Level Umpire Training Course conducted at the Kowloon Tsai Park Tennis Centre in May. HKTA will also conduct the course again in December 2017.
A Refresher Course was held on 8 January 2017 at Victoria Park with Korea's Mr. Jemin You as the guest lecturer, who explained the updated rules and regulations, and discussed various changing scenarios to a class of 40 local officials.
A Referee and Chief Umpire Course was held on 28 April 2017 at Victoria Park with China's Mr. Chen Shu as the guest lecturer, who also explained the updated rules and regulations, and discussed important Rules Changes in 2017, matters pertaining to scheduling, how to handle difficult situations during matches, and issues regarding sign-in and arrangement of lucky losers.
The Official Dinner for OC took place at the SCAA Restaurant on 27 April 2017. More than 50 members and officials attended. After conclusion of a lucky draw, particulars concerning the election of the OC's Sub-Committee were explained.
The OC Chairman proposed to re-organize the Sub-Committee in April 2017. The OC Sub-Committee is a channel for officials to provide their input or voice any suggestions and/or comments to the OC. The Sub-Committee will collect all the comments for discussion and review during regular Sub-Committee meetings.
The Officiating Sub-Committee was set up on 22 June 2017. Regular meetings shall take place once every 3 months.
This year, Roy Liu passed ITF Level 2 and was awarded the White Badge Referee certification (Level 2 Officiating School: Bangkok, Thailand, 4 - 8 October 2017)

Year in ReviewIn 2017, our players gave a good account of themselves in overseas competition and managed to return with some very encouraging results. Most notably, Kevin Wong and Brian Yeung captured Hong Kong's historic first medal at the World University Games by claiming a bronze in men's doubles bronze. At the Asian Indoor & Martial Art Games, Kevin Wong and Jack Wong also brought back a bronze medal in men's doubles, while 15-year-old Cody Wong became the first player to win an ITF Grade 2 girls' singles title since 2005, propelling her to a career-high junior world ranking of No. 148.
Such results require not only talent and hard work, but are also years in the making. These players, like so many of their outstanding predecessors, are part of a systematic player development programme that involves talent identification and its subsequent development. Our mission is to ensure tennis has a place in Hong Kong's future by driving participation at the grassroot level, working with those who have the potential to reach the highest levels and, in turn, inspire others to play the game.
Development Model
There are currently nine players - Zhang Ling, Katherine Ip, Ng Kwan Yau, Wu Ho Ching, Jack Wong, Brian Yeung, Kevin Wong, Skyler Butts, and Roger Ng - committed to playing full-time. Intensive training and quality coaching are provided to these players to support their endeavours to reach higher levels of performance.
During the year, Jack Wong reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 800 and was a doubles finalists three times on the ITF pro circuit. Zhang Ling, meanwhile, captured her second career US$25,000 ITF women's circuit title at Tsukuba and claimed another US$15,000 title in Hong Kong. Her 2017 year-end WTA singles ranking of No. 331 is an improvement of 246 places from twelve months ago.
At the time of writing, eight current men hold an ATP Ranking in singles, while five women concluded the season with WTA year-end singles rankings:

The National Training Squad (NTS), consisting of 60-70 players at present, act as a bridge between the feeder squad from below and HKSI Elite at the apex. Our top juniors make up the NTS, a group of 12-16-year-old children that will be representing Hong Kong at the yearly ITF team events and in ITF Junior Ranking Tournaments. These are players that will in the future be competing for Hong Kong in the Davis Cup, Fed Cup, All China Games, and Asian Games. One of the things that we continue to emphasize to all our juniors and team players is the "Squad/Team" concept as we try to instill into the players a sense of unity and personal pride.
Junior Elite, Elite Development (Green/Yellow), Squad Potential, and Youth Athletes Training Scheme are components of the feeder squad, which comprises roughly 700 players.
Talent identification programmes not only play a key role in attracting novices and retaining their participation, but they also ensure that a steady stream of players will continue to feed up the development pyramid. There are currently about 4,000 players within the talent identification base sections.
The Tennis Rocks Programme, for instance, takes a proactive approach by offering free introductory tennis and coaching lessons to primary and secondary school students and teachers. It also acts as a useful platform to drive participation by encouraging schools to include tennis as part of their school's regular PE curricular.
The Mini Tennis Promotion Scheme, which includes Primary School Promotion, Regional Training, and Regional Competitions, continue to be a popular avenue for novices to begin tennis. Youngsters may also acquaint themselves with the game outside of school sports with the Hong Kong Tennis Stars of the Future Programme, which welcomes back Daikin as the title sponsor for the first time since 2002.

The committee's goal is to improve and expand the Player Development Programme by putting more tennis into youngsters and more tennis into those who are willing to commit to the sport. This lays the necessary groundwork to prepare players to compete for Hong Kong not only at the junior level, but eventually in Davis Cup, Fed Cup, and other national team events. Our players must be able to compete at the highest levels of professional tennis to make Hong Kong a perennial contender in major games and competitions in Asia and beyond.

Year in ReviewCompetition is central to our sport and Tournament Committee is committed to providing more competitive opportunities for players at all levels and ages. In 2017, a new ITF Junior Grade 5 event held in August was added to the three existing ITF Junior Circuit Events in Hong Kong. Hong Kong also hosted a total of ten ITF Pro Circuit tournaments for men and women, and a two-week ATF 14 & Under Circuit competition. The Hong Kong qualifying event of Road to Wimbledon, a 14 & under competition, was held in Hong Kong during April for the first time. The finalists in both the boys and girls event compete with representatives from the United Kingdom, China and India in August at the prestigious venue of the Wimbledon Championships, The All England Lawn Tennis Club.
Participation in local tournaments remained strong with 982 entries for the Prudential Hong Kong National Tennis Championships, while the Junior Series and Junior Novice Competitions totalled a combined 2,800 entries. To provide more match-play experience for under-12 players, HKTA organised a Community Junior Tennis Competition comprising four legs of competitions, with each leg consisting of separate draws for Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories.
Tournament Planner®, a licensed software, is now incorporated in use to enable local officials to make updated live results online during the tournament period.
ITF Pro Circuit EventsFrom June 19 to July 9, Hong Kong hosted three US$15,000 ITF Men's Futures events at Victoria Park Tennis Stadium. The three tournaments offered local players an opportunity to play against touring professionals from overseas and a chance to earn valuable ranking points. In Week 1, Jack Wong made it to the F1 quarterfinals in singles and Brian Yeung reached the semis in doubles (w/ He Yecong). The best performer in Week 2 was Kevin Wong, who advanced to the F2 semifinals in singles and doubles (w/ Jackie Tang). In the third week, Jack Wong and Brian Yeung reached the F3 doubles final before falling to Japanese top seeds, Shintaro Imai and Takuto Niki.
In July, Zhang Ling won the singles title at the US$15,000 ITF Women's Circuit event at Victoria Park. At the time, it was her 13th career ITF Pro Circuit women's singles title. The Eudice Chong/Katherine Ip and Zhang Ling/Ng Kwan Yau combinations also reached the semifinals in the doubles.

Nissin Cup Noodles Hong Kong Junior Tennis Series 2017Nissin Foods Co., Ltd, one of the major sponsors of Kei Nishikori, financially supported the Hong Kong Junior Series for the third year running. The Series consisted of five competitions and the aim is to promote tennis at the junior level between the ages of 11 and 18. Events included Boys' & Girls' 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U singles and Boys' & Girls' 12U, 14U, 16U, 18U doubles. There were over 1700 entries in total and the competitions were held at different public tennis courts, such as Hong Kong Tennis Centre, Lai Chi Kok Park, and Chai Wan Park. During the summer, Comp 4 was played at the Hong Kong Country Club, Chinese Recreation Club and Club de Recreio, which provided a great opportunity to help promote junior tennis to member clubs.
Nissin Demae Iccho Hong Kong Junior Novice Competition 2017Nissin Foods Co., Ltd is also the title sponsor of the Hong Kong Junior Novice Competition for the third straight year. The event comprised five competitions and a Grand Masters for juniors aged between 8 to 10. It provided an invaluable platform for youngsters who have progressed past the mini tennis stage to gain more match-play experience. Events on offer include boys' & girls' singles in 8U, 9U & 10U. To promote the ITF's Tennis 10s, the competition used green balls for 10U and orange balls with smaller sized tennis courts for 8U & 9U. Top finishers of each competition are invited to the Grand Masters. Competitions were held in different public tennis courts across Hong Kong. Players exiting in the first and second rounds in each event in the competition were given the opportunity to play in the consolation event. This year, there were over 1000 entries across the competitions.
Hong Kong District Tennis Circuit 2017The Hong Kong District Tennis Circuit is one of the HKTA's local circuits for adult players. The tournament has seven competitions throughout the year and matches were played at different venues including the Hong Kong Tennis Centre, Tung Chau Street Park, Chai Wan Park, Shek Kip Mei Park, Tai Po Sports Grounds, Lai Chi Kok Park, King's Park Recreation Ground, Morse Park, and Yuen Wo Playground from April to November. Community Junior Tennis Competition 2017The community tennis events for Boys' and Girls' 12U, this event is a bridge between the Junior Series and Junior Novice competitions. It is an integral and popular part of the tournament scene in Hong Kong and each year tennis events are organised in all the different districts to enable players of all standards to compete. The Federation of Community Tennis Clubs and Lions Clubs International District 303 Hong Kong & Macau supported the competition 2016 - Grand Master and the competition concluded on 16 Apr 2017. For the competitions in 2017, over 500 entries participated in four competitions divided into Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and New Territories draws.
HKTA Mini Tennis Competition 2017HKTA Mini tennis competition is a starting point for players aged 6U. A total of four competitions were held this year at Hong Kong Park Sports Centre, Tai Kok Tsui Sports Centre, and Wai Tsuen Sports Centre. The number of entries of Comp 1 to 3 exceeded 400 and Comp 4 will be held in December 2017.
Ranking SystemThe Tournament Committee revamped the EFG Junior Rankings earlier this year. The new system will count the best 6 results of a player over the previous 12 months on a rolling basis, which is largely in line with the ITF Junior World Ranking's methodology. A ratio of 1:35 will be in use when converting ITF Junior Ranking points to local ranking points. An updated round by round ranking points distribution for local and ATF tournaments can be found in the document entitled Junior Ranking System 2017 - How It Works, which is downloadable from www.tennishk.org.
The local men's and women's rankings released following the conclusion of the Prudential Hong Kong National Tennis Championships 2017 earlier this year included computation changes that better align with the current structure the International Tennis Federation (ITF) uses.
A player's best 6 results overall from local and international tournaments will now account for that individual's ranking.
In addition, a ratio of 1:1600 will be in use when converting computer ranking points (i.e. ATP or WTA) to local ranking points. Players who reach the final or penultimate rounds in the qualifying of $15,000 and $25,000 ITF Pro Circuit events, for instance, also earn local ranking points (See table below):
