F. Evidence that the college has maintained its primary mission and responsibility requirements as outlined in section 1007.33(2)-(3), F.S.

Miami Dade College has maintained its primary mission and responsibility requirements as outlined in 1007.33 (2) and (3) FS as follows:

Miami Dade College, a member of the Florida College System (FCS) governed by a seven-member District Board of Trustees and a College President, is locally based, serving Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties (Region 23). o MDC is responsive to local educational needs and maintains its primary mission by offering high

quality, affordable education and training opportunities through the Associate in Arts degree (university transfer program), Associate in Science and Associate in Applied Science degrees, Advanced Technical Certificates, College Credit Certificates, Career Technical Education Certificates, baccalaureate degrees, and Continuing Education (non-credit instruction) on eight campuses and several outreach centers in Miami-Dade County, FL.

o Fall 2011 enrollment data (96.38% of MDC students enrolled in AA, AS, AAS, CCC, CTE, and Non-degree programs) confirm that MDC meets its responsibility for awarding associate level and career programs and responds to community needs for postsecondary academic and career education as prescribed in 1004.65(5) FS. According to CCWeek’s TOP 100 Associate Degree Producers 2012, within a two year period (2009-2011) Miami Dade College School of Nursing graduated 1,181 pre-licensure ASN students, which is more than any other School of Nursing in the United States (excluding predominantly on-line institutions).

As stated in the MDC 2012-2014 College Catalog, Pg. 6, MDC maintains an open-door admission policy for associate-level degree programs and workforce education programs. The College welcomes all students regardless of gender, race, color, marital status, age, religion, national origin, disability, veteran’s status, sexual orientation, or genetic information.

MDC provides outreach to underserved populations through initiatives such as the “Feria para Apprender”, an event designed to provide Spanish-only speaking parents with information to assist with student academic success and to create a long-lasting college-going culture, as well as develop a bilingually educated workforce that provides the region with a global competitive advantage. o MDC has one of the most diverse student populations in the country and Fall 2011 enrollment

data indicate: 71% of MDC students are Hispanic 67% are low income, with 46% below the poverty level 58% are female 50% Native language is not English

To meet the need for college preparation, MDC provides remedial education for: o 71% academically underprepared students

17% in all three areas 16% who need EAP Source as of February 28, 2012: Fall Profile 2011, Enrolled Student Survey 2010

MDC complies with all provisions of the Statewide Articulation Agreement which relate to 2-year and 4-year public degree-granting institutions as adopted by the State Board of Education pursuant to 1007.23 FS by ensuring that associate level programs are designed to articulate into upper division baccalaureate programs and meet requirements as stipulated in the State-wide Common Prerequisite Manual and Statewide Articulation Agreements.

MDC does not award graduate credit and does not participate in intercollegiate athletics beyond the 2-year level.

MDC offers the Associate in Arts and over 120 Associate in Science, and Associate of Applied Science degrees and no MDC Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree programs have been terminated as a result of authorized baccalaureate degree programs being offered. MDC is in compliance with the Legislative intent that the primary responsibility of a Florida College System institution is the provision that institutions will offer associate degrees that provide access to a university. As evidenced by 2010-2011 graduation data, 81.96% (n=8335) of MDC students completed AA degree programs.

G. A brief summary of successes and/or unique features of each baccalaureate program, including

program completions, placements, and surveys of graduates and employers.

MDC SOE baccalaureate graduates were recognized for outperforming graduates from state universities in their first year of teaching as measured by students’ FCAT scores. Additionally, using the same FCAT measure, MDC SOE baccalaureate graduates outperformed graduates from most private Florida colleges and universities.

SOE student Stephen Hunt took second place in the Speech competition at the Statewide Florida Future Educators of America Competition.

BSN

BS - Nursing program was fully accredited by NLNAC with no recommendations. Partnership with Baptist Hospital systems were developed, offering on-site classes at two

Baptist hospitals. Increased full-time faculty members from 1 FTE to 8 FTE for the BSN program.

BAS-SM

The BAS-SM program expanded to three new campuses for a total of six campuses during the 2011-2012 academic year. The Capstone Project is an intensive, active learning initiative which requires a substantial final written product and a presentation that is evaluated by a group of judges from our local business industry. A critical component of the project presentation, which differentiates it from most traditional School of Business courses, is the significant individualized feedback provided by our industry leaders to the students making the presentations. The Internship Program is a hands-on opportunity to apply the managerial and supervisory skills students have learned in their coursework.

BS-EET

BS-EET classes are built around our electronics laboratory equipment and desktop computers. Courses use diagnostic, simulation, and/or learning industry standard hardware and software platforms, such as VMWare, National Instruments Design Suite, Mathworks MATLAB, Visual Studio, Xilinx FPGAs, ATMEL AVR Studio, etc., for student learning.

BAS-FT&DP

The BAS-FT&DP program graduated its first class in May 2012 (2011-2). Students in the program are trained using state-of-the-art facilities and equipment that emulate “real-world” experiences. Miami Dade College is one of only a handful of colleges in the nation that operates its own broadcast television network (MDC-TV) where the studio production crew is made up of students who produce broadcast-quality programming. This enables them to gain hands-on experience and build their professional reel (portfolio) for greater career access. Capstone Projects provide our students with an intensive applied learning/hands-on experience in industry standard motion picture and television production. Each student proposed (pitched) their project idea before an entertainment industry panel before they were given the “green light” to go into production. The production team had to go through all phases of media production including budgeting, scheduling, casting, editing, and final screening of their project. This “real-world” educational process prepares students for professional industry standards and practices. Unique features of the BAS program include: The program offers professional internship opportunities such as MDC-TV (College Broadcast Television Network) in addition to opportunities with local and visiting production companies and post-production houses such as Charlie’s Angels, Rock of Ages, Magic City, Burn Notice, NBC6, Plum TV, GOL TV, etc., where students gain hands-on experience while completing their course of study. Recently, five (5) students were hired as production interns for the national television series “Charlie’s Angels” and although the series was short-lived, the students gained valuable experience that will stay with them throughout their career. It is reported by South Florida Workforce 23 that despite the economic downturn, the entertainment industry is growing at a steady rate of 2.5% each year with a plethora of employment opportunities becoming available.

The program also offers students the opportunity to participate in: In the Limelight television tapings with guest artists Kodak Cinematography Master Class MDC Student Film Society membership and activities Miami International Film Festival (MIFF) MIFF REEL Education Seminar Series SEDT Speaker Series Student production showcases; Cinema al Fresco, Student Film Showcase, etc.

BAS-HS-PAS

Job placement is 100% and not an issue for the BAS in Physician Assistant Studies due to the fact that our students are working practitioners with their Associate of Science degree. Obtaining their baccalaureate assists them with advancement or moving to other parts of the country.

SOE Graduating Student Survey of MDC Satisfaction – Thirty-eight alumni out of 270, or 14%, responded to an Alumni Survey concerning their satisfaction with MDC. Because of the small size of the response rate, results should be used with caution. Alumni Survey:

71% (n=27) indicated that MDC was the 1st choice of colleges. Reason for choosing MDC:

o Cost – 89% (n=34) o Location – 71% (n=27) o Flexible Schedule – 58% (n=22)

81% (n=31) indicated that the curriculum was “Very Relevant” or “Relevant”. 91% (n=34 of 37 respondents) indicated that the overall quality of instruction was

“Excellent” or “Good”. 89% (n=34) indicated that they would “Recommend MDC”.

BS in Education Preparedness Self-Ratings:

38 alumni responded to questions regarding their preparedness for teaching. Out of the 18 measures, respondents rated themselves “well prepared” on all measures.

BAS-PSM

The BAS in Public Safety Management survey indicated that 92% of students were satisfied or very satisfied with the program. Alumni Survey:

Reason for choosing MDC: o Cost – 88% o Location – 68% o Flexible Schedule – 68%

88% indicated they were working on an advanced degree or anticipated enrolling at a future date.

76% rated both the overall quality of instruction and the overall educational experience as "excellent" or "good".

80% would recommend MDC to a friend or relative.

BAS-SM

Student Feedback: Students developed and launched their own businesses upon completion of the

Capstone Project (MAN 4900). Businesses include a non-profit mobile eye care center; a utility tool box lock; an accessory line; an online company that sells eco-friendly cases for the iPhone, iTouch and iPad (the company has sold hundreds of units); and an innovative device that detects issues with plumbing leaks.

Internships and other relationships were developed and resulted in new opportunities

for the employment of graduates, including relationships with local Target stores, Sam’s Clubs, and Big Lots.

The internship experience is invaluable to many students. One student shared that the

experience radically changed her priorities for employment and career succession from the banking industry to the nonprofit sector after interning with the IRS in Washington, DC. In the student’s own words, “Coming to Washington literally changed my life, shook to the core the way I interact with others, developed my appreciation for civic and political issues affecting my community and country, and made me a well-informed citizen able and willing to make a difference in public life at various levels.”
