ANNUAL CAMPAIGNS THAT

BUILD COMMUNITY!

Page 2: ANNUAL CAMPAIGNS THAT BUILD COMMUNITY!...•Give Nothing (10-20% of the congregation) They all have reasons for not giving. When asked, about half will reply, "Nobody ever asked me.“

Who do you give to?

Why?

Giving & Community People have such a need for friendship and for community that fund-raising has to be community-building. I wonder how many churches and charitable organizations realize that community is one of the greatest gifts they have to offer. If we ask for money, it means we offer a new way of belonging. - Henri J. M. Nouwen

• Give Nothing (10-20% of the congregation) They all have reasons for not

giving. When asked, about half will reply, "Nobody ever asked me.“

• When They Attend: (15-25% of the congregation) These people give the $5,

$10 and $20 bill in the offering plate. Essentially, those who give when they

attend are paying for entertainment: music, sermon, liturgy, program, etc.

• Dues Payers: (15-30% of the membership) Pledges tend to be in the range of

$150 to $600 per year

• Fair Share Givers: (15-20% of the membership) Fair share gifts will range

from $600 - $1,500 per year. They seldom give more than $100-150 per month.

• Percentage Givers and Tithers – Giving is becoming a spiritual practice

irrespective of needs of the church. See themselves as "partners with Christ" in

the mission of the Church.

• Joyful Givers give as "family." These two groups make up 9-12% of the

Episcopal Church 65 - 75% of the Church's income. In looking for ways to give,

the Joyful Giver feels like a grandparent wanting to give gifts to grandchildren.

Why do people give? 1. Someone I know asked me to give, and I wanted to help them (peer-to-peer) 2. Felt emotionally moved by someone’s story (testimonials) 3. Want to feel I’m not powerless in the face of need and can help 4. Want to feel I’m changing someone’s life (stories of impact) 5. Feel a sense of closeness to a community or group (small group community) 6. Want to memorialize someone (Legacy Society) 7. Was raised to give to charity—it’s tradition in my family 8. Want to be “hip,” and supporting this charity (i.e., wearing a yellow wristband) 9. It makes me feel connected to other people and builds my social network (sermon?) 10.Want to have a good image of myself/my company 11.Want to leave a legacy that perpetuates me, my ideas or my cause 12.Feel fortunate and want to give something back to others 13.Give for religious reasons—my faith teaches me to help others (teaching/preaching

giving as a spiritual practice) 14.Want to be seen as a leader/role model (parents/family participation?) (Network for Good, 2015)

Why people don’t give generously

1. Don’t feel personally involved, engaged

– little sense of belonging

2. Not inspired by the mission/vision

3. No confidence in leadership

4. No connection between giving and faith 5. Experiencing financial hardship
