Rockhound Tour of England Article by Jane Broome

Photography by Joe Broome This is the first of a two part series on the recent tour of England by Bob Jones. A special thanks to the Broome’s for sharing their trip with us.

We took the Rockhound Tour of England from May, 4 – 14. Our reasons were many including the fact that our great grand parents emigrated from Great Britain (during the American Revolution); also we wanted to learn more about the rocks and minerals; plus, Joe had one-half million frequent flier miles with Delta (which made our tickets free). My first trip overseas and it was amazing.

This trip was advertised in several rock and mineral

magazines. It was sponsored by Crizmac Art and Cultural Center of Tucson, Arizona in collaboration with Rock & Gem magazine with Bob Jones, senior editor, as our tour guide. Bob and his wife Carole visited England in 2009 and set up this tour at that time. He also has roots in England and Wales and wanted to try to climb his family tree. Because of his vast connections in the rock and mineral world, he opened doors for us that otherwise might not be possible.

This was a bus tour and included 29 people, four

were non-rockhounds, we two were beginners, amateurs, collectors, university and high school teachers, engineers (mining, chemical, electrical), and several officers of their

respective state and local mineral societies including Izzie and Bill Burns who had responsibility of chairing the American Federation – California Federation show in California. There were several people whose interests Included jewelry making, lapidary work, eggs, spheres, geodes, and fossils. Bob Jones was 84 in September, and Bill and Izzie Burns are near the same age also. They had enough energy for all of us combined!

Tour Group at Caerhays Estate The two of us know very little about rocks and

minerals, but we are trying to learn. Anita Westlake’s course is wonderful. She is teaching as though we were in rock/mineral Kindergarten and this is exactly where we are and what we need. We are reading and studying several books also. Our particular interests lie in field trips and in interesting young people in the world of mineralogy and geology.

Specimen from inside the vault at the BNH Museum Our trip included behind the scenes tours of the

National History Museum, London (Kensington), led by chief curator of mineralogy, Alan Hurt. He took us into the vault and from there up back winding staircases into the storage facilities, both of which are never opened to the public. We were shown specimens from Sir Arthur Rus-sell’s collection, plus other specimens that are too light sen-sitive to be on permanent display. We closed out the day touring the Tower of London where the Crown Jewels are on display – those crown jewels are magnificent, but that gigantic ruby is a spinel.

The Royal Cornwall Museum The Royal Cornwall Museum tour was led by cura-

tor Sara Chambers, whose primary field is geology. This museum houses the large collection (3000 specimens) of Philip Rashleigh, which is important for its cassiterite (tin) history. Note: The British Museum came and chose 90 of these specimens for their collections. In the private cham-bers of the Royal Cornwall Museum’s library were all of Rashleigh’s private papers (gloves on) which are being documented and preserved. His notes are impressive for his thoroughness. The head librarian there is Angela Broome who kiddingly called Joe “cousin”.

Specimen from the Royal Cornwall Museum This collection is being catalogued by Courtenay

Smale, a geologist who graduated from the Cornwall School of Mines. He also led us through the Geevor Tin Mine and Museum, the Museum of Hard Rock Mining and the King Edward Mining Complex, which is now used by the Cornwall School of Mines to train mining engineers. We literally crawled through the Geevor Tin Mine which is com-pletely preserved. We found some good specimens there and learned the differences between the natural granite and the rock-bearing cassiterite which, at first glance, looks almost the same.

Page 6 Tips and Trips

Courtenay Smale is also cataloguing the previously

unknown, but substantial mineral collection of the Williams family of CAERHAYS ESTATE (1370 – present), Cornwall. This collection was recently found in old boxes in the basement (or “underkeep”) and is an important contribution to the mineral world, not only for its relationship to the tin mining of the area, but for its specimens from around the world, including Russia and Germany. Some of its specimens are now believed to be from the Longfellow mine in Arizona – further testing is to be done. The British Museum chose 28 of these specimens for its collections.

Caerhays Castle

The tour at Caerhays Estate and Gardens ended with a memorable dinner with the owners, the Williams family. We sat at the table to the right of Charles Williams’ mother, who was fascinating and most enjoyable. Charles Williams sells unusual specimens, primarily azaleas and rhododendrons from his vast gardens to the public, for those who may be interested. At the request of the Williams family, no pictures were taken of the inside of the castle since it is their private residence.

Exiting the Geevor Tin Mine Tour

Stayed tuned next month for part 2 as Jane and Joe continue the Rockhound tour of England with visits to Chatsworth Castle, Kynance Cove, Treak Cliffs, Cheddar Gorge, Stonehenge, and the British Museum.

Sunshine Report Everyone please put Bert Ford on your Sunshine list. Bert and his wife Teresa went to the Geode Fest in Keokuk last month. The wall broke free and fell on Bert while they were at one of the commercial locations known as Jacobs. He fractured some of the outer edges of his spine and compressed two vertebrae. Please remember to keep Karen Babulski and your prayers as she continues her stay at the New London Health Center in Snellville. Also remember Pam Martin and Anita Westlake as they continue on their road of recovery. As always let me know when you have any news for the Sunshine. Linda Batcha, Sunshine Chair

We will decide where to eat lunch after the Pick-Up. Directions: Take 75 north to 575 north. Go 35 miles to exit 27 (Bus 5)-the Howell Bridge Rd./Ballground exit. The Georgia Mineral Society Sunday, October 10th, 2010 Patty Construction Quarry Summerville Lace Agate Chattooga County, GA

10:00 AM EST MEET: At the site, on US 27 in Chattooga Co. Ga. This is in the NW corner of the state of Georgia. Directions: From I-75 exit at #306 and take GA. 140 West toward Adairsville. Turn rt. on to US 27. The Quarry will be on the left between the county owned waste dumpsters and the US Forestry office. This is approximately 3.0 miles beyond the intersection of Gore Subligna Rd. and about 2.2 miles South of Summerville. Allow about 2 hours for this approximately 90 mile trip from Atlanta. Tools: Eye protection is a must for anyone wishing to break apart material with a rock hammer, or sledge. Chisels would be valuable, as would small ground shovels and rakes. A small cart or hand truck may be useful for hauling larger pieces of take home material. Much of the material is covered with a chalky white chert, and a pale of water is sometimes handy for dipping and identifying the better material. Bring: plenty of fluids. This is a good site for children. Any pets MUST be on a leash at all times.

From the south at the US 460 and US 15 intersection just east of Farmville. Drive north on US 15 for about 18 miles. Go past Willis Mt. Plant Rd. and turn right on Rt. 788, Gieseke Road. (Some of the white crystals fluoresce light blue under a short wave UV lamp.) Quartz, pyrite, white muscovite, green fuchsite and red iron stained muscovite, hematite or goethite coated kyanite with some having a beautiful iridescent coating. The green apatite and trolleite are there but hard to locate. There are several other

minerals such as augelite, energite, topaz, lazulite, variscite and goyazite that rarely occur. Recently we have been finding some small but beautiful rutile crystals in the East Ridge mining area. PLANNED EVENTS: Departing from the assembly area about 9AM, we will convoy several miles to the East Ridge mining area. We will depart from this location about noon and convoy back to the Willis Mountain mining area. You can drive in to all collecting areas. We will provide, for a nominal fee, a lunch of BBQ, chips and a drink. You may also bring your own lunch, especially if you are on a special diet. Bring a lawn chair and rest a spell.
