THE FELICIANA CATHOLIC FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
Catholic Apologetics
Q – Can/should a Catholic receive communion at a Protestant church?
A – No, a Catholic should not receive communion in a Protestant church.
In recent years, we have seen an increase in the number of Catholics who have been receiving communion at Protestant church services. Their arguments for doing so range from a “spirit of ecumenism” down to a belief that the communion services of all religions are equal. This exchange of communion is called "inter-communion." "Inter-communion" means that the believer of one faith (religion) receives communion in another faith (religion) while attending their service.
What does the Catholic Church say about “inter-communion?” Can a Roman Catholic believer receive communion while attending the service of another faith (religion)? With the exception of believers who belong to Rites that are in communion with the Roman Catholic Church, "under no circumstances" is it allowed for a Ro-man Catholic to receive communion from ministers who are not of the Roman Catholic faith. This is in accordance with Church Canon Law # 844.1, which states:
"Catholic ministers may lawfully administer the sacraments only to Catholic members of Christ's faithful, who equally may lawfully receive them only from Catholic ministers." [Canon # 844.1]
Why does the Roman Catholic Church have this law in place? When a Roman Catholic believer receives the Sac-rament of Holy Eucharist (communion), he is making a statement that he is “in full communion” (“ in full commun-ion” means “in full agreement, without exception, with all the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.”) with those who are present and who are also partaking in the Sacra-ment of Holy Eucharist. One cannot be in full communion with more than one church.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 1400, states, “Ecclesial communities derived from the Refor-mation and separated from the Catholic Church, ‘have not preserved the proper reality of the Eucharistic mystery in its fullness, especially because of the absence of the sacrament of Holy Orders.’ It is for this reason that, for the Catholic Church, Eucharistic intercommunion with these communi-ties is not possible”. Furthermore, while Roman Catholics believe in the continued Divine Presence of Jesus (i.e., the “Real Presence”) in the Holy Eucharist after the celebration of the Holy Mass, other faiths do not share in this belief. Some of our separated brothers and sisters believe that the consecration of the bread and wine is either symbolic or in memory of the Last Supper, rejecting the firm belief that Roman Catholics affirm, which is that the bread and wine are actually transformed into and remain the Body and Blood of Christ until consumed.

Congratulations! We wish to congratulate Robert
Hunter Fudge upon reaching the
rank of Eagle Scout! The Eagle
Scout Court of Honor for Robert
was held April 10 at St Francisville
United Methodist Church. Robert
is the son of parishioners, Neal &
Sarah Fudge.
Again, when you accept communion you are saying I be-lieve (that’s what the Amen! is, after all) to all that that par-ticular body is teaching – that’s what communion is. Cath-olics do not believe what these other ecclesial bodies be-lieve about Holy Communion and should not receive com-munion there, no matter what the well-meaning members may say to encourage Catholic participation in their com-munion services.
When a Catholic receives communion in another ecclesial setting, it causes scandal. As much as we wish for Christian unity, we do not yet have it and making it appear that we do sends a signal to those with weak faith or uninformed faith that it doesn’t matter where one worships.
The Eucharist is the source, summit and focus of our life in Christ; it communicates Christ to us and is a real and pow-erful means of grace. It should not be confused with the communion services of other traditions. We are called as Catholics to witness to our faith. That means living visibly as Catholics, showing the world the grace that flows through Christ’s Church. Among those graces is the privi-lege of receiving Jesus Christ, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, at Mass; Jesus giving Himself to us completely without reserve in the Eucharist.
Neighborliness is indeed a virtue, and it’s good to want to find common ground with our separated brethren. Even so, some things cannot be compromised for the sake of social interaction and this is one of them.

The Parish Vocations Committee is conducting the ‘Traveling Chalice’
Program during this Easter season. Participants/parishioners are asked to set aside time each day to pray for religious vocations during the week that they have the chalice. A prayer book is included for your use. If you
would like to participate in or for more information, please either complete one of the forms that can be found in the back of each church or contact Glenn Phil-lips at 635-2056 (email [email protected]) or Martin Macdiarmid at 634-5898 (email [email protected]).
The Parish Vocations Committee would like to invite all parishioners to join us at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in praying the Rosary for vocations to the priesthood and religious life at 10am every "irst Sunday of the month. Also, the Rosary is prayed before Mass every week at Our Lady of Perpetual Help.
