Volunteers Make Tallahassee Symphony Society

Tallahassee Symphony Society President Dr. Bobbie Frye‐MacDonald hosted a luncheon to express her appreciation for her Executive Committee and the Society volunteers who helped raise $18,000 for the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra during the 2014‐2015 season. She concluded the luncheon by presenting each of her guests with a yellow or pink rose and the Donna O’Meara Volunteer of the Year Award to Donna Heald.

The Tallahassee Symphony Society created the Donna O’Meara Volunteer of the Year Award to recognize the individual who most exhibits the spirit of volunteerism. Donna Heald is at every TSS event ‐‐ welcoming guests at our Lunch with Darko series, performing her duties as a member of our Executive Committee serving as Secretary, managing TSS affairs for our President. Everybody knows Donna, as she is always there.

Volunteers are what make TSS so successful. The Tallahassee Symphony Society (TSS) raises funds for the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra (TSO).

Fundraising activities include its primary fundraiser ‐‐ the Holiday Tour of Homes the first weekend of December. Under the expert guidance of Dr. Fancy Funk, over 250 volunteers donated thousands of hours for the 2014 Tour, which raised the majority of the funds donated to the Orchestra.

Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra patrons and musicians, members of TSS, singers and musicians from our colleges, businesses, and the residents of our community and neighboring communities including Georgia, volunteers are key to the success of our Orchestra. We need TSS member support, and we greatly appreciate all you have done this past year. When the term ends for a TSS President, they remain serving on the 

Executive Committee as Immediate Past President. Going above and beyond the call of duty, Mary Cordero volunteered to Chair the Holiday Tour of Homes fundraiser for 2015. This is no surprise, as Mary is a former Volunteer of the Year, too. Hundreds of 

volunteers are needed for the Tour. Be sure and sign up to help Mary with this grand primary fundraising event for our symphony.

The artistic talents of Haiqiong Deng, Director of the Chinese Music Ensemble at FSU, Qibo Zhang and Fenglan Yu, and two of her students graced the Tallahassee Symphony Society during a Society Soirée, at the recently reopened Masa Restaurant, at its new location across from Lake Ella. The two student musicians included Wenxing Song from Rickards High School and Zhuomei Tong from Chiles High School.

Haiqiong Deng and Company Mesmerize the Tallahassee Symphony Society

Guests were delighted by their mesmerizing program, part of which included “River Frolic in the Wintery Water”; an exceptional piece named “Fighting the Typhoon”, which reflects advanced techniques and a change in Chinese music style due to conflict in China; and “Crescent Moon At Dawn”, which is based on a popular folk song from Manchuria. The traditional Chinese music filled the room as the Zheng and the Banhu instruments were played.

The Zheng is an ancient Chinese instrument that consists of many strings and bridges stretched across a thin, flat piece of wood. The Banhu is another Chinese traditional bowed string musical instrument. It looks like a two‐string fiddle.

As the set was being changed out, Haiqiong, Qibo, and Fenglan broke into a gorgeous Chinese song. Suddenly, it sounded as though we were at the New York Met. Their voices are operatic – a reason to have them return or to seek them out in Tallahassee!

In addition to a fine lineup of Asian appetizers, TSS member Betty Jensen introduced the guests to young ladies dressed in their native attire: China, South Korea, and Japan. Two demonstrated the art of Origami for guests. They gave each guest beautiful gifts brought from Japan by the Soirée Chair, Dr. Betty Jensen. Several guests took home door prizes from both China and Japan.

Soirées for the Tallahassee Symphony Society enable the Society to increase its contributions to the support of our wonderful Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. They bring a whole new vision of our world to anyone who dares to enter our world of exquisite music and culture. You never want to miss a Soirée.

Our Annual TSS Tour of Homes for 2015

In April, we started organizing our biggest fundraiser. Mark your calendar now for The Holiday Party and Silent Auction, which will be held on Thursday, December 3rd. The 23rd Annual Tour of Homes will be held on Friday, December 4th, and Saturday, December 5th. The theme for this year’s tour is CELEBRATING THE SEASON. All homes will be decorated for the holidays. Each home will feature music performed by local musicians.

We have four beautiful homes for you to tour. Interior Designer, Clay Sechrest, named the first home the “White House” with its all white bricks, from similarity to the Washington, DC home of the US President. 

The “Great Room” opens to a gorgeous patio, all recently designed. Many beautiful paintings, artwork, and furniture grace this 6000 square foot home. The man of the house enjoys spending time in the kitchen, cooking to his heart’s content.

Another home on tour is set on 12.5 acres of land. The house has 10,000 square foot and in addition has  6400 square foot patio area with a gas fire pit and a pergola. 

Accessory buildings include a carriage house, four car garage and a 1800 square foot hydroponics greenhouse.

Under the Bylaws of TSS, an Endowment Fund is established as an interest‐bearing cushion in support of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra (TSO) when needed.  These funds may only come from voluntary contributions and bequests.  The funds may not come from fund‐raising events and direct solicitation.

The Endowment Fund shall accumulate without disbursal until the principal shall reach a sum of $50,000.  Thereafter, any combined principal and interest over the $50,000 may be withdrawn in one year and shall only be paid to the TSO for its legitimate purposes.

TSS Past President, Doris Pollock, and her husband, Arnold H. Pollock, Esq., who, himself, was a big‐time volunteer for TSS founded the Endowment Fund.  

Contributing to our Endowment Fund is an act of generosity and goodness for which we always will be grateful.  One may contribute in honor or memory of a loved one.  Please consider our Endowment Fund when you want to help the TSO in a lasting way.

Silent Auction Planned During the Tour of Homes Kickoff Party 

The Tallahassee Symphony Society will hold a Silent Auction at the Tour of Homes kickoff party on December 3rd, 2015, the night before the tour starts. We need your help!  We are looking for donations for the auction. The Tour of Homes, to be held on December 4th and 5th, 2015, and the Silent Auction are the major fundraisers for the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. 

Would you be able to donate an item or a certificate for a gift or service for inclusion in this Silent Auction? Do you know of individuals or businesses that could make such a donation? 

Donations are tax deductible and would be acknowledged as part of the silent auction information, thus generating some very favorable publicity for each offering.

Fantasia, Bolero, tangos, and visiting guest artists on piano and cello—there’s something 

for everyone during the Tallahassee Symphony Society’s (TSO) 2015‐16 season! 

September 26th is sure to be a “Fantastique Night,” especially with Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique on the program. This “semi‐autobiographical” work portrays the composer’s obsession with a Shakespearean actress, whom he later married (they separated 11 years later).  Berlioz tells of an artist who sees his beloved everywhere; she has her very own musical theme, the “fixed idea,” which appears in all five movements. But he dreams that he has killed her, so he marches to the scaffold.  His last thought is of her—the clarinet plays the idée fixe and then “plink, plink” the strings depict his decapitation followed by rolling timpani (a Dickensian head).   One of the unusual techniques Berlioz used in the finale is col legno, in which string instruments play “with the wood” of the bow. The resultant image of dancing skeletons may have influenced Liszt, whose Totentanz (“Dance of Death”) is also on the program (and contains col legno playing). Virtuoso pianist Andrew Staupe will join the TSO for this set of variations based on a medieval chant, the Dies Irae or “Day of Judgment” from the Requiem Mass. The concert begins with the colorful Night on Bald Mountain, Mussorgsky’s musical representation of a night of revelry by cavorting demons. I’ll bet that you remember this music from Disney’s Fantasia!   Of course the Holiday Magic concerts on December 11 and 12 do not need any introduction.

“Devotion and Dance” is the title of the January 9 concert.  After the opening number, Boccherini’s delightful “La Casa del Diavolo,” another wonderful young pianist, Conrad Tao, will WOW us with Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A Minor.  Schumann’s wife Clara played the solo at the premiere when she was 26 years old.  The two had a rare relationship which started when she was only 16 and he 25; her father, Schumann’s teacher, forbade their romance but they married anyway after years of legal battles.  Tonight’s concert also features my favorite Beethoven Symphony—the Seventh.  It was so popular at its premiere in 1813 that the audience demanded an encore of the second movement.  Richard Wagner coined the term “the apotheosis of the dance” for this work, and I expect Darko to be dancing on the podium!   Tango, anyone?  “Rhapsodic Rendezvous” (March 19) includes two dance sets composed by Argentinian composers, Estancia by Ginastera, and Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by Piazzolla, the Tango King.  The latter’s music is often sensuous and sultry, and with its syncopated rhythms, it is always irresistible.  But you will have to resist the urge to get up and dance, with or without a rose between your teeth!  After the beautifully atmospheric “Nuages” (“Clouds”) from Debussy’s Nocturnes, the March 19 concert concludes with the famously repetitive Bolero.  Thanks to actress Bo Derek and her romantic scenes set to the music of Bolero in the 1979 film 10, record sales of this hypnotic piece generated over $1 million for Ravel’s estate.

2015 ‐2016 Season of Delightful Music

How often have you been able to attend the premiere of a new work?  Imagine being in the audience when Clara premiered hubby Robert Schumann’s new piano concerto.  Or what about being part of the crowd that applauded so enthusiastically for the orchestra to repeat a movement of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony?  On April 30, 2015, you will have the chance to participate in history when TSO premieres a new work by Yale professor Christopher Theofanidis.  As an 

added bonus, the orchestra will play the energetic “Italian” Symphony, written by then 24‐year old Felix Mendelssohn.  The final Saltarello will get your heart racing for sure!  This concert ends the season with Dvorak, always a crowd pleaser.

TSS is grateful to the beautiful photograph, the hard work of Drs. Penny J. Gilmer and Amy Sang. Dr. Gilmer is an avid photographer who has been TSS photographer for over 15 years. She has over 2000 photos in her collections, and most of them labeled with names and details. Dr. Gilmer is a Professor Emerita in Chemistry and Biochemistry at Florida State University and Senior Education Officer with BUC Technologies, where she oversees teaching of environmental conservation at K‐12. Dr. Amy Sang assists Dr. Gilmer as a photographer for TSS. Dr. Sang is also Professor in Chemistry and Biochemistry at Florida State University. Several photographers have also contributed to TSS including Len Adams, Glenn Hosken, and Dotty McPherson.

35th Anniversary Gala: An Evening With Fleming

Our orchestra continues to bring the most outstanding talent to the community including Renée Fleming. She, the most celebrated American soprano of our time, will join the TSO for an evening of beloved arias and songbook classics. A regular at the Metropolitan Opera and host of “Live from Lincoln Center,” Ms. Fleming’s accolades include the National Medal of Arts, four Grammys, and the distinction of being the first classical artist to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl in 2014. Ms. Fleming has sung at the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Concert for HM Queen Elizabeth II. Her concert schedule includes dates in the world’s most famous cities and venues the world over.
