Don’t Let SARCOPENIA Put You In A Nursing Home!
What is sarcopenia? Unabridged dictionaries didn’t even
carry this word until early in the 21st century! Wikipedia
describes it this way, It’s characterized first by a muscle
atrophy (decrease in size of muscle) along with a reduc-
tion in muscle tissue caused by such factors as replace-
ment of muscle fibers with fat, accompanied by changes
in muscle metabolism and degeneration of the neuromus-
cular junctions. Combined, these changes lead to pro-
gressive loss of muscle function –and frailty.
Lack of exercise is currently thought to be a significant
risk factor for sarcopenia. It is believed that at least 60%
of people in long-term care facilities suffer from this de-
bilitating condition. It can make you so weak that you
can’t get out of a chair or perform the basic activities of
daily living-such as bathing or dressing yourself! Not
only muscle, but the entire musculoskeletal system of
muscle, neuromuscular responsiveness, endocrine func-
tion, vasocapillary access, tendon, joint, ligament and
bone depends on regular and lifelong exercise to main-
tain integrity. Exercise and increases in activity have
been shown to be beneficial in settings of sarcopenia
even in the very old. So it’s never too late to begin an
exercise program! Our own Windsor Locks Senior Cen-
ter has an excellent Fitness Center with a very reasonable
fee schedule. There are three treadmills, three exercise
bikes, one elliptical trainer, a good variety of resistance
machines-and a large flat-screen TV to take the curse off
it! For those who prefer a group form of exercise, certi-
fied fitness instructor Dee Abrams is offering a wide va-
riety of alternatives. There is chair yoga, tai chi, water
fitness and exercise classes. At a bare minimum, your
exercise program could be as simple as walking regularly
–on your own, or with a friend—as long as the program
is faithfully carried out. Seems like, when you’re talking
about seniors and muscle power, it all comes down to a
simple warning: “Use it or lose it”!
Best Regards, John

Joe Netolicky 2/16 Muriel Picard 2/28
Dear Readers,
Happy New Year to everyone! May it be a healthy and fun year
for all my friends here at the Senior Center and those in my
thoughts and prayers. When we had that terrible cold spell in
January, I had a very bad cold. I couldn't even get to the Senior
Center, I was so bored being in the house for a week. I decided
to read a “Souvenir Pictorial” book from “Henry Ford Museum
& Greenfield Villages” in Michigan. It had been many years
since Phil and I went there to visit this wonderful place. As I
think back to our visit it made me realize what great men lived
in America back in the 1800’s. Men like Thomas Edison, Henry
Ford, Orville and Wilbur Wright, just to name a few. They had
such great inventive minds, through their errors, trials and tribu-
lations they have brought us to where we are here in America.
In starting this museum Ford wanted to collect at leaset one ex-
ample of everything made in America and he did achieve just
that. Some people called it “Henry Fords Attic” I wonder how
many of my readers have an “Attic” like Henry Fords? Did you
know that Ash Wednesday and Valentines Day are on the
same day this year? I couldn't believe it when I saw it on
TV! Oh well we will just have to go out with our Valen-
tine on Tuesday or have fish on Wednesday . Just as long
as we’re having fun at our “Age of Elegance”. Sweet
hearts to all my friends in Windsor Locks !! Mary Ann
