“It just opens the door.” WLC Learner, Ken Morvee,

shares his story

A few years ago, Ken’s son wrote an essay about

him for a school project. His son wrote about how

Ken was his hero. “I had to have him read it to me.”

Ken shares, “And at that point I wanted to better

myself to read.” Ken called Whatcom Literacy

Council and met with a staff member to discuss his

goals and to assess his reading and writing skills.

A few weeks later, Ken was matched with his tutor,

Sharon Wagner. Together they have worked on all

aspects of Ken’s reading and writing. Through

letters, books, crossword puzzles and other

activities Ken’s literacy skills have improved. He

says he is now able to read notes from his family

around the house, and feels comfortable leaving

notes for others. “It just opens the door.” says Ken

about his new skills.

Ken and Sharon continue to work together weekly.

While Ken admits that he was nervous at first, he is

encouraging to others who want to try working with

a tutor. “There is help out there. You should just do

it. It is kind of scary at first, but once you start doing

it, it’s actually fun.”

Greetings friends of Whatcom Literacy Council,

Each year I struggle with what information to feature in our

annual report. It is hard to distill an entire year down into a

concise report that still shares our story in an engaging

way. In some ways it was even more difficult to choose

our highlights this year because - in my view - 2008 was

one of the most successful and exciting years we have

had since I joined the WLC team 4 years ago!

There are so many good things happening! The energy

and dedication of our staff and volunteers is an inspiring

thing to behold. We all share an enthusiasm for reaching

out to learners in new and innovative ways. Our many

volunteers and

community partners

share in the

passion, and

together we are

making

transformative

things happen in

people’s lives. Our

community grows stronger as learners gain skills and

achieve new goals.

Some of you have heard me speak and will already know

that I consider working at WLC to be my dream job. I

know that the work we do makes a real difference in the

lives of many adults in our community. I feel so fortunate

to work with a team of exceptionally creative and talented

people who are committed to making WLC a stronger and

healthier organization. My thanks to each of you for the

vital part you play in this work. Please take a few minutes

to look over the highlights of last year, and remember – It

was only possible with your help!

Highlights of 2008

WLC Learners Achieved their Goals

150 WLC Learners Met Their Learning Goals in 2008!

36 Learners met their employment-related goals

including getting a better job, gaining new employment

and entering a job training program.

92 Learners met their education-related goals

including entering community college classes, and

improving their basic skills. Three learners earned their GED!

15 learners made gains by achieving a goal relating to community involvement

including two learners who became US citizens!

In 2008, WLC Served 455 learners through: 1-to-1 Tutoring Our core program is free, customized,

1-to-1 tutoring. Tutors attend 10 to 12 hours of training

before becoming active in our program.

Small Group Classes – We currently offer 6 different small group classes

for learners to attend to supplement their 1 on 1 learning or

to begin working on their skills while they wait to be matched.

Volunteers in Classrooms – some of our volunteer tutors are placed into Adult Basic

Education classes or English as a Second Language classes at Whatcom Community

College and Bellingham Technical College. This allows for more individualized

instruction within a classroom setting.

We Developed Programs and Partnerships

to Better Serve Learners

• New small group classes were added at Roosevelt Elementary School, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lynden, and in our new classroom

• We served 455 learners, trained 120 new tutors, and had 253

tutors active in our program. • WLC tutors contributed 5,629 hours of volunteer time.

• We were awarded a $10,000 grant from Boeing to purchase

seven laptops, language learning software, and a projector that will allow us to offer computer skills classes. • We strengthened our partnerships with local libraries, schools, and community organizations

• We held our most successful Bee ever - raising $35,000! • Our Literacy Breakfast also generated the most revenue ever - raising over $24,000! • We enjoyed broad community support from individuals,

organizations, businesses, foundations, and the United Way. • We ended the year ‘in the black’ even though we budgeted to

dip into reserves by $17,000!

We Planned for a Prosperous Future

• WLC staff and board began our strategic planning and visioning process for the future.

• Three talented new board members joined our team to replace three veteran board members leaving due to term limits.
