I am pleased to present the 2010 Manos Unidas Annual Report, which contains a short summary of the activities carried out by ourorganisation over these months.

In 2010, our campaign “Against hunger, defend the Earth” tackled the fight against hunger, our organisation’s hallmark, defendingour home, the Earth, and the sustainability of the environment, mainly taking into account the consequences that climate change hasfor the life of the most vulnerable.

In this age of crisis and global change, Pope Benedict XVI asks: “How not to evoke the food crisis and climate change, which makeaccess to food and water even more difficult for those who inhabit the poorest regions of the planet?”

A decade after the signing of the Millennium Development Goals, the position is not very promising. Not only is Development Goal1 “Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger”, which depends to a great extent on the achievement of the rest of the goals, very far fromthe target proposed, but we have also gone backwards, losing levels that had already been attained. Hunger exists, with or without cli-mate change; but the structural variations of the climate will affect the population of poor countries more than that of wealthy ones. The food and the life of the most vulnerable cannot wait.

2010 has also been a very special year for us. On 15th September it was announced that our organisation had been awarded thePrince of Asturias Concord Prize. One month later, at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo, I lived the unforgettable experience of receivingthe prize together with Cecile Samagui, the coordinator of twelve training centres for women in the diocese of N’Dali, Benin. The Northand the South were united at this event, just as we strive to do in our day-to-day work.

The jury that awarded the prize to our organisation expressed its reasons, stating that over its half century of existence, our asso-ciation “has provided its generous support, in the fight against poverty and in favour of education for development in more than sixtycountries, as well as for its contribution in all these years to specific projects aimed at combating hunger and reducing maternal deathin the world”.

H.R.H. the Prince of Asturias ended his speech delivered at the awards ceremony on 22nd October with these words: “Many thanks, then, to the vast Manos Unidas [United Hands] team. Hands that are united to help. Hands that are united to cure, feed and educate.Hands that are united, simply, to save. We hope your united hands will always be there”.

For us, this prize and other acknowledgements received are a real honour and an incentive to carry on. We are well aware thatthese awards are not only intended for those of us currently working at Manos Unidas, but for everybody who has contributed theirtime and effort over all these years, as well as our members and donors.

So, thanks to all. To those who place their trust in us. To our counterparts inthe Southern countries. To the beneficiaries of our projects. With them, with all ofyou, with renewed spirits, we’ll keep on working.

Manos Unidas is the Spanish Catholic Church Organisation for the aid, promotion and development of the Third World. It is at the same time a Catholic and secular Non-Governmental Development Organisation (NGDO), made up of volunteers.

It is our mission to fight against famine, nutritional deficiency, poverty, disease, underdevelopment, and lack of education; and to work to eradicate the structural causes producing them: injustice, unequal distribution of goods and opportunities among people and communities, ignorance, prejudices, lack of solidarity, indifference and the crisis of human and Christian values (Articles of Association, Art. 5).

our identityThe first Campaign against Hunger in the World was launched in1959 by the Union of Catholic Action Women. It came as the re-sponse to the Manifesto issued by the World Union of CatholicWomen’s Organisations (WUCWO) on 2nd July 1955, in which morethan one hundred Catholic women’s organisations declared “waragainst hunger”. Today, Manos Unidas is the Spanish Church Orga-nisation for the aid, promotion and development of the Third World.

Millennium Develpoment Goals (MDGs)In 2010, Manos Unidas celebrated its 50th anniversary, approach-ing a new reality from which to tackle the problem of poverty andhunger (MDG 1): the world’s increasing awareness of the unsus-tainable use we make of our planet’s resources, climate changeand environmental sustainability (MDG 7).

delegationsManos Unidas is a national organisation with a diocesan structure. With 71 Delegations, it is present throughout the whole Spanishgeography, this being one of Manos Unidas’ most important assets. These Delegations carry the Manos Unidas message to the citi-zens, disseminating the aims of the campaigns, raising awarenesson the problems of hunger in the world, and collecting donationsto use in development and sensitization projects. In order to meettheir objectives, each delegation is responsible for implementingan endless number of initiatives: exhibitions, concerts, solidarywalks and meals, round tables, talks, press conferences, visits fordistributing materials in parishes and schools. They are also intouch with public and private bodies, foundations, companies andthe media.

human capitalManos Unidas is, by definition, an organisation of voluntary workers.A distinguishing feature that materialises in the more than 4,630volunteers who worked all year round. Furthermore, in accordancewith our Articles of Association, the Manos Unidas governing bod-ies are made up of volunteers. Being a volunteer is a choice of life, a necessary example to createsocial awareness based on the values of willingness and sharing. But, together with them, a small number of people have contractsof employment, and they are an inseparable part of the organisa-tion, always respecting the principles and criteria of Manos Unidas.

members and colaboratorsManos Unidas has the ongoing support of its members, whose eco-nomic contributions are an important part of the organisation’s in-come. 94,803 persons supported us with their donations in 2010.In addition, Manos Unidas has the support of numerous externalcollaborators who provide their specific professional and consul-tancy services in issues related with law, economy, advertising…

Thanks to them all, the Manos Unidas task is possible.

Manos Unidas focuses all its work on two complementary activities: raising the awareness of the Spanish society on the reality of developingcountries; and supporting and financing projects in Africa, America, Asia and Oceania to collaborate with the development of the peoples of the South.

In 2010, Manos Unidas held its LI Campaign under the slogan “Against hunger, defend the Earth”, focused on the eradication of poverty and hunger, defending our home, the Earth, and the sustainability of the environment, for its direct influence on the life of the most vulnerable.

annual campaignEvery year since 1970, at the initiative of the Spanish Bishops’ Council, ManosUnidas has celebrated its National Day on the second Sunday of February- onthe 14th in 2010. The funds raised in parishes throughout Spain on this day areallocated to our organisation. As usual, Voluntary Fast Day was held in Spain onthe previous Friday, the 12th this year, as a symbol of solidarity with the millionsof people around the world who are forced to fast throughout the year. This year,to make the Spanish population aware of our campaign, an event was held atthe Mutua Madrileña conference room, in the capital of Spain, hosted by the TVpresenter Anne Igartiburu, and with the presence of two exceptional guests:Juan José Aguirre, Bishop of Bangassou (Central African Rep.), known as the“Bishop of the Poor”, and who highlighted the conflict caused by the control ofthe area’s mineral resources and its consequences, and Carlos Guillermo Paz,Director of Caritas San Pedro Sula (Honduras), who blamed anti-personnel minesfor the extreme poverty of more than 50% of Honduras population.

Manos Unidas IX ForumThe ninth edition of the Manos Unidas Forum was held on 23rd and 24th April atthe Bancaja arts centre, in Valencia, under the slogan “People or the Earth: mustwe choose? Alternatives based on hope”, with the presence of important publicand ecclesiastic personalities. The opening conference was given by Professor Rubio Delgado, from ValenciaUniversity Centre for Research on Desertification, who warned about the in-creasing impoverishment of the ground as being a “time bomb” for the future. On the second day of the Forum several panels were held (rural world and foodsovereignty, and urban poverties), as well as a round table on North-South co-operation, and a conference on economy, ecology and ethics by the professorof Moral and Political Philosophy, Agustín Domingo Moratalla. As a novelty, in 2010 the Forum activities were broadcast live on the Internet.

link operationLink Operation is an activity aimed at putting individuals or groups of people intocontact with one or more projects that Manos Unidas supports in Southern coun-tries. The aim is to contribute to a greater sensitization and commitment towardSouthern countries, by means of a series of reports explaining the situation andthe living conditions of the people being supported. Funds are also raised thatwill be used to finance these projects, although, if the total amount is not covered,Manos Unidas guarantees it will be carried out. In 2010 Manos Unidas carriedout 648 Link Operations.

education for developmentThe objective of the Education for Development area is to raise the awarenessof the Spanish population on the reality of the South. The Education Departmentis in charge of preparing educational materials aimed at Spanish schools. Thesematerials are prepared every year for Nursery, Primary and Secondary Schools, and consist of a file, designed according to the level, which contains activities, resources and documentation. The Department also organises and gives a largenumber of courses for teachers, and various workshops for specific formal andinformal education communities. The Campaigns Department also supports this awareness-raising through dif-ferent campaigns. Therefore, in 2010, work continued on “Development and Cli-mate Justice”, initiated in 2009, and internationally directed by CIDSE, and withthe participation in the action proposal of Climate Coalition, both aimed at de-manding public authorities to include climate change issues in their cooperationprogrammes.Furthermore, as a result of the agreement signed between Manos Unidas andAECID (Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation), for 4 years,3 new web pages were opened, dealing in online training and education, and aspace for a variety of training resources.

comunicaciónThe communication activities carried out by Unidas are aimed at promoting thepresence of the organisation in Spanish society and in the media, disseminatingour message and work to raise the awareness of as many people as possible. In order to do so, Manos Unidas prepares a whole range of informative and promo-tional materials: printed and electronic bulletins, information leaflets, posters, press, radio and TV spots and advertisements, inserts, videos, diaries, calendars…

In 2010, we made a TV and radio spot in which the Earth cried out for help, through images, in the hope of an answer on how to improve and preserve itsfuture and that of its inhabitants.

A group or journalists travelled to Kenya, together with the President of the or-ganisation, where they visited development projects supported by us. Also, crews from two television programmes travelled to Southern countries to makereports: TVE’s “Pueblo de Dios”, which travelled to Honduras, and Canal Sur’s“Es posible”, which visited Uganda. We also accompanied journalists belongingto the COPE-Popular TV group to Malawi.

Each year a new edition of the awards for Press, Digital Press, Radio, Televisionand Posters, held to highlight the work of media professionals who have stoodout in the task of drawing the attention of the public opinion to North-South in-equality. In 2010, the awards ceremony was held in the CaixaForum Auditoriumin Madrid.

the Queen’s visitOn 3rd November, H.R.H. Queen Sofia visited the organisation’s CentralServices, where, in addition to meeting board members and several de-partment heads, she was shown some of the premises. The Queen paidclose attention to the words spoken to her by the President Myriam Gar-cía Abrisqueta: “Welcome home again, Your Majesty. We are well awarethat you have known us for many years, that you follow our work, and weare also aware of your great sensitiveness towards those most in need”.

During her visit, the Queen showed great interest for the running of theorganisation: the projects, trips, volunteers and future challenges.

Before she left, she signed the Visitors’ Book: “To Manos Unidas withgreat affection on your 50th anniversary. Congratulations for the work youcarry out with such devotion”.

On 15th September, the Prince of Asturias Foundation announced that ManosUnidas had been awarded the Prince of Asturias Concord Prize 2010, chosenfrom 34 candidatures presented. The jury said that the prize had been given for“the generous support provided by Manos Unidas in the fight against povertyand in favour of education for development in its 50 years of history, and for itscontribution to specific projects to reduce maternal death”.

The Spanish Bishops’ Council expressed its great satisfaction for the award, having been responsible for the presentation of the organisation’s candidatureto the Foundation.

Manos Unidas received the prize with “great emotion and gratitude, but alsowith humbleness and with a renewed spirit of work and collaboration” towardthose most in need, travelled to Oviedo, represented by its President, MyriamGarcía Abrisqueta, the members of the Committee and Cécile Samagui, ourcounterpart in Benin and an example of all those who have benefited from ourwork, to pick up the award from the hands of H.R.H. Prince Philip, who, in hisspeech, praised our organisation and said he hoped that our “united hands wouldalways be there”.

The prize money (50,000 euros) was donated to a project to help the populationdisplaced due to the Haiti earthquake.

Manos Unidas funds projects for agricultural, health, educational and social de-velopment, and for promotion of women’s rights, aiming to help the integral de-velopment of people in Third World countries. It also participates when requiredin emergency and humanitarian relief during catastrophes and other exceptionalcircumstances.

For Manos Unidas, development is a process that must lead to social reform andchanges in the North and South alike, so that decent living conditions are reachedfor everyone. The projects are born out of the needs of the population of less de-veloped countries and are a tool to encourage the development of peoples, theireducation, nutrition, etc. In short, they have to contribute to the eradication ofpoverty.

Collaboration by Manos Unidas is never used for warring or partisan ends, orthose that imply violence or aggression towards people or the environment.

a proyect cycleEvery day Manos Unidas receives requests from the remotest parts of Africa,Latin America, Asia and Oceania, which we study and analyse in detail, as theyhave to fulfil a basic requirement: the beneficiaries, the true protagonists of theprocess, must also be the promoters of the proposals and responsible for imple-menting them.

The process starts with an application or desire for change, and goes through aprocess of acknowledgement and analysis of the reality to be changed, endingin an action being determined for achieving this aim. The steps of the processare: reception of the request from a local organisation in the South; study anddiscussion of the request by the team in the corresponding geographical area, contact with the local partner asking for the necessary documentation and in-formation, and the preparation of a study record; proposal for the approval or re-fusal of the project, stating the form of financing; the final decision of the approvalor refusal on the part of the Standing Committee. If the project is approved, nar-rative and financial follow-up will be made, as well as a follow-up trip and anevaluation report.

Unfortunately, due to the limitation of our resources, we can only support a partof the applications we receive.

participation of beneficiariesWe support those projects that are the result of reflection and analysis, and weencourage participation by the target group, as the involvement of those directlyaffected is an indispensable condition for the future sustainability of the initiatives.

We insist on the need for the local population to acquire sufficient technicalknowledge so that the projects can keep on working once external aid has cometo an end. This is because our aim is not restricted to resolving specific needs, but encourages the processes which allow for the identification of problems andthe search for solutions on the part of the beneficiaries. Furthermore, the projectsrequire close monitoring, which implies direct contact with our counterparts whoare responsible for the projects in the South.

5 work sectorsThe action of Manos Unidas in Southern countries focuses on five work sectors:agriculture (improvements in living standards of the rural population); education(children, young people and adults); healthcare (prevention and curing of diseases);social promotion (increase of community awareness and responsibility); promo-tion of women (recognition of their rights, and skills development). The last ofthese is also an axis present in all the previously-mentioned sectors.

in all projectsThe promotion of women is a task of ongoing importance. Ex-perience and life show us that investing in women as produc-ers of family income, educators of children and responsiblecitizens is an assured value, the benefits of which reach notonly the more reduced family scope, but also that of the com-munity, and therefore, of the country as a whole.

Haiti earthquakeIn 2010 Manos Unidas helped the Haitian population following the devastating earthquake that struck on12th January, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale. The effects were felt in an area of up to 100 kilometresand, following the initial panic, Haiti was plunged into chaos, which still exists in many places today. Theresult: many tens of thousands dead, millions of victims and incalculable material damage. Manos Unidasmanaged to raise more than 2,800,000 euros thanks to the generosity of the Spanish people. After providingthe first emergency relief, work started on rebuilding, mainly in the West, South and Southeast, althoughaid was also sent to the outskirts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and to another department in the Centre.

Manos Unidas has been working in Haiti for 30 years, and, thanks to its members and collaborators, ini-tiated a process to improve the living conditions that had been lost as a result of the quake.

Social PromotionA person is not completely fulfilled if he/she does not take partas a social being in their relationship with the rest of the peopleliving around them. Through others, one acquires the fundamen-tal values of life. Therefore, projects in this sector are aimed atmaking the population aware of community responsibility and im-proving the quality of life in these communities. For this purpose, support is given to a wide range of activities such as the buildingof infrastructures, the training of leaders, the adaptation of socialfacilities or activities aimed at promoting Human Rights.

HealthcareWithout health, not even the most basic of the development goalscan be achieved. In its absence, it is difficult to make any pro-gress. By supporting projects in this field, Manos Unidas aims toprevent disease by creating, equipping and improving communityclinics and hospitals, promoting vaccination campaigns and pre-ventive medicine, and by aiding in the training of healthproviders, and through other services.

AgricultureLivestock farming and agriculture, primary and basic sectors, arethe main means of livelihood and subsistence for a large numberof people around the world. Despite their huge importance, thesesectors are threatened by unfair commercial measures and by alack of resources for their development, which forces many fam-ilies to emigrate to the cities in search of new opportunities. Theprojects supported by Manos Unidas in this sector seek to pro-mote agriculture and livestock farming, thus improving livingstandards for the rural population through a range of differentinitiatives.

EducationEducation is one of the great priorities for development. The es-tablishment of societies based on justice and equality whichrespect people’s integral development and dignity as human be-ings, largely depends on the promotion of education. The creation and equipping of schools or vocational training cen-tres, the training and education of both children and adults, courses which allow increased literacy rates and adult educa-tion… are some of the goals that Manos Unidas supports in thissector.

16

The awards an recognition received by Manos Unidasin 2010 did not prevent it from working non-stop in favour ofthe most vulnerable and poor.

During this campaign, the messages launched at thepublic opinion were aimed at improving Man’s relationshipwith the Earth. God gave us the Earth to use it, not to abuseit. Over-exploitation of resources, deforestation, or air andwater pollution are examples of how we treat it.

This Earth, created by God, is His gift to all people, notjust a few. Many people still lack arable lands while thereare vast extensions not in use, many constantly live with ashortage of water, and others cannot cope with drought orthe reforestation of their impoverished soil.

“Against hunger, defend the Earth”, was the message ofManos Unidas.

This message is in tune with that given by Pope BenedictXVI at the World Day of Peace: “If you want to cultivate peace, protect creation”, in which he calls for the “strengthening of

the covenant between human beings and the environment”.

The Earth is not inseparable from Man, the centre of allcreation. That’s why true ecology has to take special careof the person, all persons. The attention given to animals indanger of extinction, for example, can never take the ex-traordinary place of those human beings who are dying ofhunger or begotten and unwanted children.

The so-called developed societies often behave as ifnatural resources were unlimited. We use a lot more thanwe need, and it is clear that we can live more austerely.“Let’s remind the most disadvantaged peoples of their dutyto live more frugally”, said the Manifesto that inspired thecreation of Manos Unidas, in 1955. And the same documentdemanded “an economy of needs, instead of the currenteconomy of pure gain”.

A simple life, aimed at God, caring for what surroundsus, capable of using the land without destroying it, and see-ing the world as a whole, always bearing in mind our fellow

why do we do it?

creatures, and especially never forgetting that the weakestshould gain ground among us.

The Earth is not a private property, but it belongs to usall, and we are under the obligation to take care of it so thatit will be there for future generations to enjoy. Likewise, wemust advance towards a model of production and interna-tional relationships that effectively support those who haveno access to the basic goods of this world.

The Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church(Number 486) states: “There is a need to break with thelogic of mere consumption and promote forms of agricul-tural and industrial production that respect the order of cre-ation and satisfy the basic human needs of all. […] Theseattitudes, sustained by a renewed awareness of the inter-dependence of all the inhabitants of the earth must be facedas a strong motivation for an authentic solidarity of world-wide dimensions.”

We advance in that direction when we promote valueslike austerity, sharing, generosity, subordination, the cultureof peace and friendship. We do so when we have strongfaith in the dignity of all human beings, and the awareness

that they are our brothers and sisters. Also with specificcommitments toward those who lack everything. Manytimes Jesus pointed us in that direction of the specific: “ForI was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, andyou invited Me in, naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.”(Matthew 25: 34-36).

The message is clear. Putting trust in Him, we continueworking, and trying to be bearers of hope, in search of goodfor our fellow creatures.

Congratulations to all those who have made the workcarried out by Manos Unidas throughout 2010 possible. Mythanks to workers, members, partners and all those whohave placed their trust in our Association. We shall con-tinue working endlessly in order to eradicate the greatdrama of hunger in the world.

MediaManos Unidas would especially liketo thank all the national, regional andlocal media (newspapers, magazines, radio and television channels) forbroadcasting our messages and forthe free publication and broadcastingof our announcements and spots.

The work we carry out to help the world’s poorest countries would be impossible without Manos Unidas’ friends and col-laborators. A long list of volunteers, employees, members, individual and collective donors, companies, banks, associationsand foundations support this work through donations, co-funding of development projects, sponsoring initiatives or by pro-viding a range of services. The contribution of schools and parishes is especially significant.

Many thanks to all of you.

Due to limitations of space we cannot mention them all. We do not include the list of bodies that co-fund developmentprojects as they figure in our “Projects Book”, published alongside this Annual Report.

Many, many thanks to you all
