1 Black soils The shallow and medium black soils are grey to deep black in colour (mostly pellustert) clay to clay loam in texture. They contain lime nodules and the base saturation is high with medium to high water retaining capacity. The Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) is fairly high ranging from 50-70 me/100g. The silica sesquioxide ratio (SiO2/R202) is around 3.5
60%
2 Gravelly red soils
Light textured soils having low organic carbon content and low to medium, phosphorus and potash status. They contain low water retention capacity. Soils are grouped in alfisols.

Title: TS-3R and BSMR-736 promising pigeonpea varieties for rainfed and irrigated conditions respectively: A case study
Background: Prior to the popularisation of TS-3R variety of pigeonpea, farmers of
Raichur district were growing local varieties like Gulyal local and old variety i.e., Maruti which were susceptible to diseases and mature in 170-180 days there by farmers need to spray 3-4 times for pest control. The yield level of these varieties were in decreasing trend over the years besides farmers used to grow these varieties in irrigated condition there by not realising higher yield.
Interventions:
Process: In collaboration with seed unit KVK, Raichur of UASR started popularisation of new pigeonpea variety TS-3R, which matures in 150-160 days, resistant to the wilt disease and well suited for medium black soils. KVK, Raichur also popularising BSMR-736 variety under protective irrigation since from last two years and took demonstration on 75 acres of farmers field
Technology: KVK, Raichur scientists made the efforts on integrated crop management in pigeonpea through on & off campus trainings, group meetings, news paper coverage, radio talks, TV programmes etc.on technologies like seed treatment with CaCl2, trichoderma, biofertilizers, rhizobium and PSB, maintaining optimum plant population, nipping, moisture conservation techniques, integrated pest management etc.
Impact:
Horizontal Spread: Farmers of rainfed areas were advised to choose TS-3R and BSMR-736 variety for irrigated areas. . During the year 2011-12, 75,000 acres and 2,000 acres of area brought under the cultivation of variety TS-3R and BSMR-736 in rainfed and irrigated conditions respectively. Balanced application of nutrients use of biofertilizers helped in avoiding over exploitation of soil Economic gains : Average net profit after adoption of integrated crop management practices increased to the tune of Rs. 11500/ ha with the variety TS-3R under rainfed condition and Rs. 35000/ha and additional net revenue of the district was of 120 crores with the variety BSMR-736 under irrigated conditions.

Title: MBA graduate towards scientific sheep rearing: A Success Story Background: Sheep are among the main meat-producing animals in India, whose meat is one of the choicest meats and has huge domestic demand. Due to its good economic prospects, Sheep rearing under intensive and semi-intensive system for commercial production has been gaining momentum for the past couple of years. High demand for Sheep and its products with potential of good economic returns have been deriving many progressive farmers, businessmen, professionals, ex-servicemen and educated youths to take up the Sheep enterprise on a commercial scale. The emerging favorable market conditions and easy accessibility to improved Sheep technologies are also catching the attention of farmers. KVK made an intervention to promote this enterprise by conducting short durational training programmes for rural youth and interested farmers.
An unemployed MBA graduate Mr. Issaq resident of village-Askihal District-Raichur, attended a Training Programme on Commercial Sheep Farming organized by KVK , Raichur for 4 days in the year 2010. Being inspired and motivated by the scientists of KVK he started a Sheep Farm in Yaramarus (Dandu) village in the year 2011. The sheep farm was established with 120 Kenguri Sheep ram lambs reared under stall-fed intensive system of management.
Intervention: Initially Mr. Issaq faced a number of problems like high cost of fodder cultivation , high cost of concentrate feed formulation, high mortality and low weight gain . The scientist from KVK visited his farm and suggested changesin feed formulation of sheep feed using low cost ingredients, vaccination schedule, deworming schedule, Technical guidance for fodder cultivation and effective marketing strategy and strengthening linkages with the other farmers. Accordingly Mr. Issaq introduced changes in his sheep farm. Consequently his sheep farming project became viable and profitable. Mr. Issaq remained continuously in touch with the scientists of KVK through Scientist-Farmer Interactive Meets, Farmers Field School on stall feeding of sheep using latest scientific information on sheep production for his benefit. The mortality in ram lambs, which was 10 % in the beginning, now has decreased to about 3% to 5 % per annum. He sells his ram lambs only on live body weight basis at the rate of Rs. 160 to Rs. 200 per kg of live body weight. Impact:
a) Economic growth : Before intervention his annual gross revenue of the sheep farm was Rs. 6.5 lakhs and total annual expenditure is Rs. 5 lakhs giving an annual net income of Rs.1.5 lakhs. After intervention he solely involved in Sheep stall feeding farm (Lamb fattening) with present annual gross revenue of the sheep farm is Rs. 7.5 lakhs and total annual expenditure is Rs. 4.5 lakhs with an annual net income of Rs. 3 lakhs.
b) Horizontal spread: After observing successful establishment of broiler sheep farming, 10 farmers in Raichur district have taken up this occupation and started stall fed sheep farming.

Title: Management of Cotton reddening through Nutrient Management -a success story
Background: The newly introduced Bt Cotton is grown in Raichur distrct almost entirely even under rainfed condition. There was lot of incidences of Cotton reddening in this crop. The crop was successfully coming up even under draught as is a indeterminate crop. The yield levels were also low.
Interventions:
Process: KVK, Raichur started implementing in farmers field, the frontline demonstrations on nutrient management since 2007-08. For the last four years frontline demonstrations were conducted in 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10, and 2010-11 at village Sunakeshwarhal, Budinal, Jalibenchi and Hokrani of Raichur and Manvi taluk as in an area of 55ha and 137 participating farmers on nutrient management.
Technology: In the demonstration treatment use of recommended nutrients NPK 150:75:75 kg/ha based on soil test (soil fertility ratings) and spray of magnesium sulphate (MgSO4)( 5 g/litre) and 19:19:19 spray grade (10 g/litre) at 50 and 75 days after sowing.
The demonstrations are conducted after selection of farmers and village soil samples use to be collected subsequently analysed and soil test based nutrient recommendations will be explained through pre-seasonal training conducted to educate on nutrient management of the crop. The critical inputs were distributed as and when required. Frequent visits were made to observe pest and disease menace.
Impact:
The yield levels were 24.3, 20.0, 12.5 and 28.0 % increase over farmers practice in the years 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10, and 2010-11 at village Sunakeshwarhal, Budinal, Jalibenchi and Hokrani of Raichur and Manvi taluk respectively.
The increase in Gross income and net income as a result of increase in yield in all years. The yield levels were less in 2009-10 because of the prolonged dry spell of 65-70 days during the growing season followed by flood. In spite of all that farmers were able to get some yield. The net profit excess over check in all 4 years were Rs. 12163, 11923, 6847 and 22690 per hectare which depends on the market rate at the selling the produce.
When the crop is about harvest a field day was conducted in all the years to show other farmers about the success of the demonstration plot along with specialists and agriculture officers in the region. There was less incidence of reddening and early boll opening in demonstration plots compared to check.

Title: Use of Balanced Nutrient Management in Paddy-Paddy cropping system -A success story
Background: Paddy-paddy is a major cropping system of Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal Command area of Raichur and Koppal districts of Karnataka in medium to deep black soils. There is continuous lowering of nitrogen level in soils of this region because of scant use of organic manure or crop residue incorporation etc. by farmers, but there is build up of phosphorus and potassium in soil because of continuous use of fertilizers.
Interventions:
Process: A frontline demonstration on INM in paddy was planned and executed in farmers’ field from last five years.
Technology: The inputs used in demonstration plot were 100 ± 12.5: 50 ± 12.5: 50 ± 12.5 N: P2O5: K2O Kg/ha respectively according to soil fertility ratings based on soil test (50% N as basal and complete phosphorus and Potassium and 25% N each at 25 and 45 DAT) and zinc sulphate @ 20kg/ha along with incorporation of Daincha @ 25 kg/ha at 45 days after seeding as per the University Package of Practices (POP) for Northern Eastern dry zone(Zone II) of Karnataka.
Farmers Practice: Farmers are not applying recommended dose of nutrients although in the ratio of N: P2O5: K2O 2:1:1 but they apply phosphorus and especially potassium in later stages even up to 2 months after transplanting, where, it should have been as basal. The organic manure or incorporation of green manure as per the recommendation is neglected continuously. They apply unbalanced and untimely which has no scientific base.
Impact:
The results of the three years data on use of balanced nutrients in Paddy in farmers field indicated that crop yields were higher (average 25.3 % increase) in demonstration field as compared to farmers practice in all the years and irrespective of places (Table 2) along with increase in net return and higher B: C ratio (Table 3). The general observations in field made were good crop stand and early panicle initiation apart from healthy crop and lower pests and disease incidences in demonstration plots as is evident with field photographs. Although farmers apply more fertilizers (double or triple the recommended dose) they are obtaining less yield and less net return and lower B: C ratio. The reason being that they delay application of Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers which are to be applied in basal as plant takes up 2/3rd of it’s requirement in the initial 1/3rd f it’s growth. Farmers are applying fertiliser which is unbalanced and untimely.

Title: a Success story of sweet orange grower Background: Smt. Chandrakala Virupakshappa is a SSLC pass lady with special interest in farming. Her husband is doctor. Thus with financially sound background she would have sat at home looking after household chores. But, being born with agricultural background and interest in farming she took up horticulture as her career and has succeeded in her venture. Intervention: Process This family had a 14 acres of land. During 2005 they contacted KVK scientists and decided to go for sweet orange cultivation. They purchased 1750 Sathgudi variety seedlings and planted them @ distance of 18x18”. A pit of 2.5x2.5x2.5” was dug per plant and compost, neem cake, blacksoil and a pesticide Themat was added to this pit. And after planting The plants started flowering after three years. The husband is always busy in the hospital and his wife Smt. Chandrakala looks after the orchard. Technology Smt. Chandrakala creates artificial scarcity of water during the month of January and August and then manages to irrigate thus she harvests twice a year. The harvest size of May is little smaller than compared to that of November. Timely irrigation, application of micronutrients has resulted in healthy orchard. Each tree bears minimum of 1000 fruits. They have managed to maintain live fencing around the orchard which acts as source of fodder for the livestock reared by labour families who are provided cottages at the orchard itself. This family stays in the farm itself. Curryleaf trees planted along with the bunds brings an additional income of Rs. 500/week. The labour families have started sheep rearing in between the sweet orange trees which will act as a bonus to their wages. Impact: Horizontal spread The sweet orange orchard has become a model to many other farmers. This technology has spread to other villages surrounding Sirawar. Raichur ranks first in the state in regard to sweet orange cultivation with an area of more than 4000 hactares. Economic gains Farmers strated geeting economic yields from fourth year of plantation. On farm trading is the practice being followed. The traders from Kurnool district of Andra Pradesh come and harvest the yield. They have harvested around 200 tonnes from 14 acres in two seasons with an income of 16 lakhs. There is no harvesting and transportation expenses due to this arrangements. Employment generation There are two farm labour families with two members each working full time in the field. They undertake all the activities of the farm. They have adopted mechanical spraying system. Hence are not much depending on additional labours. On farm trading has also saved the expensed in harvesting.

Case study of millet demonstration in Raichur
Raichur district receives limited rainfall of 720 mm every year, many times this rainfall also is a mirage to farmers. In such critical conditions it is the millet which support the farmer by supplying food, fodder and fuel. In this direction, popularization of millets deemed essential. Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Raichur has undertaken various interventions in order to make them popular. The details are as follows
1. Demonstrations of Bajra 2. Demonstrations of Foxtail millet 3. Demonstrations of Sorghum 4. Value addition to minor millets 5. Promoting sale of minor millets by linking up markets through NGO’s 6. Organising trainings under INSIMP (Initiative for Nutrition Security through
Intensive Millet Promotion) 7. Arranging Millet Mela: A state level event
Value addition to millets demonstration was undertaken during the year 2011-12. For this three self help groups were selected and were imparted knowledge on demonstration of value added products from Bajra (Roti) and Fox tail millet – various recipes like conventional foods – sanding, Padha, Vermicith, Ladu, Roti, Malt were prepared.
About 30 rural youth were trained in the preparation of above said recipes.
These SHG women members are now preparing few items and are selling then to a Bangalore based firm. Additional items which are served along with roti are also being prepared and sent to Bengalure SWARD is an NGO which is outing as liaison between SHGs and marketing firm. The women express their happiness and have become economically empowered.
