President’s Message

Dear friends:

As an IIT Bombay alumnus/a, your support for the GO-IITB (Giving Opportunities for IIT Bombay) campaign makes a significant impact for our alma mater. Thanks to your generosity as donors, IITBHF has raised over $33 million over the years to support IIT Bombay’s “Tryst with Excellence”.

Proceeds from the GO-IITB Campaign have supported:

· Young Faculty Award (YFA) program helping IIT Bombay recruit world-class faculty

· HATS initiative for Hostels

· Scholarships and fellowships for the students;

· Alumni services and connectivity that is top among peer schools, with an active presence on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn;

Note that IITBHF is an all-volunteer organization that strives to send all alumni contributions to IIT Bombay , with no overhead costs, even while maintaining close contact with the IIT Bombay Administration to ensure proper oversight and governance. Please visit the alumni website at http://www.iitbombay.org/donate to review the comprehensive Fund Utilization Reports that document how alumni contributions are being put to effective use.

IIT Bombay continues to be ranked #1 in India and in recent years JEE aspirants are voting with their feet to reaffirm our position as the pre-eminent engineering school in India. 70 out of the top 100 JEE rankers selected IIT Bombay over all other IIT campuses this year, continuing a trend that has held for many years now.

Grassroots support from alumni like you has helped support many important initiatives including named scholarships, Research and Teaching Excellence awards, Student, Hostel Alumni Stewardship and Young Faculty Award. Major projects on campus supported by alumni contributions via IITBHF in the past year or two include the Victor Menezes Convention Center, DS Foundation Gymnasium supported by IITBHF Chair Bharat Desai, and the Wadhwani Research Center for BioScience and BioEngineering which has received the generous support of Romesh Wadhwani.

IIT Bombay is facing many challenges as it strives to maintain high standards of excellence while more than doubling the student population on campus. New infrastructure and faculty members are needed to support this rapid pace of growth.

Our alma mater needs our support in every way we can … through monetary contributions, personal time, access to our contacts, etc. Please join your fellow alumni in building a global network of IIT Bombay alumni, students, and faculty by participating regularly in IITBHF activities. Not only will you help your alma mater, but you will also help your own career and business prospects while renewing old friendships and making new ones.

Your gift, at any level, makes a difference. In so doing, you not only strengthen the value of your own degree but send a message to your fellow alumni about the importance of giving back.

I invite you to make an instant online tax-deductible contribution to the GO-IITB campaign today, at www.iitbombay.org/donate or support the GO-IITB campaign in any other way you wish to, including mailing in your check, making a securities donation, or getting corporate equipment donations. Please visit www.iitbombay.org for more information and news from IIT Bombay, and contact the GO-IITB Team with any questions at [email protected].

MissionTo fund and promote education and research among students of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay). The organization will achieve its goals by providing financial and other resources to IIT Bombay and supporting and fostering alumni gatherings in chapters and groups assembled for the purpose of service to IIT Bombay.

Charitable Purpose To channel donations, bequests, gifts and grants from the alumni, chapters, associates, benefactors corporations, or trusts for use in education and research at IIT Bombay in the fields of technology, science, social science and humanities.

Donations are used for• Purchase of equipment research and education• Establishment of reference and research facilities• Construction and renovation of research and education facilities• Acquisition of real estate• Establishment of endowments that IIT Bombay may use for its future growth and maintenance• Scholarships and fellowships for students attending IIT Bombay, and for any other purposes

specifically designated by donors, provided the donation furthers the education and research missions of IIT Bombay.

Alumni Services Purpose To foster fellowship among alumni through local chapters, provide a forum for communication among alumni, disseminate continuing education about IIT Bombay, and, provide the means for involving alumni in support of IIT Bombay and the mission of the Heritage Fund.

Chapter OutreachAn active network of Chapters creates local communities of IITB alumni, which in turn connect into an expanding global network. Graduates of IIT Bombay are urged to take full advantage of this powerful network that connects alumni across a diversity of age, experience, interest and geography.

Boston ChapterThis year the Boston Chapter was fortunate to host the IIT Bombay Faculty Alumni Network (FAN) 2011 Research Symposium. In conjunction with the FAN meeting, a Boston Area Alumni Reunion was also organized. The alumni reunion was held in the evening on October 8, 2011. The attendees at both meetings included local and visiting alumni, Ram Kelkar, President IITBHF, and a number of IITB faculty members. Prof. Devang Khakhar gave an update on the projects and initiatives IIT Bombay was currently involved in. Jit Saxena, a 1966 IITB graduate and a successful serial entrepreneur gave a very inspirational keynote address at the alumni reunion event on his experience as a technology innovator and entrepreneur.. The theme of his talk was “Entrepreneurship and its Ecosystem”. He concluded it by saying that entrepreneurship is the best form of philanthropy. After the successful completion of these meetings, the chapter volunteers are looking forward to participating in the GO-IITB 2011 fund-raising campaign.

New York ChapterWith more than 1,000 active members and many dedicated volunteers, the New York chapter (IITBAA-GNY) is among the most vibrant and dynamic alumni organizations of IIT. In 2011, the New York chapter hosted or supported several events including a reception for Director Professor Khakhar in July, a farewell for Dr. Ajay Gondane, (an accomplished diplomat, author, and friend of IIT Bombay), the IITB Reunion at IIT 2011 NYC, and a book reading by Phiroz Madon. The IITB Reunion at “PANIIT 2011”, held in New York, was a grand success with over 70 alumni in attendance. Deputy Director Prof. Pandalai and Dean ACR Prof. Contractor represented IITB. Much like IITB’s spectacular Golden Jubilee celebrations held in NYC in 2008, PANIIT 2011 was yet another class act and speaks of the ability of volunteers, most of whom happen to be IITB alums. Two out of the three co-chairs of PANIIT 2011 - Kumar Shah and Gautam Advani - are IITB alums. IITBAA-GNY is planning various events in the near future such as networking and mentoring events, community participations, book readings, and a gala to support IITB. For more details of chapter events, please visit http://www.iitbombay.org/chapters-and-events/newyork /home.

Bay Area ChapterThe SF Bay Area chapter of the IITBHF is one of the largest and most active IITB alumni chapters with more than 1000 registered members. The chapter organizes several social, professional and networking events throughout the course of the year. Some of the events organized in the past year (i) Talk and panel discussion on India’s Unique ID program (ii) PANIIT Innovation Summit (iii) Networking lunches, Happy hours and Annual Picnic (iv) PANIIT Diwali Dhamaka and (v) IITB West Coast reunion event (SF Bay Cruise). The highlights of the year were IITB performance at PANIIT Diwali Dhamaka and the Bay Cruise. At the PANIIT Diwali Dhamaka, IIT Bombay team gave a complete entertaining performance on the theme of “Romance IIT Style” and was close 2nd in the inter IIT competition. SF Bay cruise, organized on September 24 as IITB west coast reunion event in 2010, was a sold out event. It was a perfect evening for the cruise with temperatures in mid 70s. More than 150 alumni and their families enjoyed the breathtaking views of the bay along with live entertainment, music and dance. For more details of chapter events and to view pictures/videos of past event, visit http://www.iitbombay.org/chapters-and-events/san-francisco-bay-area/home

Collaboration between IIT Bombay and Applied Materials Inc.One of the most active academia-industry collaboration currently going on at IIT Bombay is with Applied Materials Inc., a world leader in semiconductor equipment manufacturing, headquartered in Santa Clara, USA. AMAT has supported IITB to the tune of about half a million dollars per year for the past five years. The collaboration has been made possible by the outstanding contributions of IITB alumnus Pravin Narwankar, Regional CTO, Applied Materials and has involved:

· Infrastructure development: AMAT has donated state of the art semiconductor manufacturing equipment valued at $7.5M in 2007 to be housed in the Applied Materials Nanofabrication Laboratory at IITB.

· Sponsored Research and sponsorships of technical conferences and entrepreneurial events.

· Supporting faculty and student visits to the company’s Santa Clara campus.

· Social and Philanthropic Activities: by installing solar-powered LED lighting along IITB’s avenues, and donation of solar lanterns to evening schools which has benefited 15,000 underprivileged children in 4 Indian states.

Collaboration between IIT Bombay and Qualcomm Inc.Another very important academia-industry collaboration going on at IIT Bombay is with Qualcomm Inc., the leader in next generation mobile technologies, headquartered in San Diego, CA. The collaboration between the two institutions has existed since 2008. Qualcomm’s Global Social Responsibility Program has donated high capacity advanced FPGA prototyping platforms to IIT-Bombay. The main person who was instrumental in facilitating this was Mr. Suhas Pai, Sr. Director, Technology, CR&D, Qualcomm, Inc.

Mr. Pai worked with Professors Dinesh Sharma, Sachin Patkar and Dr. Gaurav Trivedi of IITB and arrangements were made for shipping the equipment. The equipment was thoroughly tested and assembled as a platform by Mr. Suresh Patel with help from Mr. John Garrity and Mr. Andreas Burkhardt. Prof. Patkar was also introduced to Aldec Inc. and Bluespec Inc., so they could obtain the necessary licenses for his research use with the platform. Prof. Patkar notes that a number of final year and grad students have jumped on the platform for their research and plans to teach Bluespec as part of advanced curriculum.

Both Mr. Suresh Patel and Mr. Suhas Pai are alumni of IIT-B and consider it to be their privilege to help their alma-mater advance their research goals. IITB recently made requests for more units, which Qualcomm is in the process of honoring.

Faculty Alumni Network (FAN)FAN is a network and community of IIT Bombay alumni with backgrounds as researchers, university faculty, students, and administrators.

FAN partnered with IITBHF and the Boston Alumni Chapter to host the 6th FAN Research Symposium in Cambridge, MA on October 9,

2011. The theme of the day-long symposium was “Materials for Energy” and it was attended by over 50 participants, including several IIT-

Bombay alumni, who were graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at various U.S. institutions. The symposium organizer was Prof. Balaji

Narasimhan, the Associate Dean of Research at Iowa State University.

The first plenary talk was delivered by Prof. Vinayak Dravid of Northwestern University, who spoke about the intricate relationship between

science, technology, education, and policy in the energy sector. Prof. Ramesh Ramamoorthy of University of California, Berkeley and the

Program Manager of the Department of Energy’s SunShot Program delivered the second plenary, which was focused on the DOE’s efforts

in solar energy. Both plenaries sparked off great discussions, and laid the platform for a focused bilateral Indo-US effort in the solar energy

area, in which IIT-Bombay could play a central role. The six invited speakers spoke about areas ranging from spintronics, gas turbines,

shape memory alloys, carbon nanotubes, solar energy, fuel cells, organic electronics, and energy policy. In addition to the faculty, IITB

was represented at the symposium by Director Devang Khakhar, Deputy Director HS Pandalai, Dean of Faculty AK Suresh, and Dean of

International Relations Subhasis Chaudhuri.

Hostel Alumni Team Stewardship ( HATS) is an important alumni-driven initiative that aims to

channel the affection that many alumni have for their Hostels. HATS

started with the Hostel 7 campaign in 2006, and continued with the

Hostel 4 campaign in 2009. Under the leadership of an enthusiastic

“core team”, HATS has leveraged the past successes to develop a

campaign for all hostels.

The focus of HATS is to improve hostel infrastructure and facilities,

assist mess workers, empower students to improve their living

conditions under the aegis of Make Hostel My Home (MHMH), and

to organize hostel level reunions in each hostel on Alumni Day. To

date, 287 donors have contributed to HATS. This has helped nearly

200 mess workers. As of Sept. 2011, HATS has raised over Rs.1.2

Crores ($243,000), with Hostels 7, 4 and 8 (collectively with 74%)

leading the race.

Young Faculty Awards, popularly known as YFA, was set up with a vision to attract top-notch young faculty to IIT

Bombay and nurture their development in supporting IIT Bombay’s “Tryst with Excellence” and continued global technological

leadership. It seeks to encourage the best teaching and research talent to opt for IITB in preference to other institutes by offering them

a joining bonus of Rs.3 lakhs (US$ 6,100) over a period of 2 years. The YFA team has recently announced an increase in the joining

bonus to Rs.4 Lakhs (US$ 8,200) which will be payable to every faculty member hired after June 16th, 2011. The monies raised have

been spent to hire over 93 new faculty members. This has resulted in a significant change in the faculty map of IIT Bombay. YFA’s

continued success depends upon its ability to build up a substantial corpus of at least Rs.10 Crores (US$ 2 millon).
