DEAR FRIENDAs you read this annual report, I hope you will come to share my pride in the success we have had since our founding by a courageous group of parents in 1942. PROVAIL has grown to be one of the largest disability service providers in the Northwest region, and we have built a skilled workforce of over 340 employees to support over 1,500 clients each year with a $12 million budget. In this report, you’ll see data about the numbers of clients and types of services being provided in each of our programs. There is no question that we are having a major impact every day.

Feedback from our clients, their families, employers and our funders, tells us that we are truly doing good work. But, the sad reality is that good is not good enough when the people we are here to support continue to face some of the biggest and most pervasive barriers of any group in America. Poverty, unemployment, lack of access to transportation, housing and health care remain the hallmarks of experience for most people with disabilities.

Over the past year, PROVAIL has been implementing new strategic plan goals across the organization. We have developed a new set of strategic priorities that is aimed at broad social change rather than incremental program growth. As an organization, we are not content to continue to chip away at persistent problems in our community, when we could be working for fundamental, transformational change.

I invite you to be part of that changing conversation by joining our team. We are actively working to grow our Board of Directors, our volunteer force and our community network. Please let us know if you would like to be involved in some way. Together, we can effect the change that is needed to ensure that every one of us has the right to pursue the life we choose to live.

Sincerely,

Michael Hatzenbeler, President and CEO

CREATING CAREERSYou never know where job creation can happen. In the blink of an eye, you may have created someone’s first career.

The great partnership between PROVAIL and Best Plumbing started on the 16th hole at the 2013 PROVAIL Golf Classic and Auction. Michael Goodwill, PROVAIL’s Transition Services Manager had met one of the owners of Best Plumbing on the course, and after a brief conversation he was confident that the company had a keen interest in PROVAIL’s Supported Employment services.

By the 18th hole, the conversation turned into more of an interview than an introduction. And before the final putt, Best Plumbing offered a job to Transition Program participant Michael!

Michael, a student in the Seattle School District, participated in the North Seattle School-to-Work program from 2012-2013. He had good work experience through the program at organizations like Phinney Ridge Senior Center and the City of Seattle’s Department of Parks & Recreation. He also volunteered regularly, was involved in his community, and had developed a great skill set working on office tasks. Michael started working at Best Plumbing in July of 2013. He is responsible for cleaning the kitchen and bathrooms. With the help of job coaches and the great staff at Best Plumbing, Michael is doing very well and has been able to continuously expand his independent workload. The owners and staff at Best Plumbing say that Michael is doing a wonderful job, and he was recently asked if he’d like additional hours and tasks.

Sounds like the beginning of a great career!

Michael clocking into his daily shift.

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS

Martin, left, and his guide summit Mt. St. Helens on April 18, 2014

Martin Schuler was involved in a near fatal car accident in August 2009. Family and friends were unsure that Martin would survive such severe injuries, but Martin was able to move forward and begin the healing process. Although his accident changed his life, he is not one to let a traumatic brain injury define who he is. “My motto is ‘no fear,’” says Martin.

A Seattle BrainWorks Clubhouse member, Martin has never been one to shy away from an adventure. He’s skydived in Nevada, hiked various mountains, and has self-declared himself as a ‘risk taker’. Martin says that family is a defining inspiration for him. He has three sons that push him to accomplish and try things he would not try without their support.

“[My] boys are the reason I get up everyday and push myself to climb,” said Martin. “I want to show them that when you want something bad enough you can accomplish anything you want in life.”

In 2013, Martin was inspired by his uncle who tried to climb Mt. Rainier twice, but each time was forced to stop due to altitude sickness. He told himself, “If he can do it, so can I”. He set a goal that in 2015 he would climb Mt. Rainier and has been climbing a series of mountains, such as Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Shasta, to prepare.

On April 18th, 2014 at 6:10 a.m., Martin hit the trail at Mt. St. Helens for the second time. Not being able to summit during his 2013 climb due to weather, Martin and his guide kept each other motivated and pushed through their physical and mental challenges. They successfully summitted Mt. St. Helen’s at 4:13 p.m., where the breathtaking view gave them a panorama of Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood and Martin’s ultimate goal, the top of Mt. Rainier.

An important part of Martin’s return to climbing is weekly visits to the Seattle BrainWorks Clubhouse. “For me, visitng the Clubhouse has given me confidence by seeing other people with a TBI and knowing that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to because we are all in the same predicament... It’s great seeing other members try and succeed.”

SEATTLE BRAINWORKS

The Seattle BrainWorks Clubhouse provides short and long-term support to people who have experienced traumatic brain injury. By empowering survivors of brain injury to relearn skills and create strategies that will help them reintegrate as happy and successful members of the community, members are able to transition from being “patients” to again being active participants in life. In 2013, Seattle BrainWorks grew to 75 members, established a volunteer project with the Lake City Food Bank, and logged 8,369 member hours.

Special thanks to our advisory board members: Elizabeth Crouch, Bjorn Krane, Michele Kauffman, Mike Hatzenbeler, Terry Furnia, Tiffany Kopec, Dr. Janet Mott, Janice Navarre, Andrea Okomski and Valerie

DENTAL CLINIC

Adults with disabilities face signicant barriers to obtaining community-based dental care. The PROVAIL Johnny Johnson Memorial Dental Clinic helps address the gap in services by performing over 1,600 dental services each year to 735 clients. The all-volunteer staff of dental professionals are committed to helping adults with disabilities receive the best care possible. Thank you to the volunteer dentists and hygienists who make this work possible.
