Annual Report 2015 – 2016

Dear Friends,

Every year, thousands of San Diegans are confronted by challenges — hunger, domestic violence, mental illness, lack of transportation, or even the death of a loved one. By offering compassion and outcome-driven supportive services, Jewish Family Service helps people build better lives.

On the following pages, you’ll find a summary of our accomplishments over the past year, our impact across the community, and the difference we’ve made in the lives of thousands of individuals. It is a celebration of the many ways we’ve acted together to fulfill our purpose to build a stronger, healthier, more resilient San Diego.

Because of generous community support, we’ve been able to assure those who turn to Jewish Family Service now and those who will need us when confronted by life-changing challenges in the future, that we are moving forward together.

Together, we are building a community of stronger families, greater opportunity, and healthier lives at every age.

Annual Report 2015 – 2016 Jewish Family Service | Moving Forward Together

Lazar speaks five languages, holds a Ph.D. in marine biology, and is a proud great-grandfather. At age 88, he became a Bar Mitzvah at the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Campus.

Lazar’s journey with JFS began when his parents emigrated from Russia in 1979. Lazar waited patiently and finally secured a visa to visit them in 1989. Once here, he couldn’t imagine going back. With JFS by his side, Lazar found steady employment and housing, and was granted political asylum. He worked and saved for three years to bring his wife and daughter to join him.

These days, Lazar is a regular at the Balboa Avenue Older Adult Center, where his Bar Mitzvah was held. With his family and friends from the Center in the audience, Lazar took time to remember those who could not be there — his wife and father, and the extended family who never made it out of Russia. He said he hoped they would be proud.

“ To have someone show up with a meal and maybe sit with you for a while — that’s community.” – Marty

There are a handful of people with a signed copy of Marty’s memoir. Nancy, his volunteer Foodmobile driver, is one of them. A retired history professor, Marty devoted his life to inspiring his students’ love of learning. When Nancy stops by to deliver his meals, Marty always has something interesting to discuss.

“He’s a fascinating person,” says Nancy, who’s going back to school to become a counselor. “Sometimes I’ll show up to find him reading in a language I didn’t even know he spoke. It’s hard for him not being able to get out like he used to, but he keeps learning and motivates me to do the same.” Their lunchtime conversations give them both something to look forward to, and remind Marty that he still has the capacity to inspire.

JFS is dedicated to ensuring older adults lead safe, independent, and healthy lives — and are active members of our San Diego community.

“After mom passed away, dad was so depressed he couldn’t get out of bed. He lost his appetite and eventually the strength

to walk. His doctor told us we both needed to get out and live. Connecting with JFS has been a blessing to us both. Now, dad comes home and won’t stop talking about his friends at the Center. He tells me, ‘Man, we had a ball today.’”

For Derek, being matched with a Jewish BIGPal gave him the confidence to find his own path. Twenty years later, he’s helping his Little Pal Aden do the same. For Derek, being a Big Pal is his way to give back and finding his place in the Jewish community. More than anything, he loves finding common ground with his little pal.

‘Aden’s a super bright kid and he really thinks about things, says Derek. ‘He asked me about the meaning of Judaism the other day.’ Derek admits he doesn’t always have the answers, ‘but I tell Aden, I’m more than willing to learn it with you, and I’m always here if you want to talk.’”

As a certified Service Enterprise, JFS is a leader in leveraging volunteers’ skills, talents, and resources strategically and thoughtfully at all levels of the agency. We are committed to creating meaningful opportunities for people to direct their deepest passions and unique talents in service to our clients.

In 2015– 2016, 759 volunteers contributed 52,946 hours of service, valued at $1,460,789.

JFS serves as the supervising agency for the AmeriCorps Volunteer Infrastructure Project (VIP) in San Diego County. We train and coach AmeriCorps VIP Fellows in the best practices of volunteer recruitment and management, and place fellows in nonprofit partner organizations across San Diego.

In program year 2015– 2016, 10 VIP Fellows provided 17,000 hours of service at partner sites in our community.

Each year through our Embrace-a-Family Program, individuals, families, and groups in the community help ensure families in need have a joyous holiday celebration. Many Embrace-a-Family recipients would not have Hanukkah or Christmas celebrations without this program.

In 2016, 300 Embracers and donors provided 450 families (1,500 individuals) with holiday gifts.
