COMPREHENSIVE EMERGENCY LIFE SUPPORT (CELS) COURSE:
A GRAND SUCCESS
Emergency medical care is one of the most crucial components of health care
and is of prime importance to our country where mortality and morbidity is due
to the lack of standardized emergency care. Every second, numerous events
result in serious injuries threatening a life. These life threatening events
mandate fast and appropriate action, and hence, trained and skillful persons is
the need of the hour. Early and comprehensive approach of Airway, Breathing
and Circulation are the most important aspects for survival of life in such
dreadful scenarios.
With this idea we thought of formulating a course, especially for the health care
providers, which will give them an opportunity of hands-on skill practice of
managing life threatening scenarios. This gave birth to Comprehensive
Emergency Life Support (CELS) Course, the first of its kind in India.
The 1st CELS course was conducted on 4th of February 2018, as a “one full
day” course, at our own Skill Centre at Trauma centre, BHU. The occasion was
graced by respected Director, IMS-BHU, and patron of the course, Professor Dr
VK Shukla, who inaugurated the ceremony. The course ran smoothly by
coordinated efforts of Professor SK Mathur, Course Director, and Professor In-
charge, Skill Centre and 15 other faculties of various departments of IMS, BHU.
This was attended by 22 delegates including nursing staffs, paramedics, junior
and senior residents of departments of ENT, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Dentistry
and Anaesthesia, along with Emergency Medical Officers and Teaching
Faculty. It was a huge success. This was considered as the first baby step of
our idea of departing our knowledge for betterment of the needful.
Based on the feedback, huge response and continuous requests, we
conducted our 2nd CELS course on 11th February, 2018, with 31 delegates,
which included interns of Faculty of Medicine, IMS, BHU, along with health care
providers of various peripheral hospitals of Varanasi. We were lucky to have
Professor Dr JP Ojha, Dean of Faculty of Medicine, IMS, BHU, with us, who
was kind enough to inaugurate the 2nd CELS Course. The feedback we got
from the delegates was, again, very encouraging.
With all the support and encouragement, we are planning to deliver the
skill course in a similar manner to all the health care providers of IMS, BHU,
and across the whole of Varanasi with a motto of “Service to Mankind”. Hoping
for a similar kind of enthusiasm to “learn” the skills of comprehensive
emergency care and to “serve” the needful.
