PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Joel Rembach The club entered the 2017/18 season looking to continue on from a couple of successful years that saw 3 Premierships. Without the incentive of the Maccabiah Games, however, there was a lot of debate as to whether we would be able to field a successful Saturday XI. In the end the Saturday XI was retained along with 2 Sunday XI teams. There were a number of significant changes made during the off season, the most significant was appointing Lal Jayasinghe as Coach. Rowan Bricker informed the committee that he was not able to commit to the coaching role from last year.
The junior club and Maccabi Victoria recommended Lal to us. Lal and his team have proved to be a revelation, both from a skills and training approach. The team can be proud of their efforts and the improvements that many of our players and teams made during the season. Moving Wednesday training from Albert Park to Caulfield Park was also successful.
We also moved to one‐day cricket for all teams based on feedback that we have been getting from our players for a while and trying to maximise the player pool with players that may not be able to commit to two day cricket.
On the field, we had a season that was probably a bit different to previous seasons, with the 1st XI finishing the home and away season 2 points off first place while our 3rd XI and Saturday XI finishing at the bottom of their divisions, reflecting the exit of a lot of the Maccabiah players from last year and an inexperienced playing group. The 1st XI, although losing the semi‐final, really show great promise for seasons ahead. The 2 wins for the 3rds late in the season should set a foundation for next year. My thanks to the Captains; Benji Jones, Steven Lustig, Josh Goldsmith, Sammy Brygel and Ian Jones for leading your teams during the year. I wish Ian “Fos” Jones all the best in his retirement from cricket. His contribution to this club will not be forgotten and I hope he will continue to be involved in some manner in the future. A cricket club is not easy to run. When I agreed to take on the Presidency this season, it was on the proviso that each member of the committee takes a portfolio and are accountability for their roles. I can say that this has been the most dedicated and hard working committee that I have been involved with in 24 years of involvement. Mark Soffer

was a tremendous help to me as Vice President, earning him the Kurt Defris award this year, even being consulted on various issues from his hospital bed. Ian Ludski took on the role as Secretary as well as Social Media, Parks Victoria, Maccabi Victoria and MCA delegate. These all take a lot of time out of his week and ‘Luddo’ was up to the task. JJ Zimmet took over the Treasurer from me and was up and running with very little instruction. As well as captaining the 1st XI, Benji Jones looked after cricket operations and was the coach and curator delegate. Mike Gersun and Paul Fink had general positions on the committee with both performing a number of jobs throughout the year, in particular, assisting us (with Josh Gelfand) in putting on a fantastic Past Players Day. Wayne Myers was junior delegate whilst juggling his roles at Bentleigh CC. Even Allan Goldstein was able to wrap up players fee collection before leaving the committee on parental leave. Lastly I would like to recognise Leon Jacobs. It takes around $60,000 each season to keep this club running, of which, player fees cover only 20% of expenses. Leon began sponsorship and fundraising initiatives when he was President but has continued this role since vacating the Presidency. Without Leon’s efforts, our club would be in jeopardy.
Which brings me to the sponsors themselves. We are extremely grateful to our sponsors who provide a great deal of financial support with disproportionate reward other than knowing that they are providing a community where Jewish players, of all levels of can play cricket. I would particularly like to acknowledge the involvement of our major sponsor Gary Peer.
Thanks to all of you as your support of me as President. I wish to acknowledge my wife Arona and kids Eden and Noa who are either oblivious that I accepted the role of President again this year, or have turned a blind eye to it.
Enjoy the break and lets look towards a successful 2018/19. Joel Rembach President

1st XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Benji Jones The Maccabi Ajax First XI had an improved season in 2017/18, reaching the finals for the first time in 3 years. After a Round 1 washout, our season started promisingly in Round 2 as a 104 run unbeaten partnership between Benji Gore (71*) and Jacob Jones (35*) guided us to a total of 200 which proved too much for Clayton District who made 168. However we were inconsistent over the next three weeks, losing two and winning one to be 2‐2. Our best batting performance of the year came against Doveton in Round 6. With solid top order scores from Mendy Rosenbaum (44) and Benji Jones (42) the platform was set before a sensational undefeated partnership of 102 between Jacob Jones (41*) and David Fayman (60*) helped us to 4/218 which proved too much for Doveton who made 161. We continued our winning ways for the next five matches putting us on top of the ladder after Round 15. However a tight loss to 2nd placed Carnegie brought us back to second and in the latter rounds our inconsistency returned and we couldn’t string back to back wins. We finished second on the ladder which was a promising result given the club had finished the previous two years on the bottom. Unfortunately we didn’t play our best cricket in the Semi Final as Malvern (4/188) got away from us early before we pegged them back well. Benji Gore was the pick of the bowlers with 2/29 from his 9 overs. After an early wicket, Mark Soffer (31) and Benji Jones (21) brought the game into Maccabi’s favour at 1/51 before the latter ran out the former causing a collapse that we couldn’t recover from as we finished all out for 115. Our best win for the year was in Round 11 vs Clayton Blues. Charlie Gross made 68 in our total of 192, while Corey Zielinski made 30* and took 2/24 in his First XI debut. Jacob Jones was the match winner, taking 3/26 and an incredible run out as we snuck home by 7 runs.

Other notable performances throughout the year include:
Josh Jones scoring 40 vs Carnegie in Round 12 on a day when 20 wickets fell for 148 runs. He backed up his batting heroics with 4/19 to seal another memorable victory after Carnegie were bundled out for 50 chasing 98 having been 2/36.
Simon Fisher taking 4/23 vs Carnegie in Round 16 from 9 overs on a small Princes Park although Carnegie got us back and scraped home by 2 wickets.
Benji Gore taking 4/19 vs Melbourne Cobras in Round 17 as we rolled them for 76.
Overall for the season Benji Jones was the standout batsman scoring 304 runs @ 25.33. Other batsmen to do well included Benji Gore (199 runs), Mendy Rosenbaum (183 runs), Shmuli Rosenbaum (180 runs), Mark Soffer (174 runs) and Charlie Gross (151 runs). For the bowlers Simon Fisher took 24 wickets @ 14.29 while Josh Jones took 23 wickets @16.48. There many other solid contributors with the ball including Bailey Melzak, Ari Werdiger, Benji Gore, Mark Soffer, Benji Jones and Shmuli Rosenbaum. We took the most wickets in the competition and I believe we have the best attack in the league. Ultimately as a team and a club we need more batsmen who work harder to make bigger scores. There were only three half‐centuries in the season which isn’t good enough. We have plenty of allrounders (the Jones brothers, Mark Soffer and Benji Gore) which gives us lots of flexibility, and the best bowling attack in the competition with a lethal opening pair (Josh Jones and Bailey Melzak) and superb spinners (Simon Fisher, Mark Soffer and Shmuli Rosenbaum). However there is still plenty of improvement left in all of us, and being such a young squad this is particularly exciting. Names such as Benji Gore, Bailey Melzak, Jacob Jones, Charlie Gross and Corey Zielinski are all under 21 and have huge potential. It was a privilege to captain the First XI of this incredible club. I thank all the players for their commitment to the team, their support of me as captain and for being such a good bunch of blokes. I’d also like to thank the Committee for all their work behind the scenes, and in particular Ian Ludski for always going above and beyond. Looking forward to going one better in Season 2018/19! Benji Jones 1st XI Captain

2nd XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Steven Lustig
The 2nd XI experienced a year of transition in season 2017/18, as a number of retiring premiership players from the previous season were replaced by young players coming through the club. The scoreboard often didn’t truly reflect the contest this season, as small lapses often proved the difference in highly competitive matches against sides near the top of the ladder. With 48 players used in the side throughout the season, consistency in selection was unfortunately hard to come by. The first half of the season was a number of ‘what ifs’, with the side losing several matches due to the inability to compile big scores with the bat. Often fielding sides who were mainly in their teens, the focus as the season went on was to develop and learn from every match. Disappointingly, weather denied the team in consecutive weeks against Powerhouse and Monash University as the side looked set to pick up a win in both matches. The team’s effort never wavered though and was rewarded with a deserved victory against Burnley in the second last match of the season. Despite only putting 97 on the board, the team truly believed that we were capable of claiming the victory. Sensational bowing by Corey Zielinski (5‐15) and Ari Werdiger (4‐13) helped dismiss Burnley for 66 and claim a memorable win. By far the most positive aspect of the 2nd XI’s performance this season was the emergence of a number of rising stars. Despite their young age, guys such as Aaron Ostilly, Charlie Gross, Corey Zielinski, Bailey Epstein and Marley Israel all became integral members of the team. I expect them to build on their seasons to lead the club into the future. Adam Back, Josh Goldsmith and Jack Lehrer all returned to play for the club and played crucial roles throughout the season, with all three having the potential to play regular 1st XI cricket next season.

Some of the individual highlights of the season included
Mark Soffer claiming 5‐16 in the first match of the season Adam Back taking 5‐51 and hitting 34 in just his second match of senior cricket Ian ludski’s 4‐20 off 9 overs against Burnley Charlie Gross striking 44 not out at more than a run a ball on a slow pitch against
Monash University Veterans Doovie Cohen (53) and Simon Morawetz (48 not out) sharing in a 81‐run
partnership in the draw against Powerhouse Aaron Ostilly’s all‐round performance of 5‐37 and 29 against premiers Parkville
District Ben Machlin’s stylish 59 almost securing the win against Youlden Parkville in
round 16 I am highly confident that the development that the side experienced this season will hold us in good stead for the years to come. Hopefully we can continue to develop together as a team, as the talent in this team suggests the club is in good hands. Yours sincerely, Steven Lustig 2nd XI Captain 2nd XI PARTNERSHIP STATISTICS:

3rd XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Sam Brygel
Whilst in regards to our win/loss record, season 2017/18 left a lot to be desired, highlights from an individual and team perspective were still aplenty for the Maccabi Ajax Thirds. I have to firstly state that I missed a large chunk of the season. I was studying at a Chabad Yeshiva in Jerusalem. Unfortunately, the purpose of my trip, which was to find a beautiful Chabad wife, was left wholly unfulfilled, similar to my cricketing potential that I was told about as a youngster. However, not to worry, before leaving for my mid‐season trip, I left the team in an absolute purple patch of form, averaging 2.00 after making 12 runs from 6 knocks, with a few ducks thrown in as well. On the topic of Chabad and beautiful Chabad girls, mention needs to go to Thirds stalwart, Nadav Moskow, on his recent engagement to Zeecee Vorcheimer. With his post‐season announcement, Nadav has managed to cement his place within the team by ensuring that he will perpetually bat well above his average‐ a true hero to us all in the Thirds. The most obvious success story of the season was certainly Western Australian recruit, Dean Wainstein (he was released from his contract with Maccabi Western Australia for the price of two sausage rolls). The 24‐year‐old man with the silver mop picked up a handy 25 wickets @8.08. I haven’t even had to check mycricket.com.au for his stats as I received a painful weekly update on wastsapp each week. On a slightly serious note, Dean’s commitment to both the team and improving his own game was astounding throughout the year. Dean’s persistence in ensuring that he regularly bowled a consistent line and length saw him become my opening bowler every week, seemingly always producing at least a few wickets, even if they were mostly in the 44th over as the other team was 1/220 and going for the tonk! When one thinks of the neshoma (soul) of the Maccabi Ajax Thirds, their minds are undoubtedly cast to the dynamic duo of Phil Lisovetsky (I still can’t spell his surname properly) and Zac Aflalo. One of the individual highlights from the season was certainly Zaccy’s mammoth 62 against Moonee Valley. Unlike last year, whereby upon encroaching his maiden half century, Zaccy had to retire mid‐innings due to his Booba’s birthday party, this year his Booba decided to have a quiet affair, ensuring a free calendar and a maiden half‐century for Zaccy. The celebrations were something else, with the 10‐strong crowd seeing the helmet come off and a plethora of fist pumps and bat‐thrusts towards the non‐existent change rooms. On the topic of celebrations, Zac’s partner in crime, Phil Lisovetsky
Page 17

Page 18
took the cake for the season when upon taking his first wicket in senior cricket, he proceeded to celebrate by chest‐pumping half the team, with the well‐built specimen knocking most of us to the floor. Unfortunately in true Thirds spirit, Phil appears to have acquired a beautiful Chabad girlfriend of his own and has since left us. While Phil’s career batting stats of 21 runs from 17 digs @1.40 may not be so memorable, his presence on the team certainly is, as well as the frequent highlights that he would provide us. Most notably, handing the umpire both his hat and a packet of skittles from his pocket when he was given the ball for an over. Phil we would love to see you back next year and to Zaccy, congratulations on a fantastic year which you can attribute to all your hard‐work in the nets. After my Yeshiva experience during the summer, I came to discover that the cricketing career of Barry Kave shares many similarities with the legacy of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. Whilst the glory days for Bazza and the Lubavitcher Rebbe were certainly in yesteryear, their devout followers refuse to let the dream of redemption die. Just like the spiritual euphoria that one would inhale when receiving a famous dollar bill from the Lubavitcher Rebbe, there is nothing quite like seeing the 69‐year‐old pensioner roll the arm over on a hot summer’s day. Whenever someone drops a catch, which is usually a pretty regular occurrence in the Maccabi Ajax Thirds, my initial frustration and disappointment is immediately improved when I hear Bazza mutter “oh for f**ks sake!” to himself. Bazza, I have wanted to tell you something for a long time, ever since I started playing for this club as a twelve year old. I just love you. However, please don’t grow a long white beard otherwise I will have to start having pictures of you on my fridge and in my wallet. I want to thank the guys who played regularly in the Thirds. Jono Baruch remains a highly committed player to the team; constantly striving for improvement on his game and his improved fielding was noticeable too. Zak Pollak was another shining light this year, often opening the innings with the bat, but also wicketkeeping frequently due to laziness of yours truly. Zakky showed his potential to keep regularly both in the Seconds and Thirds whilst also demonstrating the qualities to be a future leader of this great club. Season 2017/18 also revealed a nice surprise in the form of experienced bowling threesome, Nadav Moskow, Eli Barr and club secretary Ian Ludski taking on unfamiliar batting roles for the team. These guys must be credited for refusing to allow their wicket to be cheap, often contributing with handy runs for the team, as well of course taking regular wickets

with the ball. I also wish to thank Ian for all his hard work and dedication to the club and the Thirds, and all the guidance that he provides me both on and off the field. Despite only playing a handful of games, Amir Meyorowitz provided another season highlight with a scintillating 58 run knock early in the season, showcasing his potential to play First XI cricket for the club in future years. Eli Paneth was perhaps best known for his self‐made lunches from lunches from home, with the contents adorned in a top of the range esky, but also contributed significantly on the field with a career high score of 33. Alon Esterman provided many highlights, taking several fantastic catches in the deep and also revealing himself to be handy with the ball, namely, as a spinner who doesn’t spin the ball but takes wickets because the batsmen are under the impression that he does. Lastly, whilst he covered himself in glory with neither bat or ball, self‐appointed comedian of the Thirds, Ben Paluch, provided many laughs. Ben constantly sledged the opposition and just acted with a general aura of buffoonery on the field, to the extent that he was quite understandably branded a “flog” by CEO of Cricket Australia, James Sutherland, when Ben decided that a C‐grade Sunday match would be an appropriate place to sledge the CEO of Cricket Australia about the player‐pay dispute whilst he was batting with his 11 year old son. Of course, no season review of the Maccabi Ajax Thirds would be complete without my co‐skipper and retiring legend of the club, Ian ‘Fossil’ Jones. It is fair to say that the ‘Fossil’ and I share a very different relationship depending on if it is footy or cricket season. During the footy season, the Fossil is my coach at Ajax. Thus, during the winter I constantly hear from the bench, “Sammy lay a bloody tackle! Sammy stop having shots from the boundary! Sammy no dribble kicking for goal! Sammy stop trying to start fights!” Fortunately for me, in the summer, Fossil and I share a more even‐handed relationship, and I love our constant chatter and jokes from wicketkeeper to first slip. In his last season for the club, Fossil took an inspirational 25 wickets @10.60. However, Fossil, you are so respected and loved by all your teammates not for your stats, despite their impressiveness. Rather, you are respected and loved because you are simply just the best bloke and someone who each and every guy at the club looks up to. I have loved co‐captaining with you in the last two seasons and you will be missed greatly on the field. On behalf of the Maccabi Ajax Thirds team, I wish to thank you for your enormous contribution to our team and the club. As you can see from my report, the Third XI enjoys a very distinct team culture. It is a culture built first and foremost on trying to win games of cricket, but a culture where having a fun and a laugh with 10 Jewish mates is a close second. We may not be the best

cricketers at the club, but I really believe that we are the lifeblood of the club. It is no secret that we have suffered in the last few seasons from a win/loss perspective. However, like my wish to marry a beautiful Chabad girl, we all need dreams and the constant commitment and desire to improve amongst the Thirds players fills me with hope that success is on the horizon and we can one day win a premiership for this club. I would like to also thank club President Joel Rembach and the entire Board for everything they do to ensure that we can go out on a Sunday and have a laugh. Please God I will see you all at my wedding to a beautiful Chabad girl. Sam Brygel 3rd XI Captain

JUNIOR CLUB REPORT - Howard Machlin, President
It is an unexpected pleasure for me to provide a report for the 2017‐18 season. There have been a number of very exciting and positive developments at the Junior cricket club this season. The most significant change this season was having Lal Jayasinghe as the Director of Coaching for both Junior & Senior cricket clubs. Lal brought a whole new level of professionalism to Maccabi Cricket. Lal has mentored and developed our coaches so that the Club now has more coaches, that are better prepared than ever to teach the players the skills of the game. The drills and activities that have been employed by Lal, the specialist coaches and the broader coaching panel are very impressive to observe. The most important thing for me has been seeing the obvious enjoyment on the faces of the players during training sessions. This is a testament to Lal’s coaching philosophy and to the time and effort that our coaches have put in to preparing the training sessions. The next most significant change was in the format of the game at the Under 11 Age group. Maccabi Ajax participates in the Inner South East Cricket (ISEC) competition. Every junior cricket competition in Australia was instructed by Cricket Australia to modify the format of Under 10, 11 & 12 cricket this season. Despite significant apprehension and reservations regarding the changes, those players & parents involved were overwhelmingly positive about the new format. Next season there are projected to be further changes in the Under 13 age group. Having taken the huge leap this season, I expect next season to be a sequence of smaller steps. The feedback from the Under 13 modified teams regarding this “transitional” format has been mostly positive and this is what all Under 13 competition is likely to look like next season. This season we had two under 15 teams, three under thirteen teams, three under thirteen (modified) teams and three under 11 teams. There were 45 participants in the T20 Blast competition and 25 participants in the Milo in2 cricket program. There were nearly 200 players involved in junior cricket this season.

Both U15 teams played their home games on turf wickets at Albert Park. I thank the Senior cricket club for their ongoing co‐operation in enabling this to occur. The Senior club are now getting used to the experience of having a junior team playing a game on the Sunday morning with a Senior team following them on to the ground in the afternoon. Our Senior club held their training sessions at Caulfield Park following the junior clubs’. This produced a feel of a “larger, unified club”. Many of the junior’s team coaches continued into the Senior’s training sessions, as did some of the junior players. This is a positive development as both clubs continue to explore formal reunification. A highlight of the season was the Club’s performance. There was some excellent cricket played in all age groups this season. If we simply measure performance by the number of teams participating in finals & the number of premierships won, then the record for this season would show the U13(Modified) Reds, U13 Jets & U15 Warriors played finals with the Reds & Warriors going on to win premierships. This is the first time since 2008/09 that the club has won 2 premierships in a season. Well done to these teams. But this simple statistic does not do true justice to the level of performance across the club. The U15 Colts are a case in point. Often struggling for numbers to make a team and playing on turf wickets for the season, the team achieved 2 wins – the first for this team for as long as I can remember. Other teams, but for a handful of runs or wickets in certain games would be counted amongst the list of teams in finals. In addition, we had players involved in various levels of representative cricket and many players who finished near the top of the batting & bowling tables for their grades. If the level of performance continues on its current upward trajectory then coming seasons promise to be very exciting.
