Annual Report | 2018
Our mission:
To promote an ecologically, socially, and
economically healthy city and county. www.sustainablecorvallis.org/your-donation-counts
Creating a healthy, welcoming community
Acting on climate
Addressing climate change at the local level is crucial to solving the problem globally.
Selected by the City of Corvallis to support the work of the newly appointed Climate
Action Advisory Board, the Coalition is helping to implement the “Community”
sections of the Corvallis Climate Action Plan.
We also worked with the City of Corvallis to advance the creation of the commercial
PACE (Property Assessed Clean Energy) program in our area. With support from
Coalition volunteers, this Coalition initiative is now being led by staff at the City and
the Oregon Cascades West Council of Governments.
Our Harvest Sunshine team hosted two events (“When the Grid Goes Out” and
“Solar Makes $ense”) that led to increased solar installations in our community.
Supporting active transportation
A culture of walking, biking, and bus ridership are key to a sustainable community.
The Coalition provided bike valet services for nearly 700 attendees at
Septembeerfest and Fall Festival. Volunteers transported the racks by bike.
We helped organize the 2nd annual Open Streets event, and continued to
promote bus ridership on the CTS through our “Get on Board” campaign.
During our 4th annual “Trip-by-Transit”, participants used the Linn-Benton Loop
bus to go to Albany and back, demonstrating how fun and easy it is to use public
transportation.
Fostering a secure local food system
A secure food system revolves around food that is locally produced, using practices
that renew and enrich the land and community.
Our “Eat 40% Local” campaign included “Simply Seasonal” recipes distributed to
thousands through social media, Food Day activities such as the community Apple
Crunch and distribution of free Farmers’ Market tokens to kids, and our 9th annual
Local Eats Week that featured local ingredients at 14 area restaurants.
The 9th edition of our Corvallis Garden Resource Guide was distributed to 800
current and prospective gardeners, and we sponsored three Edible Garden Tours
that featured community garden plots at different times throughout the season.
Neighborhood Planting Kiosks located at 16 residential and public sites displayed
weekly informational posters to support gardening and neighborhood connections.
The physical and social well-being of our residents are critical to sustainability.
Seeking positive solutions to address homelessness, the Coalition led the initial steps
to create Corvallis Opportunity Village. We enlisted the guidance of Square One
Villages, which provided a workshop for key social service and government agencies,
as well as a public presentation for interested community members.
In addition to continuing our Green Cleaning campaign to encourage people to
choose safe alternatives to hazardous household products, we initiated a project
focused on Indoor Air Quality Monitoring. Forty-six homes were monitored for a
week. Residents received reports and tips for improving indoor air quality.
Encouraging waste prevention
Protecting natural resources
Our personal well-being and the livability of our societies depend on a life-
support system that is healthy and thriving.
The Coalition continued regeneration projects along Dunawi Creek,
Lamprey Creek and the Mill Race, planting more than 1,000 native shrubs
and trees, and enlisting the help of more than 300 volunteers.
In collaboration with the City and other partner organizations, we
coordinated the design and installation of eight public watershed displays
in four Corvallis watersheds.
We coordinated the 9th Annual Natural Areas Celebration Week,
engaging community members in appreciation of our natural areas
through more than 25 unique events.
Promoting economic vitality
Vital to a sustainable community is a diverse, vibrant economy that meets people’s needs and
is anchored by a broad spectrum of locally owned, environmentally friendly businesses.
Our Saving Green program helped local businesses increase their energy and water
efficiency, reduce their waste, and save money in the process. For example, our part-time
staff helped 11 local businesses convert from tube fluorescent to tube LED lighting,
resulting in an annual savings of over 164,000 kWh and $16,000 on their power bills. The Coalition and its partners co-sponsored the 8th Annual Buy Local First Day & Holiday
Contest, encouraging community members to “think local first” when making purchases.
Nature’s patterns and cycles have shown us that waste-free systems are possible.
A $45,000 grant from Oregon DEQ enabled us to create a new program to
prevent wasted food called No Food Left Behind - Corvallis. In its first year, the
program has reached thousands of people through Farmers’ Market outreach
and consumer education, including a website and printed materials that offer
tips for food purchasing, storage, and preparation.
We distributed thousands of copies of the Corvallis Area ReUse Directory at 70 locations, keeping countless perfectly good items from being landfilled.
Our 90 Recycling Block Captains delivered waste prevention information to nearly 4,000 Corvallis area households every 4 months.
Celebrating community
Recognizing the sustainability accomplishments of our partner organizations and
action teams helps inspire further action.
The Coalition’s annual Sustainability Fair and Town Hall was attended by more
than 500 people. Our “Community Scrapbook” slide show highlighted the work of
our partners, and Town Hall keynoter Asher Miller of the Post Carbon Institute
helped attendees explore the path to a resilient community.
Our Quarterly Gatherings and monthly Sustainability Events Calendar provided
opportunities for community members to learn about our partners’ activities.
OUR VISION FOR THE COMMUNITY
Corvallis is a community in which the needs of the present are
met without compromising the ability of future generations to
meet their own needs. It is a flourishing and thriving city with a
vibrant economy that respects, restores, and cares for the
community of life.
OUR GUIDING OBJECTIVES
Our community will:
1. Reduce and ultimately eliminate our community’s
contribution to fossil fuel dependence and to wasteful use of
scarce metals and minerals. Use renewable resources
whenever possible.
2. Reduce and ultimately eliminate our community’s
contribution to dependence upon persistent chemicals and
wasteful use of synthetic substances. Use biologically safe
products whenever possible.
3. Reduce and ultimately eliminate our community’s
contribution to encroachment upon nature (e.g., land, water,
wildlife, forests, soil, ecosystems). Protect natural
ecosystems.
4. Support people’s capacity to meet their basic needs fairly and
efficiently.
2018 DEVELOPMENT
HIGHLIGHTS
We continued our efforts to develop a
strong financial and volunteer base for the
organization in several ways:
Determined that the funds received
from the City of Corvallis for our
support of the Climate Action Advisory
Board will be used for a major climate
action project.
Increased the Annette Mills Corvallis
Sustainability Coalition Endowment
Fund by more than 16%.
Successfully applied for a grant from
the Oregon DEQ that will fund the
development of an online Directory for
ReUse and Repair.
Sponsored a retreat for Steering
Committee members and action team
leaders that focused on social justice.
Insights and tools from the retreat will
be used to create a process for our
action team projects and events to
model social equity.
