Our Story Our Work Dear Friends and Colleagues,

FAMILY SUPPORT. The Alliance offers a Family Support program that provides care coordination for children and adolescents with brain injuries and their families. Eligible families receive emotional support, information and resource referrals and connections to services.

PUBLIC EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH. Educational sessions cover a range of topics geared towards those affected by brain injury, professionals and the general public. Through seminars, conferences, workshops, webinars and more, we are able to provide the community with the most up-to-date information in the field of brain injury.

PREVENTION PROGRAMS. Staff works in the community to educate people of all ages about ways to prevent injuries. Awareness programs cover transportation, sports concussion and fall safety and provide strategies that can prevent a brain injury. Information and resources are available through our website and social media.

ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS. This sector defines and strives to achieve public policy goals that are of importance to people with brain injury and the general public through work with legislatures and members of CHIC (Council for the Head Injured Community).

Where The Money Goes

SUPPORT COORDINATION. Our support coordinators work with the individual and their family to ensure that they are able to maximize their personal choice and quality of life. We identify services to be purchased through clients’ Division of Developmental Disabilities budget and develop, monitor and adapt their service plans as needed.

85%of funds went directly to programs and services.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey (the Alliance). The world of brain injury has transformed dramatically over the years and the Alliance has been proud to be at the forefront of identifying and responding to these changes in New Jersey.

We have remained true to our founders’ recognition that those affected by brain injury needed easy access to current information and resources, support and educational opportunities. Our first program was an Information and Resources Helpline, and when it became apparent that individuals with brain injury and their families needed more intensive support, our care coordination service was established. Today, we provide these direct services to more families than ever in need in New Jersey.

Ten years ago, the Alliance noted a surge in the incidence of mild traumatic brain injury, or concussions, and in response, launched a statewide concussion committee comprised of concerned professionals. A Concussion Summit was held at Giants Stadium, and the Alliance became a leading voice providing information and advocacy on this important topic. Today, the Alliance is deeply involved in concussion education efforts across the state and plays an important advocacy role to protect students who have sustained concussions and support their return to school.

In 35 years, the delivery of information has evolved dramatically with the internet and social media, and we are proud that the Alliance has kept pace with technology. We have an extensive online presence, including our website that hosts a wealth of information about brain injury and is visited by more than 150,000 annually, and our social media that serves as an interactive support and information source. Additionally, we are proud to be introducing our first mobile app this year.

This year also saw our long-time esteemed President and CEO, Barbara Geiger-Parker transition into the role of Chief Strategic Officer. We are thrilled to have her continued support and expertise through our change in leadership.

To our donors, partners and friends, we thank you for making our work possible. If you are a potential supporter, we welcome you to learn more about our programs and services. It is your generosity that can help to raise awareness, support programs that prevent brain injury, and make the difference for a family that is struggling with the aftermath of a brain injury. We at the Alliance are committed to making this vision a reality.

With appreciation and warm wishes,

BROADENING OUR REACH. Social media has become the primary source of news

and information to the general public. The Alliance has responded by increasing our

presence to spread brain injury awareness and prevention strategies. This approach

offers an immediate resource for those seeking information and encourages discussion.

In 2016, Facebook named the Alliance the Number 1 Page to Watch in our sector.

Camp TREK. Camp TREK (Together in Recreation, Exploration and Knowledge) is

the Alliance’s week-long residential program providing independence, socialization

and recreation for adults with brain injury, as well as a respite for caregivers. This year,

government funding for Camp TREK was cut, however thanks to the generosity of our

supporters, we were able to sustain the program’s 30-year reputation for 45 campers.

PREVENTING FALLS. Falls are the leading cause of brain injury, especially for those over

the age of 65. The Alliance addressed this issue by adopting an award-winning senior falls

prevention program, A Matter of Balance. The program is designed to inspire confidence,

increase mobility, flexibility and strength while teaching fall avoidance techniques.

All thanks to you!

T ank You2016 was a remarkable year thanks to our board, staff, volunteers, and donors.

You helped make all of this possible.

Support Our MissionThe Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to the support and advocacy for individuals impacted by brain injury and education through prevention and outreach. Since being founded in 1981 by a small group of concerned parents of children who had sustained a brain injury, we have grown to become the primary source of information, education, advocacy, support and hope for the thousands of people in our state living with brain injury.

It is estimated that 175,000 people in New Jersey are living with brain injury, and approximately 12,000 injuries are sustained annually. This means that our job is never done. Your support is crucial to helping raise much needed funds for the families we support, whose emotional and financial needs can be life-long. There are multiple ways you can contribute:
