A Message from Our Leadership
Sherwood Forest Camp has been fulfilling its mission of
transforming lives through camp experiences since 1937. We
help children realize a future beyond anything they could imagine
and provide them with the tools to achieve it. Sherwood Forest
Camp creates healthy, caring communities where children
develop character and competence.
In 2012, we celebrated our 75th anniversary! The past 75
years are full of treasured memories and historic milestones,
including several notable contributions to organized camping.
Among the highlights are the development of a leadership
training program in 1941; the introduction of the St. Louis
area’s first outdoor education program in 1948; and racial integration
and the inclusion of children with disabilities beginning in 1954.
I hope you enjoy the series of “then and now” photographs in this
Annual Report, including these two snapshots, taken during my first
summer as a camper back in 1967 and with fellow alumni at our
recent 75th anniversary reunion weekend. As you will see, the images
throughout these pages tie our honored past to our vibrant present,
and I thank you for being part of our story as we look toward the

A Typical Day at Sherwood Forest Camp
7:30 a.m. Rise and Shine!

of options, which include swimming,
archery, outdoor cooking, climbing the
Tango Tower, participating in Book
Club, or independently reading at the
camp library. Depending on the artists-
in-residence visiting camp, as well as
the individual talents and expertise of
summer staff members, campers can
also participate in dancing, drama,
puppet-making, and other creative and
performing arts activities.

the Flag, to a camper-run carnival complete with games, prizes, and snacks. Once each session, our
campers also produce a play complete with costumes, lighting, sound, and a fully-designed set.

Our Outcomes and Impact
of Sherwood Forest campers reported that they learned or improved at least one skill through their participation in our summer programs. 96%
of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade campers reported that they looked forward to learning new activities as a result of their time at camp. 88%
of Leadership Training campers reported that they became more responsible for their actions through participation in Sherwood Forest programs. 88%
of Leadership Training campers reported that by participating in our camp programs, they were better equipped to help their group be successful. 92%
of Leadership Training campers expressed a positive attitude toward the community service work they participated in during the summer.100%
of campers in our innovative Reading Program demonstrated increases in vocabulary knowledge through their participation in the program.75%

Celebrating 75 Years!
We commemorated our special anniversary through several events in 2012. In July, dozens of friends of
Sherwood Forest Camp gathered in Forest Park to share fond memories and delicious ice cream sundaes. As
you may know, two decades before camp was officially founded, a group of volunteers gave ice cream to inner-
city kids in Forest Park one Sunday each summer. They came to realize that a full residential camp experience
would be much more valuable for those children, and their Ice Cream Sunday tradition developed into the
summer camp we know today. Our mid-summer celebration was a nod to these humble beginnings in Forest
Park.
In the late summer, a small group of staff and alumni toured the former site of Sherwood Forest Camp located
in Cuivre River State Park in Troy, Missouri. Executive Director Mary Rogers, Site Manager Gary Chastain, and
board members David Pocost and Ed Becker, returned to Cuivre River a few weeks thereafter to officially
present a book of original camp blueprints and drawings, dating back to 1937, to the Park Director. The
historical book now has a permanent home in the Cuivre River State Park archives.And finally, in September of 2012, former and current campers, counselors, staff members, and their families
reunited at our campsite in Lesterville for the culmination of our anniversary celebration, pictured above. The
weekend brought with it much nostalgia as members of the Sherwood Forest Camp family participated in their
favorite camp activities, including the Tango Tower, archery, and arts and crafts. Even more camp memories
were made as folks enjoyed campfires, s’mores, sing-alongs, and stargazing!
