Annual Report & Letter to Parishioners 2014-2015 Building Campaign Update Well over six years into my pastorate here at St. Marks University Parish, I can say that I have gained valuable experience as both a leader and mentor to young adults. As you know, we have a rather unique parish in that the majority of people who pass through the doors of our church are young and here temporarily, perhaps four to five years at most, leading to constant change and turnover. Still, I find that working with young people has been one of the more extraordinary experiences of my priestly life. Here at St. Marks, we can literally and figuratively change lives and bring young adults a sense of peace and confidence about their holy Catholic faith as they encounter many different secular viewpoints at a public university such as UCSB. The major project of our parish these past two years – a 2M fundraising effort to provide an overall renewal to our building along with the addition of a modest hall and kitchen – is now well over half-way completed. (In this newsletter, our campaign chair Richard Danduran provides us with some of the details of our progress.) I say half-way,because at this point, we have raised well over half of the necessary funds. Earlier this year we received initial approvals for our project from both the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the County of Santa Barbara Board of Architectural Review. As this newsletter goes to print, we are preparing for our formal plan review with the Archdiocese. We still have a ways to go with our fundraising and final plans, but this is perhaps expected in a parish that has - as a majority of her parishioners - students. I want to thank all of those who have made a pledge large or small to our Casting the Light of Faithcapital campaign and for all of those who have made St. Marks a true home-away-from home for our student and family community. —Fr. Well over six years into my pastorate here at St. Mark’s

University Parish, I can say that I have gained valuable

experience as both a leader and mentor to young adults. As you

know, we have a rather unique parish in that the majority of

people who pass through the doors of our church are young and

here temporarily, perhaps four to five years at most, leading to

constant change and turnover. Still, I find that working with

young people has been one of the more extraordinary

experiences of my priestly life. Here at St. Mark’s, we can

literally and figuratively change lives and bring young adults a

sense of peace and confidence about their holy Catholic faith as they encounter many

different secular viewpoints at a public university such as UCSB.

The major project of our parish these past two years – a 2M fundraising effort to

provide an overall renewal to our building along with the addition of a modest hall

and kitchen – is now well over half-way completed. (In this newsletter, our campaign

chair Richard Danduran provides us with some of the details of our progress.) I say

“half-way,” because at this point, we have raised well over half of the necessary

funds. Earlier this year we received initial approvals for our project from both the

Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the County of Santa Barbara Board of Architectural

Review. As this newsletter goes to print, we are preparing for our formal plan review

with the Archdiocese. We still have a ways to go with our fundraising and final

plans, but this is perhaps expected in a parish that has - as a majority of her

parishioners - students. I want to thank all of those who have made a pledge large or

small to our “Casting the Light of Faith” capital campaign and for all of those who

Hello, my name is Jorge R. Castaneda and I am an Econ-Math undergraduate student at UCSB. I am also the Chair of St. Mark’s Finance Council and I would like to give you an update on the parish finances for the year ending June 2015.

70% of our parish revenue comes from our weekly envelopes, cash, sacramental and special collections. Both the percentage and the amount are unchanged from last year. We receive about 30% of our funds through the Together in Mission collection as a direct recipient of the program funds. Last year, we disclosed that our subsidy from the Together in Mission has been slowly decreasing over time and this continued this year with a six percent decrease. So, overall our 2015 parish revenue decreased slightly compared to 2014. Aware of this slightly negative trend, steps were taken to limit our operational expenses. In this past year we have achieved reductions in the following: insurances, office expenses, rectory expenses, utilities and communication, repairs and maintenance, and property taxes. Nonetheless, even with the reduction of these expenses, our ministry expenses and salaries/benefits grew at a greater rate and our total expenses increased. Accordingly, with little change in revenue and an increase in overall expenses our parish had a slight loss for the year. Our main priority in the years to come will be to further evaluate our operating expenses, while finding creative ways to grow our operating revenue. The Finance Council will continue to work with Father Love to ensure our financial stability in 2016 and beyond.

I want to take this opportunity to share some news about our capital campaign, Casting the Light of Faith. As most of you know, elements of our original plans were rejected by the County of Santa Barbara Board of Architectural Review. Our architectural team has made the changes the County of Santa Barbara requested, and our project is now approved for working plans. I hope you all had a chance to take a look at the new drawings displayed in the church. They are beautiful. Along with the county's approval we need to secure the Archdiocesan Construction Department's final approval our project. Over the last year, our Building Committee has been meeting with officials, and they feel we have a very solid project. We will go for final approval in early February, 2016 and are confident that the project will meet the approvals of both the County of Santa Barbara and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. That brings us to fundraising. As Fr. Love mentions in his letter, we are more than halfway to our goal with $1.2 million in cash and pledges. We cannot express our gratitude enough to the people inside and outside the parish who have made contributions to this project. Our fundraising efforts continue with plans for two or three more fundraising events to attract major gifts. The first event is scheduled for February, 2016. I'm very confident that we will get approval from the County of Santa Barbara and from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. I also feel confident that with your help we will finish up our fundraising efforts and be able to put this project out for bid by late 2016. Thank you and may God richly bless you, Richard Danduran
