Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of The Lord April 21, 2019

In an Easter homily, the 4th century bishop St. John Chrysostom said, “O, Death, where is your sting? O hell, where is your victory? Christ is risen, and you are overthrown. Christ is risen, and the demons are fallen. Christ is risen, and the angels rejoice. Christ is risen, and life reigns. Christ is risen, and not one dead remains in the grave. For Christ, being risen from the dead, is become the fruits of those who have fallen asleep. To Christ be glory and dominion unto ages of ages.” Indeed, we rejoice this glorious day in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Passion

did not destroy him. The Cross did not conquer him. The tomb did not enclose him, forever taking Jesus from our sight. All that has been overthrown. Now, it makes sense to receive Baptism and share in Christ’s Death and Resurrection. Now, it is proper to share the Eucharistic meal so that the memory of this triumph never slips from our minds. Now, the tears and sadness of a funeral never overwhelm us or paralyze us in dread. Now, the funeral Mass is an occasion of hope with prayers offered in tranquil joy. Now, we conquer - with Christ. Now, we win. Rejoice, then, on this day and let this victory carry you through the travails of human life, knowing that when life on Earth ends it begins anew in the Kingdom. Christ promised that and the Resurrection fulfills that promise. I am grateful to all who worked long and hard to celebrate well the beautiful liturgies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil, and today’s Masses. We at St. Mark’s are blessed to receive the benefits of your skills, talents, and dedication. You make our praise of God superb. I am grateful, too, now that Lent has ended, for the many volunteers who made our Fish Fries a first-rate experience. Visitors told me of their favorable impression of your friendliness and hospitality while they enjoyed delicious food. Thanks much for all you did. Registered parishioners will soon receive my letter concerning the Annual Catholic Appeal. Please prayerfully consider your donation. Christ’s victory ignites appreciation within us. The Annual Catholic Appeal, which helps so many people, is a great way to express our appreciation. May the goodness and power of the Resurrection remain always with you. May God’s blessing be bountiful.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Over the centuries, the Church has demonstrated a wonderful ability to adopt a culture’s favorite symbols and customs and assign them new meaning. Easter eggs have a very ancient pedigree: nature’s perfect package, emblem of new life, dyed and decorated and given as gifts in ancient Egypt, Rome, China, and Persia. Just as the long hard winter is over, the egg bursts with promise of life and nourishment. Long ago, Christians came to see the egg not as a symbol of spring’s rebirth, but of ours, and as a sign of Christ’s tomb. A Polish legend says that Mary, in compassion for the soldiers at the cross, gave them eggs, but that her tears stained their shells with brilliant color. Legends have their origin in tales told around a hearth, but they often contain a profound truth. The idea of Mary, the first Christian, engaged in a merciful act of forgiveness and tenderness even in the shadow of the cross, describes the age-old wish that Christ “Easter in us.”

St. Mark’s St. Vincent de Paul wishes to thank our St. Mark parishioners for their generous support.

Since January, we received $7,887 from the Poor Box in the back of church. During this same time period, we served our neighbors in need and paid out $8,638 for electric and gas bills, rent, car repairs and gasoline, food vouchers, prescriptions and furniture, clothing and bedding vouchers from the SVDP Thrift Store.

With your continued donations and prayers, we are confident that St. Mark’s St. Vincent de Paul will continue to serve the needs of our neighbors in need.

Divine Mercy Sunday observance

Our Holy Hour begins at 2 pm.

The rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet prayed during the Holy Hour which ends at 2:55 pm.

Holy Mass at 3 pm, fulfilling our Sunday obligation.

Jesus told St. Faustina "I desire that the feast of mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of my tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of my mercy. The souls that will go to confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment." Pope John Paul II granted a plenary indulgence to those who pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet and participate in Divine Mercy Sunday by going to confession, receiving Holy Communion and praying for the intentions of the Holy Father.

Padre Pio and I

Adolpfo Affatato was a personal friend of the Saint Padre Pio. Adolfo’s wedding was the last Wedding Mass celebrated by the Saint and he was one of those in the room when Padre Pio died. On his first trip to the United Sates, Adolfo is coming to St. Louis to speak on “Padre
