2019-2020
ANNUALREPORT
Dear Donors, Members and Friends of Assistance League of St. Louis, Despite the interference of a pandemic, our members were able to accomplish many of our goals in 2019- 2020. With your support, we touched the lives of over 34,100 children and adults across the region. We are proud of our 471 all-volunteer members and friends, who volunteered 65,290 hours —the equivalent of 31 full time paid staff. We carefully evaluated the effectiveness of our nine Philanthropic Programs and presented recommendations to the membership, who voted to reduce the number of philanthropic programs by three. Assistance League of St. Louis now has six programs :Operation School Bell, Steps to Success (providing new athletic shoes and socks to thousands of public school students), Books From Friends (book fairs and other activities provide books children can own), Project ROSE (clothing and personal care items are delivered to crisis shelters and agencies), Assistance League Outreach (supporting critical needs of those facing crises) and My Own Fun Stuff (kits providing calming activities that comfort children and adults in stressful situations). In 2019-2020, Operation School Bell provided school uniforms and 22 other clothing and personal care items to 6,690 elementary students in 37 schools. This program has helped over 103,000 students since 1990. In 2019-2020, the total cost of items for OSB was $476,177. We also continue to serve 1,777 women and children in the six crisis shelters with clothing, hygiene products, and other necessary items. We were able to conduct several book fairs in elementary schools and provide special books to two Jennings School District Hope homes before the onset of COVID-19 . During the pandemic, we distributed 950 books to a food pantry and another 1,000 to the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis. Thanks to Assistance League and the many businesses and donors, aspiring young readers in St. Louis received a total of 13,000 books in 2019-2020.What an incredible year for our chapter as we exceeded our budgeted amount for grants by $48,750. We also exceeded our budgeted amount for Individual Donors by $12,800. Our Fall Fundraiser was a huge success exceeding our budgeted amount by $84,000. And then the pandemic hit. We closed down on March 17. We cancelled our second major fundraiser of the year, Authors Brunch, but our wonderful sponsors and membership allowed us to keep their sponsorships and reservation money. We had to close our upscale resale shop Fantastic Finds , which provides a third of our income for more than two months, before opening on June 9. Our thanks go to The Desco Group for providing a store front at no charge for 90 days to accommodate a donation center for Fantastic Finds. The year was a fun and a wonderful experience. We have developed new delivery models and backup options for all of our programs. We are ready for the changing environment and look forward to continue to serve the St. Louis area. Thanks for your support. Without you, Assistance League would not be able to help the thousands of St. Louisans who need our help now more than ever. Sincerely,
Jane Harbron, President 2019-2020

be embraced as a result of their needs being met through the
OSB program. —Shenandoah

schools. Operation School Bell® has served over 103,690 students since its inception.

A woman shopping at Fantastic Finds told me that she had been looking for a glass chess set for many years to replace the
broken one that she and her deceased father played on when she was a child. She was in tears as she recalled fond memories
of her childhood playing with her dad on the glass chess set. — A Fantastic Finds Volunteer
