Annual Report

In 2017, Write Around Portland began work on our 2017-2020 Strategic Plan. We

• completed an inventory of our organization’s technology needs; • upgradedandsecuredourfilemanagementsystem; • created and began implementing a three-year development plan to complement our

strategic goals; • participated in trainings to increase cultural awareness, skills in marketing and

professional development; • and collected demographic information about more people in our community than ever

before to support our equity and inclusion efforts.

In addition to these investments in our essential supports, we also continued offering our acclaimed programming. We

• held our writing workshops throughout the Metro in the places where people live, go to school and receive services;

• held more than 25% of our workshops with new partners or populations; • published the stories and voices of workshop participants; • and held community readings to connect writers and readers.

I’m looking forward to building on these successes and continuing to make progress on our 2017-2020 Strategic Plan including goals to: build on our equity and inclusion work by completing a racial equity self-assessment; increase our reach, visibility and connections throughout the Metro; and develop risk management plans to ensure long-term sustainability.

These goals support our vision to bring creative writing workshops to individuals who often have the least access; elevate under-represented voices in our community; and build authentic connections among people from various backgrounds. As one of our writing workshop participants shared:

K.C. Rodgers participated in our workshop at Albertina Kerr in Hillsboro for young people with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges. K.C.’s piece, José, was published in our spring 2017 anthology, Illuminated by the Words / Iluminados por las palabras.

K.C. shared, “I didn’t know what it was going to feel like to have my writing in some kind of published book, and then when I looked at it, I’m like, ‘That’s my writing,’ and I felt honored.”

2017 At a Glance

WRITING WORkShOPS We held 40 free creative writing workshops for 445 adults and youth. Workshops met for ten weeks and were held in partnership with the agencies listed to the right. We also held ten workshops for returning writers and 14 one-time workshops adapted to meet the needs of the populations served by the agency partner.

We offered fee-based writing workshops to those who wanted to experience our acclaimed generative workshop model and support participants who might not otherwise have access to writing in community: four ten-week Prompt workshops at Powell’s City of Books, 20 drop-in workshops hosted by HOTLIPS Pizza and one workshop facilitated by a local author. 232 people participated in these workshops.

We also held two writing workshops for Beaverton Arts Commission to support artists in creating their own artist statements. We continue to offer workshops in workplaces to meet the needs and goals of employers including team-building, creative brainstorming, staff self-careandusingwritinginleadershipandmanagement.Feesfromtheseworkshopssupportourworkshops for participants who might not otherwise have access to writing in community.

COMMUNITY REadINGSWe held four, free public readings and nine smaller readings with more than 660 people in attendance.

vOlUNTEERS255 people volunteered 5,693 hours. 56 volunteers facilitated writing workshops throughout the Metro and 19 completed our 27-hour workshop facilitator training.

aNNUal EvENT150 guests raised their pen to the power of writing and contributed more than $69,000 to support our writing workshops. Shari, the writer featured at Raise Your Pen, told us, “My pen is my voice. My page is the megaphone.” She reminded us that writing in community really does change lives.
