School Report
Report of the Superintendent of Schools
To the School Board and Citizens of Bartlett:
—
I have the honor and pleasure to submit for your
consideration my annual report of the condition of
your schools.
The regular work as provided in the State Programof school work has been carried on in the usual waywith more or less emphasis on special subjects where
needed. The following teachers are now at work in
your schools
:
Helen M. Conner, Glen, 32 pupils
Lucelle Schofield, Intervale, 18 pupils
Sarah Mower, Goodrich Falls, 10 pupils
The attendance has been satisfactory, and no
outbreak of sickness has broken into the work of the
schools.
The school house at Glen is too small to accom-
modate the number now attending this school, and I
recommend that an addition be built on this building.
The pupils are so crowded that no floor space is left
for classes.
You will see by the financial report that the condi-
tion of the district is satisfactory. All of the bills of
last year were paid and a balance of $311.91 was left.
The State is now contributing a good share of the ex-
pense, and no extra money need be appropriated, ex-
cept what is requested by law, and enough to make the
suggested improvement at Glen.
Respectfully,
L. M. FELCH,Superintendent of Schools.

Report of the Superintendent of Schools
To the School Board and Citizens of Bartlett:
It is a pleasure to submit my annual report of the
condition of your schools. Real progress has been
made. There are now 171 pupils in your schools. In
1918 there were but 89; that is, the school population
has nearly doubled. In 1918 you had three teachers.
You now have six teachers, with a high school
approved by the Department of Education as an "A*high school with a full four-year course of study. Youhave a nice house, well equipped, and the school is nowfitting the pupils to enter higher institutions of learn-
ing. Since your schools are growing and prospering,
your town must also be growing. This improvementin educational advantages has cost you some money, but it is money invested, not expended, and no towncan boast of better returns for the amount invested.
The following is the list of teachers, schools, andnumber of pupils in each
:
William Hounsell, Principal, High School, 38
Dorothy Shand, Assistant, High School,
Mrs. Marion Junkins, Grades 7 and 8, 33
Ida M. Watson, Grades 5 and 6, 30
29
Ida McKeen, Grades 3 and 4, 34
Dorothy Warren, Grades 1 and 2, 36
Total, 171
Good work is being done in all your schools. At-
tention is being given to the teaching of thrift, and
22 pupils have already started savings bank accounts.
This is valuable in training the young to discriminate
in values, and think before spending money that maybring little or no value to them.
Daily drills in physical exercises are having a
marked effect in producing strong bodies and vigor-
ous minds.
REPAIRS AND IMPROVEMENTSYour attention must be called to the heating ap-
paratus in the elementary school. The furnaces are; n bad shape. Because of difficulty in obtaining woodfor fuel, coal has been used. The furnaces have been
warped and burned through. Noxious gases andsmoke comes up through the heat pipes. This is a
source of danger to both pupils and to the building.
Steps should be taken at once to replace this heating
system. It would seem that the proper thing to do is
lo install steam, and I recommend that you seriously
consider this step. The steam boiler in the HighSchool building is giving excellent satisfaction, being
both economical and efficient.
There will be at least fifty pupils in the HighSchool next year. There are eighteen pupils in the
eighth grade, and most of them will probably merit
promotion into the High School. A room for science
will need to be finished in the basement, and this can
be done at small expense.
30
It must be a source of pride to all of the citizens
of Bartlett when you consider the growth of the town
and the schools. No longer need anyone hesitate to
locate here because of lack of good school opportunity
for the children. I heartily congratulate you all, on
your schools.
Respectfully,
L. M. FELCH,Superintendent.
