Annual Update for Higher National Qualifications
This report lists additions, revisions and withdrawals to SQAs portfolio of Higher National
Qualifications. It covers Higher National units, Higher National Certificates, Higher National
Diplomas and Professional Development Awards. The report is aimed at SQA Co-ordinators and
practitioners in SQA approved centres to assist with planning for the academic session by
providing:
information about the currency of units and Group Awards
early notification to staff delivering units that are being withdrawn
information to help raise staff awareness of new units and Group Awards in their specialist
areas.
The information in this report is also contained in the Catalogue of Higher National Qualifications.
The catalogue is updated regularly throughout the year and contains the most up-to-date
information about available HN provision. Further information about new and revised HN units,
Group Awards and PDAs can be found on the HN section of SQA’s website. The Unit Search
allows you to search for HN units by keyword, title or code.
The HN Notification of Changes to Unit Specifications and Frameworks is also updated regularly. It
shows:
a summary of changes to units that warrant a new version number
where a finish date has been removed or extended
framework changes
verification group changes
qualifications that have been withdrawn.
This report has four sections:

implementation in 2020-2021.
Section 2 New: a list of Higher National units developed for implementation in 2020-2021.
Section 3 Withdrawal: a list of Higher National Qualifications withdrawn from SQA’s Portfolio.
Section 4 Withdrawal: a list of Higher National units withdrawn from SQA’s Portfolio.

Glossary of Terms
Approval
This report includes information about the approval implications for new and revised Higher
National Group Awards and units.
‘Approval extended’ means that a qualification is replacing an existing qualification and there are
no significant changes that would affect a centre’s ability to deliver it. Where centres were
approved to offer the existing qualification, approval has been extended to them for the new one.
When approval for a qualification is ‘devolvable’ to centres, this refers to centres that have gained
devolved authority for approval. Colleges with devolved authority seeking approval for devolved,
non-automatically approved qualifications must complete a Devolved Authority Qualification
Approval Application Form and submit this to [email protected].
