The first Memorial Book was published after the First Crusade of 1096. It was a way for theJewish community to publicize and memorialize those who had died by the sword of thecrusading armies. Over the course of time, Jews have continued this tradition of committing thenames of loved ones in books so that individual communities can remember those who haveentered the realm of memory. The booklet that you hold in your hand is part of this tradition. Each name represents a holy spark of the Divine. Together they are a flame that continues tolight our way - our Ner Tamid – our eternal light. May God help us to keep the flame of oursacred memories burning brightly.

An eloquent poem by Yehuda Amichai speaks to our hearts at this moment:

Our angelsSpend much of their time sleeping. In their dreamsThey tear down the new houses by the sea,And build old onesIn their place.

No matter how long they may sleep,One hundred, two hundred yearsTen centuries is not too much. The first to wake upTakes the torch that has been handed down,Adds a drop of oil to the lamp,Blesses the eternal lightAnd then recalls the nameOf every other angel. And one by one as they are rememberedThey wake up.

For them, as for us,There is nothing more beautifulThan memory.

May we be inspired by the memories of our loved ones so that we may be encouragedto live better lives in the New Year. On behalf of the entire community, I extend mygratitude to community members who support this loving endeavor.
