50 years after the publication of Burgess’s disturbing little masterpiece, its portrait of a corrupt state, a bankrupt civil society, and a populace infear of feral youth seems urgently familiar. In a nation like this, howshould young people behave? There is, at least, much pleasure to behad in violence, drugs and debauchery.

Volcano’s exuberant production stays true to Burgess’s original in itscut-throat inventiveness and in asking whether it is better to be forcedto be good, or to be free to do evil. What’s it going to be then, eh?

Volcano’s startling version is short and viciously sharp. Desperatelybleak yet funny, horrific and uncomfortably attractive.
