INTRODUCTION TO BRAKES It is one of the most important device. Used to retard or stop the vehicle. Kinetic energy translated to heat energy. Kinetic energy increases with the square

of the velocity. By K.E=1/2mv²

TYPES OF BRAKES

Hydraulic brakes

Electric Brakes

Mechanical Brakes

INTRODUCTION TO ABS It is the safety innovation

introduced to the automotive industry.

It is a system that prevents wheel from locking while braking.

It is available as standard on almost all the new cars

History of ABS ABS was first developed for

AirCraft in 1929. By French Automobile & Aircraft

Pioneer GABRAEL VOISIN. The German Companies BOSCH

& Mercedes-Benz pioneered the first electronic version for use on Mercedes-Benz Cars in 1936.

In 1953 BMW became the World’s first motorcycle manufacturer to introduce ABS.

AIM OF ABS It is also known as Anti-Skid

Braking System.

The aim is to maximize braking while preventing the wheels from locking & skidding.

MAIN COMPONENT OF ABS

Some Wheel Speed Sensors Brake Calipers A Hydraulic Motor Some Pressure release

valves A quick thinking computer

(Control Module)

An ABS system consists of the following components:

WORKING PRINCIPLE OF ABS It consists of an

electronic controller. The electronic unit

constantly monitors the speed of the wheel.

TYPES OF ABS

Four-channel, Four Sensor

Three-Channel, Three sensors

One-Channel, one Sensor

EFFECTIVENESS In 2003 Australian study by

Monash University Accident Research Centre found that ABS:

Reduced the risk of multiple vehicle crashes by 18%.

BRAKING DISTANCE 80 KM/HR

ROAD CONDITION WITHOUT ABS WITH ABS

DRY PAVEMENT 45m 32m

SNOW 53m 64m

ICE 255m 404m

A june 1999 NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA) study found that:
