INTRODUCTION Depression is a widespread psychiatric disorder that effect several millions of the world population.

Recognized to be symptomatically, psychologically & biologically heterogeneous .

The disorder is characterized by change in mood, lack of interest in the surroundings, lack of motivation, feelings of gloominess,retardation of thinking and activity , sense of hopelessness , lack of physical energy and despair and suicidal ideation etc……..

Major depressive disorder is a disability condition that adversely affects a person’s family , work or school life , sleeping & eating habit& general health.

in the brain , oxidative stress and biochemical imbalance etc…….

Depression may treated with antidepressent medication , psychotherapy , self neglect ,etc………

Both synthetic drugs (imipramine & diazepam) and herbal drugs are used for antidepression treatments. in them herbal drugs are more preferable because of less side effects & wider safety margin .

Works have been done on several medicinal plants like citrus maxima

leaves , Artemisia absinthium , Passiflora foetida leaves etc……..
