So yes it is a very changed world, to pre March 2020, but we all have to accept position and work within the guidelines above. Bereavements

Mrs ANNE McDONALD WIDOW.

We were sadly advised by her daughter Alison, that Mrs McDonald passed away on 1st June, due to Infectious Endocarditis, caused by complications after Heart Valve Surgery in March this year.

Alison said that her mother was a widowed ANZROC member, and one of her closest friends was Betty Barton who passed away last year.

Alison’s father was Barry McDonald, retired (1984) ANZ Bank Manager who also passed away in 2001.

Our sincere condolences to Alison, and family.

DAVID SMITH

We were sadly advised by our member Noel Pratt that David Smith died on 4/6/20 after a battle with cancer over the past few years. David was not a member of ANZROC but worked for ANZ for approx. 15 years, leaving in 1981. Noel stated that David and Liz and family moved to Wollongong and David obtained a position with a family owned Transport Company as General Manager, where he worked until the business was sold approx. 12 years ago. He then retired. Noel worked with David in Lismore in 1977/78 and found him to be a very astute banker, with a very sharp sense of humour. They have been great mates ever since.

David had a lot of good mates in the Bank.

Sincere condolences to David’s family in this very sad time

Welfare Report Ken Dighton – Welfare Officer Report for June 2020 Sick List:

Barry Thompson – Barry had a 3-week spell in hospital with broken ribs (plus some complications) after a fall at home – this unsettled him somewhat, but he is now back at home recovering. Best wishes Barry.

Eric Myatt – Eric also had a fall at home, and went off to hospital. While there he had a cardiac episode, which resulted in his having a stent inserted. He’s at home now and recovering well – keep it up Eric.

Maureen Davis – according to Alf McDermott, Maureen is still rehabilitating in the nursing home, but “she is coming good”. Best wishes Maureen.

Jim Corrigan – life remains tough for Jim. Earlier this year his Southern Highlands care facility was evacuated because of the bush fires, and then the Covid19 virus hit. Wife Carol is currently allowed a weekly visit, and of course this stirs Jim’s desire to go home. Hang-in there James Patrick! – Best wishes from your mates at the ROC.

We wish all these members, and for that matter any others who are not in the best of health at present, happy days ahead. I made contact with the following people, who enjoy the esteemed title of Honorary Member, to check up on them in this, their birthday month and to extend good wishes for the year ahead:

Peter Bradford (89) – Peter has, like the bulk of the population, been keeping a low profile due to health regulations. However, for his birthday he had a very enjoyable family lunch, which included his four daughters. He said he is OK, and gearing-up for his milestone next year.

Bob Garrett (85) – Bob is fine and he seemed to be in good spirits. Unfortunately, wife Wendy’s mobility has been dealt a blow with a broken hip, which of course required hospitalisation. Bob said he has become quite domesticated, but is still learning the art. He passed his driver licence test so his independence is still intact.

John Cairns (84) – John said he is going alright, in fact quite well despite a couple of ups-and-downs over the past year. Wife Jan and he walk each day to keep the joints supple, and they have used the Covid19 shutdown to take short car trips around some of the beautiful spots of the harbour city – places which they’ve tended to overlook when life was normal.

Jim Pearson (88) – Jim is negotiating a bit of a rough road at present on the health front, but he said he is alright on the whole. He enjoys getting out and wandering down to the shops.

John Freedman (85) – John is ensuring his head is below the parapets with Covid19 circulating, but he is keeping well (also he is in really good hands with Wendy around the place). He was expecting to be joined by his brothers for lunch when I called him.

Keith Anderson (83) – I received an email from Keith: “Joan and I are both enjoying life and coping well with most things. We enjoy gardening and home maintenance. Scrabble, Netflix and U-Tube are our passion at the moment. Enjoyed my birthday, but not the number thing. My grandson Jack (7 Yrs.) asked me how many months old I was, never been asked that before. Joan worked it out 996 mths. with 1000 mths. due in October, whew! On that note I will close my news blog. Wish everyone out there all the very best”. Will you have a celebratory drink at 1000 months Keith?

Col Bartrim (83) – Col said his health is good, and he is still playing a regular set or two (in fact 3 on the day I phoned) of tennis. With the idea of saving himself he is celebrating his birthday only every 5 years!

Ivan Debalak (82) – At date of going to press I hadn’t heard from Ivan. We hope you had an enjoyable day on the 24th Ivan, and trust you will have good health and happy days in the year ahead.

Alf McDermott (87) – Alf recently received “a clean bill of health” from his medico. However, he is awaiting a time slot to have a tooth extracted – not that he is rushing, but simply wants it over and done with. He was pleased to be able to get his driver licence renewed for another year. Well done Alf, you’re a marvel.

Bob Grant (the Canberra one) – Bob said since last birthday he and Maureen moved into a retirement village because their previous residence was becoming difficult to maintain. No sooner had they moved than they both had to separately spend some time in hospital. I gather they have both recovered well. They now live in the same suburb as their son (rather than on the other side of Canberra), which

makes the task of calling for some help with jobs around the place much easier! Bob said he spent several interesting years in the Commonwealth Public Service after finishing with ANZ. However, he values his old ANZ friendships.

Last month I mentioned that I was unable to make contact with John Le Gras. Well, I received a nice email from him earlier this month: “Always great to follow the news! Thanks for trying to get in touch. We decided to move some months ago to a self-care retirement Village and this was completed mid-March of all times (just when Covid19 restrictions were kicking-in). Managed a single candle birthday cake which unfortunately the grandchildren could not help to blow out as they participated via Skype. Quite a different world. As for health, I have slowed up quite a lot with restrictions we have had to live with – like everyone else”. Thanks John, and best of luck settling into your new abode.

Very sad to hear about Barry Wileman as have known him since the 60’s from International Dept at S(M &G). A very genuine guy and a talented sportsman that suffered with health for many years but suffered in silence. Consider it a privilege to have been his friend. Now in peace. Karl Mizens

Committee Member Ken Byatt has sent the above photos with the comment below: With 2020 being the year to celebrate 50 years of mergers, Sue and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary last Saturday, the 23rd. Just the 2 of us at this stage, but hope to be able to get the 2 boys and families together in the not too distant future for some thing more "elaborate" than the take-away dinner for 2 we had, although it was from a good local restaurant. We had planned to be in the States with our daughter and family for the event, but Mr CV19 had other plans. The colour one was taken on 13 March last at Cape Byron while on our way to Brisbane for a friend's 70th. (We were able to get back before Queensland shut the borders). At the time of our wedding I was on Metropolitan relieving staff, and had just finished a 4 week relief at 601 Dean Street Albury as the Esanda clerk. A very interesting time. Members that is it for our June newsletter, and we will certainly update members, once responses are received in regards to monthly luncheons, as detailed earlier in NL. Please look after yourself & stay safe.
