Mix ground material thoroughly and store in re frig era tor (2  –6°C) in tightly sealed container un ti l analysis. Clean vol atile oil trap by soaking overnight in liquid glassware cleaner solution, C(d). Rinse with tap water. Check cleanliness of trap by adding small volume of distilled water. Water should flow down th e wall of trap smoothly. Oth erwise, re peat clean ing  procedure. Before re moving test portion for analysis, mix ground material in container by rotating, to avoid stratification. Allow test sam  ple to equilibrate to am  bient tem  perature. Weigh test por tion as spec ified in Ta  ble 962.17. Quantitatively transfer test portion to 2 L Erlenmeyer flask. Add ca 1200 mL H 2 O or  NaCl solution, C(b), (  see Ta  ble 962.17 for distillation solvent) and add 2–3 drops of antifoam. In sert stirring bar. Before plac ing volatile oil trap on flask, ensure that trap is clean. Place trap on flask using small amount of non-volatile stop cock grease on ground joint s. Fill col lection arms with H 2 O or NaCl solution as specified in Ta  ble 962.17. {  Note: For allspice, anise, and cloves add trap additive to graduated por tion (  see Ta  ble 962.17). Add 2 mL xylene using 5 mL pipet and verify added volume using volatile oil trap cali  bration [  see B(a)]. Re  peat analy sis if part of xylene passes back into flask during distillation.} Connect trap to con denser using small amount of nonvolatile stopcock grease and connect condenser to re friger ated circulat ing bath set at 20°C. In sulate neck of trap and flask with insulating tape. Heat flask on stirring hot plate with constant stirring. Ad  just trap and con denser so that drops flow down the wall of trap and d o not drop directly on surface of liquid. Gently swirl flask several times during initial heating until test portion is at rolling boil to eliminate scorching of test portion on walls. Maintain re flux rate of 5–15 drops/10 s. Distill 8 h or until 2 con secutive readings taken at 1 h intervals show no change of oil volume in trap. If separation of oil is not satisfactory, add 1–2 drops of dishwashing liq uid to trap through condenser or 2–3 mL saturated NaCl solution. Cool to 20°C ei ther by al lowing trap to stand at am bient tem  per ature or by immersing in water bath. If trap is read at Figure 962.17.
