Divine Redeemer Lutheran Church and School IS growing. This year your school broke all previous enrollment records with the highest number of students in the his-tory of our congregation. In addition, your church continues to show positive net growth, for which we thank and praise our gracious Heavenly Father. Steady growth, of course, means we must always expand our minis-tries. That’s what I am going to address in this issue of Lifelines. First, I am excited to announce the cre-ation of three new ministries ready to launch---Caring Hearts (respite care for care givers); Grief-Share (for the bereaved); and Divorce-Care (for those working through the ending of their marriage.) These support groups will not only benefit our members, but will be a dynamic outreach to our Lake Coun-try community. Trained facilitators will be serving as the support groups’ moderators. Second, I would encourage you to check out our website: www.drlc.org. It is constantly changing and is a tremendous resource for you. For example, did you know that if you miss Sunday worship, you can download Pastor Kurt’s or my sermons? You can also check out our parish calendar for events, check the news, and see photos of past ac-tivities. Likewise, if you need forms, appli-cations, or other print items, they are easily attainable through our website. If you haven’t checked it out lately, I think you will be duly impressed. Third, and very important, is our continuing campaign, ABOVE AND BEYOND. I would like to say “thank you” to the many members of DR who have sacrificially and regularly contributed to our 3 million dollar campaign to eradicate our mortgage, and make substan-tial capital improvements to our campus. This will free up precious financial resources for increased mission and ministry support. A final event is being planned for 2014, which, God willing, should permit us in meeting those lofty goals. If you are unfamiliar with this campaign, or have not as yet made a pledge, please give me a call at the church of-fice. I’d love to give you more information and

encouragement. Fourth, I am looking forward to our Advent Wor-ship Series as we prepare for Christ-mas 2013. The se-ries is called, “The Bright Star of Bethlehem,” which will present interesting details about the little town where Jesus was born so long ago, and what Jesus, who is the Bright Star of Bethlehem, reveals to us even today. Many of your favorite Christ-mas hymns will be featured. Fifth, have you heard about the new emphasis our Good Book Store is taking? It has begun to feature “third world handcraft” items which are hand-made items from coun-tries around the world. Every time you make a purchase of one of these items, your mon-ey will be directly supporting Gospel mission efforts globally. It’s a real “win-win” as you purchase wonderful hand-made items from a variety of nations, and, at the same time, supporting the proclamation of Jesus Christ to those who have yet not heard. Finally, please do remember that Commitment Sunday is coming up this November 17th. At that time, I am asking all of our members to prayerfully consider a sacrificial pledge of time, talent, and treasure to support the many wonderful things happen-ing on our DR campus. Obviously, just like your home, costs of operations continue to rise. Without your support, we would be un-able to do many of the things which happen here on a day to day basis. I thank you in advance for your cheerful and loyal support. In the near future, you will be receiving your Annual Report for 2013. I would en-courage you to give it a good read. After you do so, take a few moments to thank God for all of His many blessings to our church, school, and our individual members. We have been and continue to be, richly blessed. May God continue to raise each of us up as His bold and courageous witnesses!

Making a difference in things eternal,Pastor Jeff

In September, the Outreach team got to-gether in order to plan out a variety activities for the purpose of reaching out to our com-munity with the hope of reaching the lost. It was an exciting evening as the team brain-stormed ideas that would allow members of DR a chance to get involved. Our prayer is that, as you make plans in the months ahead, you would plan to take part in at least one of the following. October: • Halloween Neighborhood Outreach card distribution.November: • Operation Christmas Child: ➢ Pack a shoebox for a child! ➢ Attend and participate in the Packing Event – Saturday, November 23.• Food Baskets: ➢ Donate food items, gift cards, and/or help pack and deliver baskets.• Seasonal Postcard Mailing (Thanksgiving/Advent/Christmas)to those who are new to our community.November/December:• Angel Tree Christmas Cards/Gift Cards for Seminary Students: ➢Support a seminary student by sending a Christmas card with a gift card. (Look for more information in this edition of Lifelines.) January:• Kosovo Reunion: ➢Join us on Sunday, January 19th – 10:30 AM in the Gym worship service as we celebrate the successes of the Kosovo families that God brought to us in 1998-99. ➢ Catch up with our friends at a small reception following the service.February:• Angel Tree for Shorehaven: ➢ Donate “Valentine’s” gifts for residents of Shorehaven.• Seasonal Postcard Mailing (Lent/Easter) to those who are new to our community.

• Passionate Believers Conference: ➢ February 22nd ➢ Help by serving as one of the Event Crew. (i.e. set up, take down, assisting visitors, etc.) ➢Plan on attending the conference as a participant.March:• Lake Country Community Fest: ➢Help man the booth throughout the day on March 29 at Kettle Moraine HS.• Mission University Evangelism Seminar: ➢ Saturday, March 15th. ➢ Plan to attend this one-day seminar on evangelism and outreach.April:• Community Serve Day: ➢Plan to join us as we offer a variety of ways for each of us to serve our community.• Care Packages for College Students: ➢ Help pack care packages for DR college students as they get ready for finals.May:• Annual Neighborhood Canvas: ➢ Join us as we hit the streets of one of our local neighborhoods to hand out information and extend an invitation .Summer:• Hartland Independence Day Outreach: ➢ Watch for information on how you may be able to take part in reaching out to those who attend the Hartland Independence Day Parade in July. Since this list is certainly not exhaustive when it comes to Outreach and Evangelism, our hope is that it offers something for every-one to get involved. As we continue to look for ways to connect with those around us while supporting one another, we would ask the Holy Spirit to set all our hearts ablaze so that we can’t help but spill over with the love of Jesus.

Saved to serve, Pastor Kurt

Missions and Outreach 5 Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, 6 who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God. 7 For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. 8 Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth. 3 John 5-8

See the birthplace of Christ in a whole new way this Ad-vent season with The Bright Star of Bethlehem weekly Advent series. Each week in this series written by Rev. Tim Runtsch, a recent visitor to Bethlehem, parishioners will learn more about the little town where Jesus was born so long ago, and what Jesus, who is the Bright Star of Bethlehem, reveals to us even today. • Jesus comes to Bethlehem to be born a star--the Star of Creation, and the ruler over heaven and earth. His pres-ence brings light to the world, which is his creation. • Jesus comes to Bethlehem to be the Star of Hope to a people long forsaken. • Jesus comes to Bethlehem to shine as the Star of Unity, bringing together a land and people long divided. • Jesus comes to Bethlehem to enlighten the world as the Star of Joy. Each service features his-torical information about the town of Bethlehem past and present as well as traditions surrounding the birth of Christ.

As was predicted, our last update has put us past the $1,000,000 mark! Predic-tions are interesting aren’t they? We hear them all the time; whether it’s about the weather, our favorite sports team, or even when the end of time will come. It can be easy to listen to those said predictions and get caught up in what some “experts” think about the given subject at hand. We may try to predict the future, but only God knows that. A seasoned Christian might say, “I don’t know my future, but I know who holds it.” One popular verse that speaks to that very topic is Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,

“plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” The success of Divine Redeemer depends on all of us to remain steadfast in our Christi-anity by proclaiming the one true faith and resting comfortably in knowing exactly who holds our future. Our current campaign total has reached the amount of $1,022,760.76. Thank you to all who have contributed to this amount and have in turn glorified God with your ac-tions. Enjoy this Thanksgiving season with all God has blessed your family with.

The Good Book Store Update Stop in and try our new coffee called BOOM. The flavor is Velvet Hammer. The first few Sundays of November we will have “sweet treats” to go along with the free coffee. Christmas items are starting to come in. We offer Gift Certificates which is a great idea for teachers. There are many “stocking stuffers” along with gifts for everyone else in your family and friends circle.

A classic Christmas picture book, One Wintry Night tells the story of a mountain

boy who is injured in a snowstorm and seeks refuge in a cabin. While he waits out the storm, the woman who lives there tells him the Christmas story BUT from the very beginning! In a magnificent blend of a contemporary setting with the history of God’s redeeming love, author Ruth Bell Graham created a wonderful and unique version of the Christmas story. Breathtak-ingly illustrated by renowned artist Richard Jesse Watson, One Wintry Night is the perfect gift for the young and the young-at-heart that will fascinate both those who have heard the Bible story many times and those who know only a few details. “Ruth Bell Graham has written the per-fect Christmas book . . . with imaginative, stunning pictures. It is a book children and adults will love. The story is tried and true, well-told, and important. I love this story and I love this book.” — Barbara Bush One Wintry Night is for sale the begin-ning November. Get your’s while they last. The play that will be performed at the Breakfast for the King will be based on the book, One Wintry Night. It’s a great oppor-tunity to tie the whole message together!

The word of the LORD came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah 1:4-5 Living Hope is one of the 8 missions that we have com-mitted to supporting this year. Living Hope International’s mission is to provide for the emotional, physical, educa-tional, and social needs of at-risk children, youth, and families, as well as to equip, support, and send leaders to provide similar services throughout the world. To ac-complish these goals, LHI receives financial and ser-vice support from individu-als, churches, businesses, and foundations throughout the United States and other countries such as Canada, England, France, Spain, South Korea, Ecuador, and Mexico. Recently, Chip Holmes (Vice-President of Living Hope) wrote this about Living Hope’s work in Mexico: Liv-ing Hope International is now in their 19th year and has res-cued over 400 children off the dangerous streets of Mexico. Esperanza Viva Youth Home in Puebla is currently caring for 100 children. A second orphanage was opened in 2006 in Matamoros, Mexico, just over the Brownsville, TX border. They currently have 25 children residing there. The love of Christ is shown

Men’s Retreat 2014Mark Your Calendars

The men of our congregation are invited to be a part of the 14th annual Men’s Retreat to be held at the Holiday Inn in Manitowoc on the weekend of February 28-March 2, 2014. Last year 157 men from 39 different congregations in the South and North Wisconsin Districts participated in the retreat. The men from First Immanuel in Cedarburg, Our Redeemer in Wauwatosa, and Divine Redeemer in Hart-land plan the retreat. The theme for this year’s retreat is, “gods at war.” It is based on a book with the same title and is written by Pastor Kyle Idleman. Most people living in today’s culture think the subject of idolatry is obsolete. We don’t know of anyone who kneels before golden statues or bows down to carved images. He points out in the book that there are god’s at war fighting for the throne of our hearts. Every-thing we do, every relationship we have, everything we hope for or dream of or wish to become depends on what god wins the war. Jesus makes it very clear what He expects from us as we live out our Christian faith in our everyday lives. He states in Matthew and Mark, “Love the Lord your God with ALL of your heart, with ALL of your soul, with ALL of your strength, and with ALL of your mind.” All of the sectionals on Saturday will deal with the modern day idols that are clashing for the throne of our hearts. Come to the 2014 retreat and learn once again to place Jesus as #1 in our lives. Any questions about the retreat contact Jim Berg at 414-462-5871. More details will come in the next month or so.

On December 14 and 15 our choirs and orchestra members will be performing their annual Christmas Concerts. In appreciation, we will be serving lunch for all concert participants between the per-formances. If you would like to donate food for the dinner, please contact Doris Egan at 262-367-8400, ext. 101 or [email protected]. Thank you! Sign up on the bulletin board in the cafeteria. There’s a list of items you could bring on the bulletin board.

It has to be obvious that a talented teacher will display many life skills needed to effectively teach the students of today. Skills such as excellent classroom man-agement, patience, organization, and cre-ativity are just a few. Time management must also prove to be a helpful skill when coordinating the demanding schedule of a teacher. One of Divine Redeemer Lu-theran School’s fourth grade teachers, Mrs. Jen Boris, must have a good sense

of time management. Mrs. Boris not only is responsible for teaching full-time, rais-ing her own grade school-aged children, and supporting her husband, Scott, but she also has been working towards her Masters in Educational Technology. Mrs. Boris stated, “I’ve always enjoyed technol-ogy and want it to be fun. I want to see what technology is capable of doing (in the classroom) and how can I incorporate it into my daily teaching.” Because of the

emphasis Divine Redeemer is placing on its 1:1 Initiative of putting iPads in the hands of students, she felt it would be a good idea to learn more about the benefits of teaching with technology and having someone else capable of assisting others who may need training in this area. Mrs. Boris’ masters course, offered through Concordia University, Mequon- Wisconsin, is an online course and requires about 10 -15 hours per week in re-view and assignments. She even completed courses several times during the summer months. Therefore, the hardest part of the course, according to Mrs. Boris, is organizing the workload. She feels challenged to continually be innovative in the classroom and to discover all the possibilities when applying technology to education. Currently her class is in instructional design and she has focused on Divine Redeemer’s Promethean Board software as her class project. Mrs. Boris’ next scheduled course will be Research in Educational Technology.

Divine Redeemer Lutheran School’s faculty, staff, and students are continually thankful for the many blessings received every school year. Terrific parent support, generous donations of needed technology, increased enroll-ment, continued quality volunteering, and so much more are just a few of these blessings. We are in gratitude to everyone that contributes to making Divine Redeemer Lutheran School a school that makes a difference in student and family lives! Miss Avery, Divine Redeemer’s talented departmentalized English teacher, asked her students what they were most thankful for. Here are a few of their responses…

I am for...

“I am thankful for my parents, my friends, and my family. I am also thankful for the roof over my head and food and drink to keep me alive. I am also thankful for clothes, shoes, and everything I need to stay warm and covered. I am especially thankful for being able to attend a Christian school where I can talk freely about God and being able to go to church.” (7th Grader, Christina Seese)

“I am extremely thankful for all of the blessings here at Divine Redeemer. The teachers and students both are very kind. The thing that I am most thankful for is the love of God that radiates through the entire school. I feel extremely blessed to attend Divine Redeemer Lutheran School.” (7th Grader, Abby Fickel)

“What I am thankful for in life is endless, but I’ll name some of them. I’m most thankful that God sent His only Son, Jesus, to save us from sin, death, and the devil. Another thing I ’m also thank-ful for is that I live a good life with everything I need. God provided me with a family that takes care of me. That is something that everyone should be thankful for.” (7th Grader, Kyle Kramer)

“I am thankful for a lot of things in life. Something I am thankful for is the Christian education I have. I am thankful for this Christian education because I get to learn about Jesus. I am also thankful for my family and friends because my family is really loving and caring. I am also thankful for all the amazing teachers I have and how they make school a lot more fun.” (7th Grader- Ansley Nicholson)

On Friday, October 11, Divine Redeemer Lutheran School invited the grandparents and special friends of its students for an afternoon of presentations, recognitions, and lasting memories. Earlier in the week, Divine Redeemer’s chapel families created family-friendly scarecrows to decorate the school campus in anticipation of this special fall event. Student choirs sang, grandparents were awarded for “special accomplishments,” classroom activities took place, and a reception was held to welcome everyone on this special day. This annual event is a favorite of grandparents and students alike, and special gifts were handmade by the students and given to their special visitors. A wonderful afternoon was experienced by everyone and though the hours went by quickly, the memories will last a lifetime!

Smiles Abound at Divine Redeemer Lutheran School’s Grandparent’s Day

Once again, Divine Redeemer held its annual Trunk-or-Treat and Chili Cook-off event on Saturday, October 19th. The parking lot was filled with excited children in family friendly costumes who went trick-or-treating from trunk to trunk! Members of Divine Redeemer Lutheran Church and School reached out to the community by decorating their own vehicles and handing out candy. Special awards were presented to the best decorated vehicle and to the best tasting chili recipe! Congratulations to the Eric & Tina Strickland family who won both the chili cook-off and the decorated car award this year! Thanks to everyone that helped out to make this event so successful!
