Pastor’s Letter June 30/July 1

Dear Parish Family, I took the picture on the cover of this week’s bulletin during our 2017 pilgrimage to the Holy Land. We were visiting the town of Magdala which is named for Mary Magdalene, who is clearly one of the women who was specially close to Jesus in the Gospels. There is a newly dedicated retreat center there called Duc in Altem. The name literally means Put Out Into the Deep and it celebrates the miracles of Jesus on the Sea of Galilee, such as the calming of the storm and walking with Peter on the water. It also celebrates the special relationship between Jesus and women in a beautiful and unique series of images. One of the most poignant images is of the cure of the woman suffering from a hemorrhage. At the center, in the detail shown here, we see the woman’s finger as she crawls through the crowd to only touch the fringe of Jesus’ garment. That touch is a spark of healing and both Jesus and the woman feel it intensely. She feels healing in her body. Jesus too feels that power has gone out from him and he turns to see who it is who has touched him. It is not something often preached about but I think it is interesting to note how many powerful scenes in the Gospel happen in a touch between Jesus and women who both loved

him and were loved by him. There is the woman who washes Jesus’ feet with her tears and the young girl lifted from her bed after the healing of the woman with the hemorrhage. There is the forgiveness of the woman at the well and the woman caught in adultery. The resurrection is revealed first to the women who come to wash the body of Jesus after his death. And though neither scene is actually described in the gospel, no description of this tender relationship would be complete without Michelangelo's Pieta and the image of Veronica washing the face of Jesus.

At Magdala there is a section of the retreat center called the Women's Atrium. There are eight pillars here, seven hold images of famous women of faith from New Testament and Hebrew Scriptures. The last pillar is empty and bears this inscription: – for women of all time who love God and live by faith. As we think and pray about healing this week, it is good for us to remember that something as simple as a touch can unfold the mystery of God’s love.

Touched and Healed

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Eucharistic Adoration

Become an Anchor of Prayer for Family Life The Catechism quotes Saint John Paul II: “The Church and the world have a great need for Eucharistic worship. Jesus awaits us in this sacrament of love. Let us not refuse the time to go to meet him in adoration, in contemplation full of faith, and open to making amends for the serious offenses and crimes of the world. Let our adoration never cease. Our parish will have an hour of Eucharistic Adoration following the noon mass on Fridays.

We would like to dedicate this hour as a time of contemplation and reflection to pray

especially for our families. For strength in family life, for the return of family members to

the church, for healing and reconciliation within families that are hurting.

Religious Education :: Catechists Wanted

We know and love the Catholic Faith because, over many years,

women and men have practiced the Faith and passed it on to us. We “pay it forward.”

We pass on the Faith by our attitudes and actions in many ways.

Serving as a catechist is a particular way of doing this.

By contacting Sister Cathy as soon as possible, you will receive teaching materials and information well in advance of the beginning of class.

What you need to be a catechist: ♦ an interest in teaching and the ability to work with young people ♦ time to teach for an hour on Sundays (10:30-11:30) or on Wednesdays (4:00-5:00 for

grades 1-6 and 7:00-8:00 for grades 7 and 8) plus time to prepare lessons and to set up for a few minutes before each class

♦ time to attend teacher meeting every 4-6 weeks What we will give you: ♦ an outline of what your students need to learn during the year ♦ student materials—textbooks and periodicals, and teacher guides ♦ support and information at teacher meetings, when we discuss what to teach and how

to teach it well What you will receive: ♦ the satisfaction of passing on the Faith, as generations have done for us ♦ the opportunity to work with other wonderful catechists ♦ enrichment of your own Faith. The way to really know and understand something is

to teach it. The questions your students ask and the questions that come to your own mind bring you to a deeper, more profound life of faith.

Religious Education [email protected]

We need women and men to serve as catechists this year for grade 1 on Sunday mornings 10:30-11:30,

for several grades on Wednesday afternoon 4:00-5:00 and possibly Wednesday evenings, 7:00-8:00.

If you are interested in being part of this important ministry or would like further information,

contact Sister Cathy Stare at [email protected].

The Diocese of Rockville Centre provides both information and support services in regard to the Life

issues, particularly in regard to crisis pregnancy, when abortion is being considered as the only way

out of a difficult situation. There is a diocesan outreach program, with a 24-hour confidential hotline,

be made to OPTIONLINE at 1-800-712-HELP(4347).

Sunday’s readings cover a lot of ground. In the first reading, Wisdom assures us that God did not create death.

More so, God does not even wish death upon us. God created us to live and thrive. Death is the result of

Satan’s envy. In the Gospel, we learn of two of Jesus’s healing miracles, reaffirming God’s will for us to live

and be well. But we know that living well means more than being physically well. St. Paul writes of living

well in the context of equality. He acknowledges that there are times when some may have more than others

and, therefore, should give from their abundance. He does not say anyone should give to the point of

becoming burdened him or herself. And he says that there may come a time when the tables are reversed and

the other might have more and be able to help the formerly fortunate. The bottom line is that we help each

other out as needed, that we maintain a balance, that we leave envy of the one with more and selfishness

toward the one with less to the devil, that we insure that life is livable for everyone without exception. And we

can make this real in our own homes, communities, country, and world in the areas of housing, employment,

education, health care, safety and security, and environmental protection. Let’s give it a try

Bereavement Support Group Announcement

Grief is one of the most commonly shared human experiences and can manifest itself in so many ways – physical, emotional and spiritual.

Being with others who are grieving can reaffirm that what one is experiencing is real and that there are others who can help us cope with our loss as we proceed on our journey of healing and renewed strength.

The Basilica of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary will be offering a Bereavement Support Group this summer for individuals who are interested in joining. We will be accepting up to 10 members.

Please contact Jeannine Schmidt at 631 283-0097 ext. 317 for further details. Membership will be first come first serve and the meetings will be held in the Chapel room of the Parish Offices on Saturdays from 10:00am-11:30 a.m. for 8 weeks beginning July 28th.
