2015-2016 St. Philip Program Theme

At the Session planning retreat in July the program year theme “Joyfully Growing and Moving with the Spirit” was chosen. This theme was generated through a book study that the session did together. The book is called “Sailboat Church: Helping Your Church Rethink its Mission and Practice” by Joan S. Gray. Through this book, we learned about how we may be a rowboat church instead of a sailboat church and that perhaps what will move us is to have the Spirit of God blow wind into the sails of St. Philip so that we may move where God wants us to move.

The program year begins August 23 on Kick off Sunday and the hope is that throughout the year special programs will be offered that will help us feel, sense and recognize the Spirit of God blowing us forward. Rev. Garis will focus his sermon on August 23 on this year’s theme.

Mo Celebration & Jr. High Jubilee A number of our youth attended Mo Celebration and Jr. High Jubilee. Below are some of the Youth’s impressions and expressions of gratitude from youth who attended Celebration. Thank you for your support in their camp experience. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Shane Scholarship,

I wanted to say thank you for sponsoring me to attend my first Mo Ranch experience. It was amazing. I was able to reconnect with some friends from when I attended Camp Gilmont, as well as learn how to experience God in a different way. I loved my small group, and met some new people that I call friends now. God is everywhere, and created everything, including this wonderful place, where I learned no matter what, God loves everyone all the time, and all the time God is good. It is truly a wonderful place to attend, and without the Shane Scholarship I would not have been able to. Thank you so much for choosing me and for all the help and love me and my family get from SPPC.

Thank you, Aaron Perez

Dear Shane Scholarship Committee,

Thank you so much for al-lowing me to go to Mo Ranch this year. I learned

so much this whole week and made so many new friends and new memories that I will cher-ish forever. I hope to be able to go back to Mo Ranch the rest of my time in high school .

Thank you again, Molly Hunter

Dear Shane Scholarship,

Thank you for helping me go to Mo Ranch. It was nice to be in a group of people you don’t know at first and then come together through this experience. I loved and enjoyed the experience immensely.

Just a Reminder…

Note of the Week………………

I noticed the last couple of Sundays as I led you in song from in front of the church that you, the congregation, sang with much “gusto”! I could tell you

loved the old familiar tunes—“I Danced in the Morning” and “Amazing Grace”! But, what impressed me was your willingness to try new tunes like “Let Us Build a House!” Our new hymn book is full of new tunes with great new texts, and you are responding well by trying to learn notes and listening to the new words! And, if you just can’t sing a note, please join us in spirit listening to God’s message. Thanks to you and our congregational singing, we make our worship experience richer and fuller! Keep up the good work for God’s glory. And speaking of music in our worship service, it is time for our musical groups to begin rehearsing again and a great time for anyone who wants to join any of our musical groups to come and experience our programs: The Chancel Choir sings an anthem every Sunday at the 11:00 a.m. worship service and rehearses on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. If you are a freshman in high school or older, you are eligible for this group. All parts are needed—soprano, alto, tenor or bass. The choir has been on vacation for the month of July. They began again on Wednesday, July 29th. If you prefer hand bells, the Hand Bell Choir meets Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. and plays seasonally for Christmas and Easter. If you have never played hand bells but think you might like to try, see me and I can explain what is involved (be able to count to 4 and know your left hand from your right)! This choir is for adults. They begin on September 20th. The Youth Chime Choir rehearses on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 (Youth group starts at 5:00.) They play in worship once a month from October through May. The ages for the Chime Choir are 6th grade through 12th grade. They will begin on September 13th. Please feel free to visit with me about any of the groups or call me at the church— 817-282-9181 if you have any questions about anything. I would love to see you in our music program! Get involved! We have the best job in the world—singing and ringing God’s praise!

See you in church on Sunday. Joyfully Singing in Christ, Pam Cochrane

The Regal Opera Chorale Is looking for “A FEW GOOD SINGERS”

Survey Results are in!

Thank you for participating in the St. Philip Survey. We had 86 responses. If you did not get a chance to take the survey never fear. The session has talked about doing follow up surveys in the future. Also, you can always feel free to share your thoughts with a session member or pastor. Our survey results are interesting and the committees are beginning to take a closer look to see what you all had to say. Below are a few of the graphs and charts to come out of that survey.

If you were to attend church, what time best fits your schedule?

When attending church, what are your favorite parts of attending? Please rank in order of importance.

When I go to church, I

We learned a lot about survey making and had a lot of data to sift through. There is much more data than what is above, including comments and suggestions. I hope that you find this information interesting. If you have any questions feel free to come and talk to me.

Peace of Christ, Rev. Alissa King

Welcome YaYa Back to School with a Care Package!

Starting last year St. Philip partnered with several other Presbyterian churches in North

and East Texas to bring a very bright and deserving young lady, Eulalia (YaYa) Velasquez,

from an orphanage in a troubled region of Mexico to the Presbyterian Pan American School

(PPAS) in Kingsville. YaYa is still working on her English conversation (speaking) but reads

very well. She went from B’s the first semester to the honor roll the second.

St. Philip will welcome her back to school for her sophomore year with a Care Package.

Here are some ideas of things to collect for YaYa to enjoy and share with her dorm friends:

"Thinking of You" cards signed by congregation or Youth, Microwave popcorn, gum, mints,

candy, raisins, nuts, crackers, instant hot chocolate packages, Frito Bean or Cheese dip, small

packages of Oreo's or Teddy Grahams (in cups), peanut butter crackers, Velveeta and shells

in individual cups, hand lotion, chap stick, cologne, Mexico phone cards, postage stamps,

note cards, and Betty Crocker Cookie Mix in a pouch. Please place these items in the basket

marked "YaYa's Care Package" on top of the N.E.E.D. collection box by the east door. We will

ship the Care Package to her on September 8.

Men’s Mission Day

August 22, 2015 9:00 am -12:00 noon

Well, I just finished my first year as a Young Adult Volunteer. I served in New Orleans

where I met and ministered to international seafarers with Global Maritime Ministries. That experi-ence was an amazing one that showed me some of the injustices in the cargo and shipping industries. Now that I am home, you may be asking what is next for Jennifer Hallberg. I am glad that you asked. In the middle of August, I will be starting a second year as a Young Adult Volunteer. This year I will be serving in Austin where I will be an advocate with Texas Impact. I will be speaking for those who are unable to speak for themselves with an interfaith organization. Texas Impact works at the state legislative level to speak on issues of Medicare, prison issues, immigration policies and other areas where the church needs to be speaking. My year will look different from last year. My area of service will not be on a personal level, but rather in an area where I can meet people who are trying to fix some of the injustices in the world. I am looking forward to learning how ministry is done through the legislative lens. I will be learning how faith and the desire to speak out for injustice can function at the state capitol.

For this second year, I will need to raise $3,000. I am asking the community of St Philip to help me with this goal. Your support last year was crucial to my year of service. As a community, I have felt your love and support during that service year and I am asking for it again. If you would like to donate toward my goal, there are two ways you can do so.

1. Write a check to St Philip Presbyterian Church. Please make sure to write “Jennifer Hallberg YAV” on the memo line.

2. Through visiting the St Philip website and clicking on the Online Giving Link.

Thank you, Jennifer Hallberg

Kimberly Stone

St. Philip said good bye to Kimberly Stone, our social media coordinator, at the end of July. The budget could no longer support her 10 hour a week position. Kimberly’s responsibilities included posting news of St. Philip on Facebook and Twitter and she also compiled and produced the slide show of TV announcements which were shone in the entryway of the church every Sunday morning. A mother of two beautiful girls Kimberly also sits as a member of St. Philip Preschool board of Directors. We will miss Kimberly, her creativity and her work. Thank you Kimberly for all your work with us. A member of the congregation has expressed interest in volunteering for this

position, but until that person is on board, you may help by sharing St. Philip posts on

your own Facebook timeline. This will give St. Philip more exposure to others.
