Last year we sponsored our machine minder, Chris Greensmith’s daughter Samantha in the Nottingham Race for Life in aid of Cancer Research. The charity event took place on the Trent Embankment with 16 year old Samantha raising £200 pounds for the organisation.

Samantha took part with her Grandmother who does the race every year and has had cancer herself; they were joined by her Grandmother’s friend Lynn on the 5K event, along with 3,500 other entrants.

It was a particularly proud day for Samantha’s parents Chris and Amanda as their daughter had never undertaken a walk of this distance before, having been born with Achondroplasia Dwarfism as well as related medical conditions.

“We were very surprised when Sammi said she wanted to take part as she just cannot walk long distances. Having witnessed how she has coped with all that she has had to deal with over the years, it was a great lift to us, as her parents, to see her do this walk and she had to do the last 1.5k without her trainers as she had a large blister on her foot. She was so tired when she’d finished; when she does something like this it makes us very proud to say she’s our daughter.”

After a well deserved holiday in Florida with her family, Samantha started a childcare and development course at South Nottingham College. We wish her well in her studies.

Electronic InvoicingIn December we sent letters out to all customers with a proposal to issue invoices and statements via email from February 2011. This decision supports our efforts to ensure we minimise the impact our business activities have on the environment in accordance with the ISO 14001 Environmental accreditation and the changeover will also assist us in our desire to become a carbon neutral company.

The proposal has been very well received by our customers with almost 100% take-up;

just one of our customers has asked us to delay for the time being as they have just been bought out and they will be reviewing all their systems.

This change in policy reduces the amount of paper used in our office by approximately 1,000 sheets a year and although it might not seem a lot – imagine what could be achieved if every company opted for this method. Every little helps.

Environmental IssuesPlanting TreesWe are now in our fifth year of tree planting through the Tree Appeal organisation and we have recently calculated how much waste we had produced over the last 12 months. Some of you may remember our pledge to off-set the amount of waste we produce - as a by-product of our day to day business activities - with having trees planted in managed forests and woodland throughout the East Midlands. For each tonne of waste we pay for one tree to be planted. The figures for this year are;

Trees planted = 17

Tonnes of waste = 171

fc cartons written about in a case studyWe were recently approached by Smurfit Kappa Recycling UK to be the subject of a case study for them to use for promotional purposes. We gladly agreed to feature and the article below will be used by the company to promote their recycling services. We use our local branch in Nottingham for all our board waste as they too are an ISO 14001 accredited company. We chose Smurfit Kappa because of their commitment to sustainable forestry and their aims for reducing their own carbon footprint.

FC Cartons Develops Closed Loop Recycling of Packaging Waste with Smurfit Kappa Recycling

FC Cartons, the UK’s leading provider of gluing, folding and window patching services to the carton, print and packaging industries is returning hundreds of tonnes of waste to the packaging chain every year with the help of paper and cardboard recycler Smurfit Kappa Recycling.

As an ISO 14001 registered company that takes the environmental impact of its operations very seriously, FC Cartons has always been keen to ensure any waste board is returned to the UK’s paper packaging chain. Ever since it began working with Smurfit Kappa Recycling, FC Cartons has been impressed with its extremely reliable and flexible collection service that accommodates the fluctuations in its production cycles. Waste board collections can vary from two per month to two or more every week.

“Smurfit Kappa Recycling has always met our requirements, despite the fact that our waste collection demands constantly change due to the seasonal nature of our business. I would happily recommend the company to any other business,” said Debra Woodyatt, quality manager and director at FC Cartons. “It’s a big positive for us and our customers to know that all our waste board is recycled at Smurfit Kappa’s UK mills and used in the manufacture of new packaging. The carbon emissions of transporting the waste locally are kept to an absolute minimum.”

FC Cartons has been working successfully with Smurfit Kappa Recycling for several years, in which time waste board volumes have steadily risen towards the hundreds of tonnes now recycled every year.

“Our strategy has always been to take the responsible approach to waste management,” said Debra Woodyatt. “We are only too well aware that the packaging industry faces criticism from the government, media and the public about the amount of packaging used by manufacturers. We are all very conscious of the impact our business activities have on the environment and want to ensure that we make every effort to minimise that impact. Smurfit Kappa Recycling is helping us to do that and I believe that both companies have a shared vision of and commitment to responsible waste management.”

Additional ways in which FC Cartons is seeking to further minimise environmental impact and carbon emissions include its encouragement of employees to car share or cycle to work, sourcing environmentally friendly cleaning products and for the last four years they have made a commitment to tree-planting through the Tree Appeal scheme. “For every tonne of waste we produce, we pay for one tree to be planted in forests and managed woodland throughout the East Midlands and we intend to continue to support the scheme” said Debra.

We recently supported a local Girl Guide - sixteen year old Bethan Mcknight of Castle Donington in her efforts to raise funds for a trip to the World Guide Centre in Pune. Bethan was selected, along with seven other Leicestershire Girl Guides to represent the County in this trip of a lifetime.

To raise money for the trip Bethan organised a number of events including car washes, a curry night, contacting local businesses and she even recorded her own CD entitled ‘Head over Heels’ – mostly songs she had written herself along with some cover versions. “I was delighted to receive £100 from fc cartons to help fund my trip. ”commented Bethan

The purpose of the trip was to learn more about the Indian culture and their religion and took in the sites of Mumbai, Agra, Jaipur and Delhi. During the time there the guides visited a number of health clinics and organisations involved with the care and education of disadvantaged children. Bethan also had the opportunity to visit the Taj Mahal and to ride on an elephant!

“This was an experience I will never forget and I was very grateful to David and Debra for helping to make it possible” said Bethan

Customer Satisfaction Survey 2010As a requirement of ISO 9001 Quality Management System we send out a customer satisfaction survey to all our customers on an annual basis and below are just some of the comments we had back. Although we are required to undertake this survey as an integral part of our ISO accreditation, we find it a genuinely useful exercise.

We open our doors to college students for the second year running

Last year we welcomed a second group of year eight Art, Design and Technology students from Castle Donington Community College. For the last two years running we have been asked to give the students a tour of our factory; showing how the palletised cartons arrive in to us and allowing them see the cartons being glued and folded on the machines.

We demonstrate a range of finished products to the students, giving them some facts and figures on the number of cartons we glue in a year and in particular, how many Easter egg cartons come through our factory as the title of their graphics project is ‘Easter Egg Boxes’.

The feedback we have had is that the students have found the visits very worthwhile and relish the opportunity of seeing the manufacturing processes involved in an item they are all very familiar with.

A baby girl for Machine Minder SamOur Machine Assistant Sam Hales and his wife Ann welcomed their second child, Maisie into the world on Saturday October 2nd last year. She weighed in at 6lbs 14oz having arrived two weeks early. Maisie is sister to the couple’s son Josh who is seven.
