Dear St Joseph’s Community,

Welcome to Week 4!! Thank you everyone who participated in the St Joseph’s Master Planning Survey that went out last term. This information, combined with our recent SRIP has provided us with some great feedback which we can now use to begin our Strategic Planning for the next four years. Our major priority over the coming months will be examining ways to develop/renovate our classrooms to ensure our learning spaces are modern, flexible, and cater for 21st century learners.

This week students in Years 3 and 5 have begun their NAPLAN testing. On Monday Year 3 students completed their writing tests (paper based) and the Year 5 students completed their writing test (online). The remainder of the tests are all online for both year levels, with students completing the reading test yesterday, the conventions of language test today, and lastly will complete the numeracy test tomorrow. Students have done a great job handling the NAPLAN test so far, and all has gone smoothly with the online test format!

Parent Portal

A reminder that last term each parent would have received a letter inviting them to join up to the Sentral Parent Portal, which will become our main source of communication to parents. Each letter contained a unique code and log in for each parent. If you have not received this letter, misplaced it, or need assistance in navigating the portal log in and the Sentral App, please do not hesitate to contact the school office. Volunteers A reminder that all our wonderful volunteers are required to complete a very short induction online. Volunteers will need to sign and complete a Volunteers Declaration Form to indicate they have completed the induction and understand their responsibilities. Thanks for your help and cooperation with this.

Winter Pie Drive!

Our wonderful PPF have organised a Pie Drive Fundraiser for St Joseph’s. Please see attached to this week’s newsletter email all the relevant information and how to order. From the APRE Congratulations to our Mary MacKillop award winners for the months of March and April. Our focus for March was to be ‘tolerant, understanding and patient.’ Lane Clark was the recipient for always treating others with respect, helping those around him with patience and never getting frustrated with his peers. The focus for April was simply, ‘Be kind'. Iahnelle Bejarin was chosen by the teachers for her inclusive nature, helping her friends and including all those around her. She always has a smile on her face and has a kind word to say.

Our big event for this term is our celebration for 200 years of Catholic Education. This will take place on Monday 24th May. We have a few things planned for this day; A liturgy, a picnic lunch and a whole school activity in the afternoon which focuses on the history of our school. Felicity Clark yesterday completed her recording for a virtual choir which will be presented at the diocesan mass. The school community will also view this recording in our school liturgy. Times have not yet been finalised, but we will endeavour to get this information out as soon as possible.

God Bless, Michele

CLASS NEWS Prep/Year I cannot believe how quickly time is flying this term! The Prep/One’s have been doing some amazing work and trying

their very hardest over the last couple of weeks! In English, Preps have been focusing on writing sentence and sounding

out the sounds they hear in each word. They have been doing a great job at this. Year One’s have been focusing on

recounts and making lots of detailed sentences. They have also been working really hard on their spelling and loving all

the activities we are doing to help with our spelling words. In Math’s, we have been working really hard on shapes and I

think it is safe to say that Prep/One are the 2D shape experts! We have also had lots of visitors helping us with our

Math’s. Two weeks ago, Mr Midgley came in and played an awesome math’s game with us. We had so much fun. Last

week, Mrs Shooter did a number talk with us, all around sharing. We even got to use pom poms to help us with our

thoughts! Last week we worked really hard on our Mother’s Day Liturgy and getting it ready for Friday. We loved being

up the front and running the Liturgy! We think we made our Mum super proud!

Year 2/3

Hi Parents and St Joey’s community! Hope you have had a great fortnight; I know it has been a busy couple of weeks for

us in 2/3. I Just want to say Happy Mother’s Day, and a big thank you to all the mums of 2/3. Your help and support

throughout the year to help your child achieve their best at school is always appreciated. I hope their mugs and cards

got to you in one piece on Sunday!

While we have been busy working in all subject areas this term, we have also been preparing for the Year 3 NAPLAN

tests which are currently being completed this week. The Year 3 students have worked very well and have had a great

attitude all week, trying their best and giving themselves time to answer all the questions.

Our Inspire Math’s development in our classroom is progressing well. We were very lucky to have an experienced

teacher from the Toowoomba Diocese, Kerri Shooter come out and model some math lessons in all the classrooms. The

students really enjoyed working with her and we discovered some new practices we can try in our classroom to improve

the courage culture in our math lessons.

Thank you to all the parents I caught up with last week during P/T interviews. If you were not able to meet or would like

a meeting in the future, you can always email me and organise a time to discuss your child’s progress.

Year 4/5/6 As always, we have been extremely busy in 4/5/6. Our class has been working hard on the topic of multiplication over

the past 4 weeks. Last Friday we had a visit from Rebecca Brownhall, our coach for our Inspire Math’s projects. Mrs

Andrews and I sat down with her and went through all the evidence we had collected and were all so impressed at how

the students did on their testing tasks. The students all had a bank of strategies that allowed them to answer the

questions and none of them felt like they were not able to attempt the task. What a great achievement! From these

discussions we are now going to be working on explaining our thinking and showing our thinking visually. Our next four-

week cycle will be on fractions.

Last week we finished off our design technology task from last term, which was to create a new item out of an old piece

of clothing. The students had lots of fun (sometimes with a hint of frustration) creating these items and I am so

impressed with how they all approached this task and got in and had a go. They look fabulous!

In our English unit for this term, we are working on persuasive writing and informative writing. We have been discussing

subjective language and looking at how we view different animals. The students have been engaged in learning about

different ‘ugly’ animals.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Pittsworth Choir Camp This year I am very proud to host the fifth three-day Pittsworth Choir Camp (Wednesday 2 June – Friday 4 June). The

event will be held at the Pittsworth Function Centre and the Pittsworth Town Hall and will feature 93 students from

eight Darling Downs primary schools … Pittsworth, Biddeston, Mt Tyson, Southbrook, Millmerran, St Josephs

(Millmerran), Greenmount and the School of Total Education (Warwick).

As co-ordinator of the Choir Camp, I am very proud to work with these young performers during an exciting three days

of making amazing choral music. With support from local teachers and volunteers, we will be rehearsing massed choir

songs to prepare items for our concert on Friday 4 June (commencing at 7.00pm in the Pittsworth Town Hall).

This is a unique event – something which is offered to our primary school students every second year. The Choir Camp

offers selected students the opportunity to spend time singing and performing with other talented young singers.

Congratulations to our talented singers – Penny Sanders and Jojo Wise – who will be representing St Josephs at this

year’s Choir Camp.
