UPCOMING WORSHIP SERVICES
Sunday, July 15, 2018, 11:00 AMSow in Tears, Reap in Joy
Rabbi Randy Sheinberg, Guest Speaker
Connections are made slowly, sometimes they grow underground. We cannot tell always by looking what is happening.More than half a tree is spread out in the soil under our feet.Penetrate quietly as the earthworm that blows no trumpet.Fight persistently as the creeper that brings down the tree…Weave real connections, create real nodes, build real houses.Live a life you can endure: make love that is loving.Keep tangling and interweaving…Live as if you like yourself, and it may happen…
These words of the poet, Marge Piercy, speak to the worship theme of this congregational year: Strengthening the Interdependent Web. Our 7th Unitarian Universalist Principle states that we covenant to affirm and promote respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. This web is what surrounds and connects us: family, friendship, love, creation, humanity, all living things, and the very earth itself - which is our common home.
While our 7th Principle is often said to be our “environmental” principle, it is not just about concern for the environment or the physical condition of the earth. It also speaks to the danger of extreme individualism. If we lose sight of our human interdependence, we are not as willing or able to care for humanity, other living things or the earth. Our concern for our collective well-being calls us to care for those in our congregational community in times of need. It has also called many to be heartbroken at the separation of immigrant children from their parents. When we affirm our connectedness, keep tangling and interweaving, we will enrich our lives – and enrich this congregation.

Friday night has come to Sunday morning! Join us for a multigenerational Worship Service in the toe-tapping, clapping, singing, dancing, Soulful Sundown style. Information about the special collection for the morning will be included in Happenings on Thursday, July 26, 2018.
At this time of year, the Jewish calendar turns to thoughts of tragedy, with the midsummer holiday of Tisha B’Av. What can we learn from the history and legend of the holiday? How can we turn sorrow in our own lives into joy or inspiration?

NEIGHBORING FAITHS
Below are some of the religious and cultural celebrations of our friends of other faiths. Unitarian Universalists value our multicultural and interfaith world – and learning about each other can help us know and appreciate one another.
• July 13 Ratha Yara is a major Hindu festival of Lord Jagannath, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. It attracts over one million visitors every year.
• July 13 – 15 Obon is the Japanese Buddhist celebration honoring the spirit of their ancestors. This is one of the biggest holidays in Japan with people traveling for family reunions.
• July 22 Tish’a B’av is a Jewish fast day commemorating the destruction of the First and Second Temples
• July 24 Pioneer Day is the holiday commemorating the arrival of Brigham Young and the first Mormon pioneers into Utah’s Salt Lake City Valley in 1847.
• August 22 – 25 Eid al Adha is the Muslim festival marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

A Fond Goodbye…My four years at Shelter Rock have been so rich—walking beside you in a journey of living faith. I have so enjoyed working with our many RE volunteers and our precious families. RE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We are a cooperative program which means we are as strong as the number of volunteers that assist in the RE program. As you complete registration, please consider volunteering. Here are ways you can volunteer in the RE program:
• RE Teacher: Currently we have openings in several grades. You can teach with a team every week or can work with a team two dates a month to teach.
• Classroom Support: We have a “two adults in the class” policy. From time to time we need an adult to fill in for an absent teacher to serve as the second adult in class. There is no teaching preparation involved, just your presence in the classroom.
• Summer Program: Our Arts and Nature at the Rock summer program during services needs volunteers to help with activities for this five-week program for Kindergarten thru fifth graders.
• Youth Program Volunteer: Programming for our Senior High Youth takes place outside of Sunday morning Youth Group. We would like to have volunteers for community service, (Midnight Run, Service Trip, Service Days) and youth conference advisors (District Youth Conferences, United Nations Conference, General Assembly).
Please see the RE registration form for other volunteer opportunities.
RE REGISTRATION 2018-2019
Please take a moment to register your child/youth for RE 2018-2019. Registering now will ensure that the RE staff can adequately plan for this coming year. Register online or contact Carson Jones at [email protected].

Everybody’s Got a Right to Live
“Everybody’s got a right to live; everybody’s got a right to live, and before this campaign fails, we’ll all go down to jail.” Since participating in the march and rally of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival in Albany on Monday, June 11 this song has been stuck in my head! We sang this song numerous times during the campaign events. It’s an old song, written and sung in Resurrection
City, the 3,000-person protest camp set up on the Washington Mall by participants in Martin Luther King’s Poor People’s Campaign. Today’s Poor People’s Campaign: A Call for Moral Revival is led by Rev. Liz Theoharris and Rev. William Barber. Our UU Association is among the many sponsoring organizations.
I like the song, “Everybody’s Got a Right to Live,” because of its history, it’s catchy tune, (you can listen to it here: https://tinyurl.com/ycvvdphz ), and the sense of commitment that it expresses to seeing the campaign through to the end. That same sense of commitment was evident in Albany on June 11. Six of us from UUCSR and two members of the Congregational Church in Brookhaven traveled to our state capital to make demands for education, jobs, income, labor, housing, and the right to organize for everybody! As we gathered in Albany, we knew that others were gathering in the capitals of 40 states and in Washington, DC, making the same demands. In Albany, we heard these themes reiterated in speeches by organizers, labor representatives, members of the transgender community, and ordinary people struggling to survive.
After the rally on the steps of the Legislative Office Building, we marched to the Fort Orange Social Club, known as the "third legislative chamber," a gathering place where politicians and lobbyists cut their deals. We marched in single file as we “followed the money,” bright green arrows and burlap bags filled with stones and marked with dollar signs. Once at the club, there was more singing and chanting. Then those who were prepared to do civil disobedience walked up the path and occupied the porch of the house. After some time had passed, the police ordered them to leave the property. When they refused to do so they were arrested for trespassing and taken to jail. According to NYS organizers, “In the first 5 weeks of the Campaign's #40DaysofAction, 114 have been arrested in New York State and well over a thousand nationwide. This is the largest sustained, coordinated season of nonviolent direct action in statehouses this country has ever seen.”
These actions have been taking place on Mondays since May 14 and will continue through Monday, June 18, culminating with a Global
Day of Solidarity and Sending Forth Call to Action Mass Rally in Washington, DC on June 23. But the campaign will not end on June 23. This is the beginning of a multi-year effort to address the evils of systemic racism, poverty, ecological devastation, and the war economy and militarism perpetuated by a distorted moral narrative that must be challenged. In the words of the national organizers, “We believe that when confronted with the undeniable truth of unconscionable cruelty to our fellow human beings, Americans will join the ranks of those who are determined not to rest until justice and equality are a reality for all.” (Read the demands of the campaign here: https://tinyurl.com/ybs7t9n8 ) I will be following this campaign very closely, and I invite you to do the same. News of the NYS Poor People’s Campaign can be found at https://www.facebook.com/NYSPPC/ and you can follow the national campaign at https://www.facebook.com/anewppc/

MEMBERSHIP MATTERSBen Bortin, Membership and Volunteer Coordinator
As we glide into the summer, I hope the early weeks have been rewarding for you. We are in a slightly more relaxed mode, but a rich array of programs is still to be had in the summer weeks ahead…a Lobster Fest July 21, a special symphonic concert August 5 and a guided boat trip of the Freeport Harbor among them.
It’s a delight to introduce three more members who have joined
our congregation over the past year. First, Janice Kuhl, who signed the Membership Book this past November 12. Her introductory interview was conducted by the new chair of the Membership Committee, Meg Cohen (congrats Meg!).
Janice Kuhl first visited UUCSR for a Reiki event years ago. She began attending Soulful Sundown and Sunday Worship Services. Janice grew up on Long Island attending Christian churches. She says that feeling comfortable with members and beliefs led her to join.
Janice is an animal lover and enjoys her work with the elderly as a health care provider. A most cordial – if belated – welcome, Janice, on behalf of all the members and friends here!
More recently, we were also honored with the joining of James (Jim) and Harriet McKenna on March 4. Jim and Harriet came to this congregation for the first time at a Messiah Sing several years ago. Although members of the UU Fellowship of Huntington, NY, and continue to be, they have appreciated the music program and the friendliness they have encountered at this congregation. They also have been very impressed with Soulful Sundown services.
Both grew up on Long Island – Jim in Uniondale, Harriet in Port Washington. Jim is of Catholic background, Harriet of Jewish. Harriet, in fact, has conducted a Seder service for years at the Huntington Fellowship, as well as a Yom Kippur service. When their son was born, they agreed that a Unitarian Universalist approach, to both traditions and others, was called for.
You may recognize Harriet as the harpist in our congregational jazz band, or from last fall’s Cabaret, if you attended. She also sings, and plays guitar, oboe, and piano. Jim enjoys gardening, both at their home, and at a community garden in the Huntington area.
A most cordial welcome, Jim and Harriet! Other members to be enthusiastically introduced in later newsletters.
Happy July to all, Ben Bortin

Community Garden Policy Review
Each spring over the last six years, a dedicated group of members has come together to work cooperatively in growing organic vegetables in the Congregation's UU Community Garden. The garden is located atop a small hill north of the Veatch House parking lot. Currently, there are 24 plots, each managed by a member of the congregation. Tomatoes, string beans, squash, strawberries, etc. are grown, as well as even kale and pumpkins through the early fall. But perhaps, it is time to review our garden policy. It seems that some person or unknown persons has killed our two newly planted cherry trees. No flowers or vegetables should have been planted at the base of these trees. The trees' nutrients were sucked away as these bandit plants grew and choked their roots to death.
In a policy approved by the Board of Trustees, the garden is overseen by the Green Sanctuary Committee. The policy articulates the guidelines in which the garden must be managed to include, but not limited to, only planting in the areas designated by the committee. Recently, the committee identified what had occurred around these newly installed cherry trees. Only mulch should have been around them. But other plantings were installed in an area that was not meant for anything else. These trees were purchased with committee funds as part of its annual program budget, and due to budget restrictions in this current fiscal year, may not have funds to purchase replacements.
The committee welcomes member participation in the garden, but asks that all interested parties work through the committee per policy, to ensure the garden is maintained properly. When we have other projects, such as tending the herb or butterfly gardens, email announcements are made to the gardeners. Then if anyone else wishes to assist, a time and place is set. If you are interested in gardening with us, we welcome you. This is the place where new gardeners can learn from the more experienced ones. Please contact committee member Mai Choi Steele ([email protected]). If you are not up to gardening, however, the committee welcomes you to stop by and see what can result from soil, seed and a little (or perhaps a lot of) sweat.
