Senior Sport and Recreation students have been exploring tennis as a recreational activity. Tennis is a popular Australian sport and many of the students have taken advantage of the Flinders Tennis Club over the years. Hannah from Tennis Queensland visited the school at the beginning of the term to provide technique and skill sessions for the Year 11 and 12’s. The students have taken the technique and skills sessions on board during class.

Over the past two weeks, the students have been travelling down to the Flinders Tennis Club on Wednesday and Friday to carry out their practical lessons. The students are finding tennis challenging but enjoyable, and are participating in modified and full games of tennis.

Year 3/4 Health on parade

From Thursday there will be a sign-in and sign-out sheet for Homework Centre.

Each Monday and Thursday from 3-4pm in the library students and staff can be found doing their homework, reading, having tutorials and finishing assessments. This is a great opportunity for students to do their homework under supervised conditions and to catch up on missed work and assessments. All primary students are encouraged to read to an adult when they attend whilst secondary students work independently on their learning. Food is not supplied and playing games with balls or computers is not part of our Homework Centre. Everyone is welcome. It is free. Parents are encouraged to come to the library to pick up their kids.

Today on parade the Year 3/4 students presented what they have been learning and that being sustainable is about being respectful and responsible. During their health lessons they conducted a litter survey and discovered 234 pieces of rubbish in our school after just one day! We need all hands on deck to make our school more sustainable!

RACQ Visit

The RACQ education team attended our school where we hosted Prairie, Cameron Downs and St Francis to learn about road safety. Students engaged in topics around the importance of pedestrian, rider, passenger and driver safety. Special thanks to our local adopt-a-cops Dylan and Sam for their support today as well. Well done to our RACQ presenters Janelle, Rhonda, Mel and Julie for such engaging presentations for our local students. Members of the RACQ education team attended our school on Tuesday and Wednesday to present a variety of topics to all of our students. Students used clickers to answer real time surveys, engaged with a 3D printed egg drop and had a pedestrian crossing set up in our library. Students tackled problems like pedestrian, rider, passenger and driver safety as well as making good choices with money. These programs were tailored to our local community as we hosted Prairie, Cameron Downs and St Francis Schools. Special thanks to our adopt-a-cops Dylan and Sam for their attendance and support over the course of the day. Well done to our presenters Janelle, Rhonda, Mel and Julie for such an awesome experience.

Book week has arrived! Students were invited to join Mrs Lindenmayer and Miss O’Brien under the trees to read our favourite books! What a great turn out today!

Hansel & Gretel Tour

Footy Doubles

The school has recently been investing in 21st century technologies for curriculum to develop students’ capabilities and has set up a makerspace next to the Year 3/4 room. This workspace has various equipment from 3D printers and drones to augmented reality and greenscreen video capturing technology. It is designed to be a modern workspace where things can be constructed, captured or programmed. To make the most of this space, we would like to offer interested students an opportunity to participate in a “Tech Club” where they are able to use and familiarise themselves with our equipment in a way that is not prescribed by curriculum. To ensure that Tech Club does not clash with Homework Centre, it will be held after school on Wednesdays from 3pm-4pm and depending on student numbers, ages and interest, hold sessions on various topics where students would explore the technologies in a hands on manner. Sessions could include:

Drones

3D printing

Computer Aided Drafting (CAD)

Laser engraving

Robotics

Coding

Greenscreen video

Stop motion animation

Augmented reality

Animatronics

Sessions will commence on Wednesday 28th August 2019 from 3pm – 4pm. Students have received permission letters today and these will need to be returned if your child wishes to attend.

Tech Club

On Monday the Prep-6 students were spoilt with a fantastic performance of Hansel & Gretel by Opera Queensland. Our students were entranced by the performers costumes, stage set, props and of course their voices. Humorous for both students and teachers, this performance was one we definitely enjoyed. Thank you to Opera Queensland for bringing this performance to us!
