Pend Oreille River School is an Alternative High School Program for 10th, 11th and 12th grade students in the Newport School District. In the past, students involved in the LEC program worked mostly at home. Instead, students now report regularly to the Pend Oreille River School and complete their studies on campus. Students in the Pend Oreille River School have individualized educational plans. Most students come to school for 3 hours a day. Others attend all day depending on their individual schedule. In 2015, Mrs. Waterman became a teacher for the Alternative High School Program. Mrs. Waterman has always had a passion for alternative kids. So, Mrs. Waterman was happy to make the change from being an Honors English teacher at Newport High School to being the teacher and coordinator of the Alternative Program. She doesn’t have to grade essays over the weekend or have a large amount of students in her classroom like she did when she was teaching English at NHS. Mrs. Waterman now works with students mostly on an individual basis. Plus, she works on administrative duties such as planning, counseling, and coordinating resources. She also works with teens and their issues involving substance abuse, those who are homeless and those who are behind in credits. Ultimately, the goal for these students is to graduate and have a path in life. Mrs. Waterman has decorated the inside of the building to make the feel of the room more comfortable and homey for the students. She also oversees the home school program for grades K-8. She loves conversing with kids. Mrs. Waterman gets to connect with the kids and help them to achieve their goals. Check Out the NHS Fab LabBy Kody Campbell and Cody Nichols

At NHS we no longer send students to “shop” class... we send them to the “Fab Lab!” And, amazing things are taking place there.

Newport High School’s Fabrica-tion Laboratory houses three CNC (Computer Numeric Control) ma-chines that are capable of creating amazing and intricate designs on a wide array of materials.

The machines include a Shopbot, which uses router bits to carve intricate designs into wood. The school has had this for four years.

We also have a Torchmate plasma cutter, which is used to cut accurate designs and shapes out of metal sheets. NHS has had this machine for five years.

The last CNC machine our school has is a Universal Laser Systems laser that can be used to create designs in wood, glass, and plastics. This is the third year that Newport has had this machine.

Computer programs control the machines, telling them where to cut, where to drill, and where to burn to create the desired piece.

The costs of the machines range from twenty thousand dollars all the way up to forty thousand dol-lars.

Look for future editions of The Griz Newsletter with more details on the amazing things being produced in the NHS Fab Lab.

“Every Griz, Every Day!”

Healthy Kids Snack Bags ProgramSince 2012, Newport Hospital and Health Services and Newport School District have teamed up to provide the Healthy Kids Snack Bags program.

The Healthy Kids Snack Bags program provides 3 healthy snacks a day for 7 days a week for school children in New-port and the surrounding area.

Children receive a healthy grain, a protein, a piece of fruit, and a 100% fruit juice for every day of the week.

Currently, elementary teachers identify children who would most benefit from the program.

NHHS currently serves 180 children through the Healthy Kids Snack Bag program. The cost is about $6 each week per child... that’s over $1,000 a week for all children in-volved.

NHHS and Newport School District will accept non-per-ishable healthy snack items as donation, but they would

prefer monetary donations to order the food weekly (as they have limited storage space, especially for items need-ing refrigeration). Some examples of snacks are: - Goldfish crackers (whole grain) - Apples, oranges - Whole wheat crackers - String Cheese - Granola Bars - Mini Pretzels - 100% Apple Juice

You may contact Newport Hospital and Health Services to arrange a weekly donation that will cover the cost of a child’s snack bag. You may even talk to your employer about establishing a payroll deduction opportunity to be sent to the NHHS foundation by contacting:
