A few guidelines about

scheduling…

We create the master schedule and hire teachers based on the

classes you select.

Challenge yourself, but do not overload yourself. AP, IB, and Dual

Credit classes tend to have homework and/or assigned reading

each evening.

Choose classes based on your interests… not GPA weight.

Items to consider as you choose your classes:

Do I have time to devote to each class on my schedule?

How well have I done in previous classes in the same subject?

Do I have a job and/or family obligations that will make work

completion difficult?

Am I choosing classes that are aligned with my career goals?

Credit for College

Take the AP course at Allen High School

Take the AP exam for the course in May

Passing score on the AP exam can earn college credit

Exams are scored from 1-5; 3 is passing, 5 is highest

AP courses not only save money– they save time. If the

college accepts your AP exam score, you won’t have to

take that class… or possibly several classes!

International Baccalaureate (IB)

IB is an option for students who are looking for a complete

academic program.

Is not just for students going to college in another country

(common misconception)

Similar to AP in rigor, workload, and opportunities for college

credit.

Different from AP in other ways:

Each IB class connects to other IB classes

Some IB courses are two-year courses

Not every IB course is open-enrollment

IB offers the option to earn a second HS diploma

Both oral and written communication are emphasized in each course.

5.0 weight on the GPA scale
