What is Advanced Placement (AP)?

• AP is college level curriculum, the same as at a college or university, taught at a high school in order to make students college- ready and eliminate the need to take course basics.

How hard is AP?

• Level of intensity:

• AP – 4-Year University Level Curriculum

• Dual Credit – Junior or Community College Level Curriculum

• Pre-AP – High School Level Material taught for high achieving students with a greater depth of understanding available at Junior High and High Schools

• Regular – Material taught on the appropriate grade level for the majority of students

Who Should Take AP?

• Counts as a 4th year of Math just like Pre-Calculus, Computer Science and Calculus

• Top 25% should take AP over Dual Credit to be ready to go straight to a 4-yr college

• Most college major degree plans require at least one Statistics class

Who should take AP Statistics?• Students interested in any of the following:

• Engineering – Chemical, Civil, Structural, etc.

• Science – Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.

• Social Sciences – Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, etc.

• Medicine – Doctors, Nurses, Veterinarians, etc.

• Healthcare – Hospitals, Pharmacies, Hospice, etc.

• Political Studies

• Business – Accounting, Finance, Management, etc.

• Mathematics, Computer Science, etc.

Is AP a Guaranteed College Credit?

• 3 College Credit Hours in the same course

• a 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Exam is accepted by a publiccollege or university (U of H, UT, Texas Tech, etc.)

• a 4 or 5 is accepted by most private colleges and universities (Rice, SMU, etc.)

• a 1 or 2 receives no college or university credit

• ***Over 90% of 4-year colleges

in the U.S. provide credit

and/or advanced placement for

qualifying scores.

What is Statistics?

• Definitions

• (1) the Mathematics of collecting and analyzing data in order to draw conclusions and make predictions

• (2) a branch of applied Math concerned with the collection and interpretation of quantitative data and the use of probability theory to estimate population parameters, such as: acres of rainforest, people on the Earth, when natural resources will be depleted, etc.

When can I take AP Statistics?

• Anytime after Algebra II, can be taken:

• Before/after/with Pre-Calculus

• Before/after/with Calculus

• Before/after/with Computer Science

• Before/after/with College Algebra

• SAT/SATII scores will go up since you will cover more of the tested topics

• Earn 3 FREE! hours of college credit in Stats

• A & M resident for 15 college hours is $24,024

• UT residents for Fall 2015 will pay $22,036
