Education News

Hello, Everyone – The first vestiges of spring happened while I wasn’t looking and now we are neigh on full summer. I have noticed a definite increase in interest to complete APICS certifications

while some folks find themselves with a bit more time to attend online classes, read, and prepare for the exams!

Coach’s Corner

This past few months has been challenging for most organizations to say the least, and Colorado

APICS is no exception. Our Chapter normally has face to face meetings with great speakers and instructors, great food, great friends and great Supply Chain networking and education. We are

working hard to have this networking, friendship and comradery virtually. If you have ideas, please

share them with me or any member of the BOD’s.

Fall Classes are starting in September for CPIM, and CSCP, and CLTD and Sales and Operations Planning begin in October. All our

courses, tours and PDM’s are virtual and safe. Take a look at our programs and see if there is something to help you in your career.

In addition to the courses, newsletters and Professional Development Meetings this summer, your Board of Directors have been working on a Not for Profit Budget for 2020-2021. We also created a Strategic Plan for this year and are working on area tactical

plans to support this year’s strategic goals. 2020-2021 strategic goals are:

Develop Southern Colorado offerings

Expand and promote Education offerings for certification and non-certification courses

Improve PDM experience and increase reach

Improve Membership and increase membership by 20%

Evan Beggs, VP of Membership, has left our BOD’s for this year. I want to publicly thank him for all his time, effort and dedication

to our Chapter the past few years. Evan has been a fantastic asset to our Chapter and we wish him the best of luck in his endeavors.

Bill Jessen, our previous Director of Facilities, was appointed VP of Membership August 1st, 2020. Bill will lead our membership efforts (Membership, Publications, College Students and Company Coordinators). Bill is full of energy, ideas and knowledge, he

is off to a fantastic start so far in August. Thank you Bill for volunteering to take over this important position and thank you in advance for all that you will accomplish!

Thanks for being part of the Colorado APICS Chapter. Please let me know if you have questions or need something from the Chapter. Hope to “see” you at one of our virtual events or courses this fall.

Roger Harris, CFPIM, CIRM, C.P.M., PMP, CSCP, CPSM, CLTD

“Colorado APICS Chapter courses have been a great resource through my studies in order to pass the CPIM exam.

With lots of ground to cover, it was great to work with others from multiple industries, have experienced leaders guiding us, and the additional case examples from Colorado APICS that were not in the book. These tools helped keep focus, understand

concepts outside of my industry, and a range of different situations.” Samantha Hanes, CPIM, Planner/Buyer, Gates Corporation

"Enrolling in and attending the Colorado APICS Chapter classes that accommodate the material in preparation for taking the CPIM exams was extremely beneficial for me. Roger & Honey do a fantastic job of giving real life examples of the

topics discussed, which can be extremely useful in some of the broader subjects like the ones found in SMR, that aren't as

straight forward on paper as some of the other topics. They also are very good about hitting the highlights and main points within each topic, which really helps breakdown and digest the material better." Carter Henderson, CPIM, Demand Planner

& S&OP Process Manager, Innospec, Inc.

What are Students saying about APICS

Education in Colorado?

“While I attended APICS classes, I was quick to realize the valuable resources being introduced. As a professional in the supply chain world, I was able to immediately apply a number of the topics presented by APICS to our day-to-day activities. APICS has set me apart from my peers, as I am now able to present ideas and tactics that are not readily understood by everyone. I am grateful for the knowledge I have received and am excited of the possibilities going forward” Dan Clement, CPIM, Distribution Center Manger, Brewers Supply

“Attending the 5 day CSCP course conducted by Colorado APICS is highly recommended for anyone preparing to take the APICS CSCP exam. Their knowledge and work related experience in the Global Supply Chain industry was a great help in teaching the concepts in a fun and enjoyable learning setting. There is so much information to study, without this class it would be an overwhelming task to complete on an independent level.” Stephen Robles C.P.M, CPIM, CSCP, Director of Materials & Warehouse Operations, Hunter Douglas

“I have been working in manufacturing since the early 1980s. Since the mid-1990s I have intended to get my CPIM designation but have never found the time or proper study methods that would give me the confidence to take the test. That and my jobs never really “required” that I be certified. I attended the CPIM class provided by APICS Chapter 81 and found the classes, study materials, and instructors to be first rate. In July I received my CPIM certificate and I only regret not doing it years earlier. Even though my jobs never “required” this certification I cannot think of any of these jobs I would not have been better at, advanced quicker and just been a more valuable employee had I acquired this knowledge sooner. In addition, the people that I met in class and the experiences they shared only served to make this that much more of an enriching experience.” Ken Fiore, CPIM, CLTD, Purchasing Manager, Nova Engineering

”I wanted the take the APICS CSCP certification to improve my understanding of the supply chain and increase my employment prospects. I discovered that I did several things well in my previous job but I learned so many new practices and ideas that I will be able to take with me to a new job. I completed my CSCP certification in 3 months and I thought that the classroom format worked very well with the five Saturday classes spread out over a few months, which allowed plenty of time for reading and study. Use of the online tools and resources, reading schedules, and chapter tests were also instrumental in my ability to successfully pass the exam and receive my CSCP certification. During the classes, the interaction with very knowledgeable instructors and fellow students from different industries was extremely interesting and edifying. They were more than willing to share their personal experiences and answer questions regarding the content of the class and how to put it in to practice in the real world. The Colorado Chapter 81’s high exam passing rate is a testament to the skill and passion of their instructors and the APICS Body of Knowledge course material. I am also taking the CPIM course and I would highly recommend it. These courses are valuable tools to greater success and advancing further in your career.” John S. Wood, CSCP, Purchasing & Warehouse Manager, PGI Services

“The APICS CPIM classed taught by the APICS Colorado Chapter 81 was outstanding. The knowledge the instructors bring to each class made understanding the material very easy. Every detail has been thought through from how the classroom is set up to help people become engaged and to stay engaged during the class, to bringing in specific instructors who specialize in specific topics, makes this a fantastic learning environment. I believe I will have the competitive advantage when taking what I have learned from the classes and applying it to my career.” Mike Hansen, CPIM, Air Methods

Mission: Barley, yeast, water, oak, and the pursuit of happiness. These make up the foundation of what we here at Boulder Spirits stand on. We’re a small Colorado whiskey company with big dreams, bigger goals, and the biggest pot still in the state. We’re here to make our best versions of American Single Malt Whiskeys, Bourbons, and Gins that our team can.

Around the country, as well as the world, the taste for American Whiskey has grown. The thirst for Bourbon stays strong, but this country is great at many things, and innovation is absolutely one of our greatest. This innovative mindset shared by distillers in every corner of this country has created an entirely new set of flavors to explore; these flavors all begin with one common source: 100% malted barley. Currently, there are over 130 distilleries that have ventured into the American Single Malt Whiskey realm, each with as different of an approach to creating whiskey from each other as the next. Single malt whisky is made in many, many countries around the world, but only the United States utilizes the virgin American Oak as a standard. We believe that is the truest defining characteristic of American whiskey.

member whose membership is coming up for renewal and you are actively seeking work within the supply chain management

field, you may apply for an extension of membership benefits through the unemployed membership extension program. To see if you qualify, please contact myself or go to https://www.ascm.org/unemployment-membership/ to fill out the ASCM

Unemployment Benefits application form.

In addition to helping our current members who are unemployed, APICS and Colorado Chapter 81 are also helping those who

are not yet members and are also seeking work within the supply chain field. Non-members seeking employment are also eligible for an APICS Membership for 6 months at a reduced cost. Applicants can choose between the CORE level at no charge

and the PLUS level for $60. To learn more, please contact Bill Jessen.

Lastly, as many of you heard during our August Professional Development Meeting, Evan has chosen to step down and I am your new VP of Membership for 2020/2021. I look forward to serving our chapter in the same capacity as Evan and I want to

thank him for all his help during the transition. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at (720) 344-1714 or

[email protected].

Respectfully,

Bill Jessen VP Membership, APICS Colorado Chapter 81
