Some extremely useful ps for parents: Pack a hand towel rather than a full-sized bath towel. There are no shower facilies so children will wash their face and hands and brush their teeth. Pracse unrolling and rolling up a sleeping bag with your child, as well as fing it back into the bag. Pack your child’s bag with them so they like the clothes packed and actually fit into them. Show your child how to re-pack their bag. A good suggeson is to show them how to roll up their clothes and place them into their bag rather than “shove”. Have empathy for our teachers. If you would not want your child to eat lollies at home before bedme and then become hyped up, please do not think it is okay to send lollies on an excursion where teachers are responsible for the safety and wellbeing of 97 children. Students have to carry their own luggage. Teachers have their own luggage plus first aid kits and folders to carry. Zoo staff do not assist with any loading or unloading of buses. Back packs are good to take however, “carry-on” size wheely bags are ideal as sleeping bags can fit inside these rather than be ed to a back pack. Bus drivers do not allow any food or drink to be consumed on the bus.

Student achievementsCongratulations to our Year 6 students who enthusiastically participated in learning activities preparing them for their upcoming roles as Peer Support Leaders. They learnt about the importance of being part of a team and how much stronger they can be working with others rather than working alone. Mr Thompson and Mrs Jedryhowski had some hilarious, as well as insightful moments, over the two days last week. Well done leaders!Magpie class students Brooklyn, Emily, Cooper and Lily have achieved Bronze certificates in Mathletics.Whilst year 6 were participating in Peer Support training, Year 5 students enjoyed some time as a grade with Mrs Morrison and Miss Pejcinovic. NAPLAN This annual assessment for Year 3 and 5 students in the areas of literacy and numeracy will take place next week from Tuesday, 14th May through to Friday, 17th May 2019. It is really important that students attend school on each of these days. Whilst Stage 2 and 3 teachers have been preparing students with NAPLAN style learning activities, absolutely no stress is placed upon students. These assessments are seen as just the same as daily learning tasks in which students participate, with the difference being that they are marked by someone else. Students in Year 3 and 5 are asked to send headphones in a plastic zip lock bag with their name and class clearly labelled on it. Please hand the headphones into your child’s classroom teacher ready for NAPLAN Testing.PSSA Gala DaysPSSA Winter Gala Days for Terms 2 and 3 are as follows: Friday, 24th May; Friday, 21st June; Friday, 16th August & Friday,20th September, 2019. Woolworths Earn & Learn ProgramWe are excited to be taking part in the 2019 Woolworths Earn & Learn program. During the previous campaign, we were able to purchase some great resources with the points we earned, thanks to you. From now until 25 June, 2019 you can collect stickers at Woolworths that go towards Earn & Learn points. For every $10 you spend at Woolworths (excluding the purchase of tobacco, liquor and gift cards), you will receive a sticker. These stickers can then be given to your children to collect on a special sticker card. Once it is completed, they can simply bring it back here to school or you can drop them into your local Woolworths collection box. The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of over 10,000 educational resources including mathematics and English resources, art & crafts materials and much, much more! We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful program. If you have any questions, please ask at the office.

Positive environmentsIt is important that our NSW public schools are positive environments and that parents and carers are kept informed of students’ progress and school announcements.

Parents and carers can expect:

• To be welcomed into our schools to work in partnership to promote student learning.

• Communication from school staff will be timely, polite and informative.

• Professional relationships with school staff are based on transparency, honesty and mutual respect.

• To be treated fairly. Tolerance and understanding are promoted as we respect diversity.

What our schools provideNSW public schools work to create positive environments for students, staff and the entire school community that support student learning. We strive to ensure that every student is known, valued and cared for.

Ensuring respectful learning environments for all members of NSW Public Schools communities.

Communicating with our schoolsOur staff will find a time to talk to you when they can give you their full attention. Please remember that while our staff are in class or dealing with other matters, they may not be available to answer your questions immediately.

Our schools and communities will make sure that written communication is appropriate, fair and easy to read. We encourage you to use email and social media appropriately to connect with your school and stay up-to-date with up-coming events in the school community.

Our guide for parents, carers and students provides useful information about the complaints process: education.nsw.gov.au/about-us/rights-and-accountability/complaints-compliments-and-suggestions/guide-for-parents-carers-and-students

To ensure the wellbeing of students, staff and the community in our schools, steps will be taken to address unacceptable behaviour. This may include restricting contact with the school community or, in more serious cases, referral to NSW Police.

Golden Pencil Award Term 2 Week 1

Golden Pencil Award Nominees1 Cockatoo Matilda Naisby 1 Currawong Isobel McGilvray1/2 Kookaburra Evie Melville 2 Lyrebird Tyler Cook3 Bowerbird Finlay Thomas 3/4 Falcon Ruby Marks3/4 Lorikeet Emily Lorenz 3/4 Magpie Brooklyn Casey5/6 Bellbird Eddie O’Brien 5/6 Cassowary Sophie Hughes5/6 Kingfisher Erica Smith

The Golden Pencil Awards were presented at Week 1’s Assembly. The quality writing being seen across the school makes teachers very proud. The worthy winners were:-

- Evie Melville from Kookaburra who wrote a descriptive text about what life on her pirate ship would be like.- Finlay Thomas of Bowerbird whose letter tries to convince Mrs Harrison we should have playground equipment at Appin PS.- Kingfisher’s Erica Smith whose emotive letter from a soldier on the front will bring tears to your eyes.

My Pirate Life by Evie Melville, Year 2 - Kookaburra

What would you do if you were a pirate? If I were a pirate, I would look nice and have beautiful long hair. I would be very tall, have a beautiful parrot, have one eye and have a big captain’s hat. I would share some treasure with poor broke pirates. I would be very excited and very jumpy, I would be friendly and respectful to other pirates. My delicious pirate food maker on the ship will be Daisy. She will make delicious food for breakfast lunch and dinner. Next is Shayla, she will be cleaning the dirty grubby decks. Branwen will be the amazing music player for the dinner nights. Mrs Bowden is the cannon firer, she fires cannons at the other ships. Layla will be the welcomer. Josh will be my servant and get the food from Daisy. And last but not least, I would tell everybody to walk the plank to a great white shark or megalodon. Don’t forget Ivy will never have any breaks hehehehe mwahhahaha. I forgot one more thing Hudson will put my an-chor down and then make everybody else do their very very very very very hard jobs and I will just sit down and relax and watch T.V. That is the end of my pirate story. Thanks for listening.

Letter to Mrs Harrison Regarding Equipmentby Finlay Thomas, Year 3 - Bowerbird

Dear Mrs Harrison,

I strongly believe A.P.S should get playground equipment. Here are some

reasons so you say ‘YES!’ We can improve our fitness, we can make new friends

and we can learn new skills. Think of the poor, defenceless future children to

come to Appin who love playground equipment. Where will they play? It’s also

not fair that in the past when there were 32 students in the school here they

got a playground and we don’t.

Firstly, I strongly extraordinarily believe we should get playground equipment

because us kids need fitness! Also we could become the fittest kids in the

world if we play there every day! It is very healthy and most people won’t get

sick, so there will be more kids coming to school per day. We also can stay alive

longer if we don’t get sick.

Secondly, I am certain we should get playground equipment because most people could make

fantastic new friends. No one will be lonely at all. It will also be an improvement on the PBL team. Instead of boring, it will be fun

with new friends all over the school. Don’t you hate having to walk around all those single students? By that I mean they don’t

have friends. If they have a whole group of friends, it wouldn’t be so hard to walk around them all at once.

Finally, I am certainly positive that this extraordinary school should get a magnificent playground so we can learn impressive new

skills. Some people will be very unique compared to others. Kids can also entertain their friends if they go to parks. I’d really like

to learn contortion and I’m sure other people in the school would too. The only way to learn con tortion is to stretch, get fit and

get strong. Another fantastic reason to get playground equipment just brought to you.

In conclusion, I am extraordinarily certain that we should get playground equipment because we can improve our fitness and

strength, we can make new fantastic friends and we can learn great new skills. Our fantastic principal needs to have a fantastic

view of our fantastic students on some fantastic new playground equipment!

Love Finlay

Letter to Emily

I am terribly sad for what I have been doing to other people although I really don’t have a choice! How is the farm? Is mum moving on now after dad passed away? Look I’ve got to go but I want you to know I dearly love you and I want to give you a big squeeze.

Love you lots,Your big brother Kevvy xxxx

Dear Ems,

I am not enjoying war but am very glad I am not hurt. How’s school? I wish I was at home watching you grow up like a good big brother. I wish I was next to you as we sing happy birthday or even just to hug you as you leave for school. I feel horrible as I may never see you again, be able to sit at the table with you and mum eating dinner.

Sleeping doesn’t exist for me as I have terrible nightmares and are scared of getting bombed or shot while I am asleep. It is hard to see people fall to the ground, hear the sirens or watch the aeroplanes fly over the ground. I wanna come home and be with my mates, watch you tumble, play with Sniffle Snuffle and go to the gym with mum.

Talking about Sniffle Snuffle, how is he? Did he get his vaccinations? Did you get rid of the fleas he had? Have you replaced your pet fish sky?

by Erica Smith, Year 5 - Kingfisher
