We were able to raise $1,170.70 which will go towards our Year 6 Farewell. ANZAC Day Our school will hold its Annual Commemorave Assembly, to recognise the importance of Anzac Day in our history, on our last day at school this term, which is this Friday 12th April 2019 from 10:30-11am. This will be a very quiet assembly this year as we are organising it ourselves unlike previous years where we have had assistance from Mr Ken Wright. On Anzac Day itself, our school will again parcipate in the Campbelltown Anzac Day Service. Interested students from K-6 and their families are invited to meet at Campbelltown McDonalds at 8am on Anzac Day to march at 8:30am. Students are encouraged to wear their Appin PS uniform and will march behind our Appin PS flag. Mrs Harrison will coordinate this ac- vity. This is an event that is steadily growing, of which we are very proud. Our thanks go once again to Bron King who will organise the wreath for our school students to lay in Mawson Park during the ceremony. Easter Hat Parade Our school has a wonderful tradion where paper hats are purchased as “flat packs” for each K-2 student and then assembled by a team of parent volunteers. Each Year 3-6 student is then assigned a “buddy” from K-2 classes and they work with this buddy to paint and then decorate colourful, creave and unique hats to wear at our Easter Hat Parade. This removes the stress of making hats from busy parents and provides equity for our students as no child misses out nor does any child have a hat any more expensive or cleverly craſted than another. We look forward to seeing many parents this Friday aſternoon from 2:00-3:00pm under our COLA where our K-2 classes will parade in their Easter Hats with their buddy who will be wearing some cute bunny ears. Our P&C Easter Raffle will be drawn at the conclusion of this parade. Thanks to our Kinder classes for coordinang this event. Happy Easter to all our families! Gymtascs School Sports Program 2019 As you are aware, each Thursday of Term 2, students in Years K-6 will have the opportunity to parcipate in a Gymnascs Sports Program presented by Gymtasc. Student achievementsCongratulations to Shane from Currawong class who is working conscientiously to improve his writing skills. Each and every student is to be commended on their attitude to their learning over this term. Students have settled readily into classes and enthusiastically set and achieved some literacy and numeracy goals. Whilst learning is so much easier to “see” in our K-2 classes, there have been many “lightbulb” moments, particularly in maths, from our older students. Keep up the positive attitudes towards being a lifelong learner! On a sporting note, we would like to congratulate the following students for making it into Zone Rep Teams for the Area Carnivals: Soccer: Jiselle Petrovski, Laila Walmsley, Ruby Marks, Claudia Blunden, Brady WilsonAFL: Brady Wilson, Ethan Matthews, Benjamin Dean, Joshua Booth, Joel Haeren, Jayden Barry, Noah DonovanBasketball: Rhys Perrett, Kieran Sylwestrzak, Ethan Matthews, Oliver Croker, Aleksandar Vranjkovic, Cooper MarounTouch Football: Jiselle Petrovski, Paige Ross, Ava HiltonRugby League: Seth Ward-Shallick, Harry Smith, Finn McEvoy-KingHockey: Sophie HughesWell done to all and keep up with these fantastic efforts!!Stamp Chart SuperstarsCongratulations to the following students who have filled their stamp chart or accumulated dojo points by demonstrating and following our classroom rules: Fairywren: Amelia, Madison, Jaxon, Oscar, Levi, AshtonKookaburra: Layla, Kooper, Noah G, Evie, Jonah, IvyLyrebird: Quinn, SierraBowerbird: Aivah, Cooper, Bailey, ZevaLorikeet: Joshua, Bailey, Luke, Alegra, Claudia, Laila, Charlee, Emily, Charlotte, Hayley, Isabella

This year’s program will focus on “Values” and will commence next term in Week 3 on Monday afternoons. Values are the important ideals and beliefs influencing our decisions and behaviours. They provide a framework to guide us in our interactions with others and strengthen our sense of self. Our values define who we are, as well as give purpose and meaning to our lives. School communities are significant environments for the socialisation of students into meaningful members of society. Schools use values education to build students’ social skills, resilience and sense of responsibility. Key outcomes include empowering students to take risks within safe boundaries and encouraging active participation in the school community.School Cross Country CarnivalThis annual event will be held on Monday, 6th May, 2019 at school for Year 2-6 students commencing at midday and concluding at 3:00pm. Even though we will invite all Year 2 students to participate, only eight year olds will be eligible to represent our school at Zone level. Eight to ten year olds will run 2 kilometres (two laps of our school track) and 11 and 12 year olds will run three kilometres (three laps of our you can assist us with the smooth school track). If running of our carnival, please see Mr Earnshaw. We generally ask parents to sit at a checkpoint somewhere along our course and enjoy the sunshine and encourage our winners. Our Kinder and Year 1 students will have their own modified activities commencing at 1:00pm.Stewart House DonationsPlease return Stewart House donation envelopes marked with your child’s name and class to the officeby this Friday, 12th April, 2019. Thanks Alli.Gardening Club DonationsThe Appin Public School Gardening Club are asking for donations of large ceramic pots (please no plastic pots) that are no longer required around your home. The gardening club is looking to plant a variety of different shrubs, natives and succulents and would like to use donated large ceramic pots to assist in getting these plants established (unfortunately, planting into the ground is proving a little difficult). The gardening club would be most grateful for any donations. Thank you!

Dear Beast

by Tabitha Monti, Year 1 - Currawong

Dear Beast,

I want to go home. I don’t like you or your lair. I don’t like this silly shirt and beanie because

I am a wild animal. I hate the little house that you made for me. Take me back at once! I

want to go back and hang in a tree. You shouldn’t have taken me from my home.

From Racoon (Tabitha Monti)

Portal Lighthouse

by Isabella Magnaye, Year 4 - Lorikeet

BAM, Flash, Crash!

It was a cold windy day. The trees were shivering and shaking. Out came Hayley, the bravest light

keeper ever. She just came from the store from buying lamp oil. On her way home, she drove and

looked through the window. Bam, flash, crash! “There it goes again,” said Hayley. When she got home,

the strong storm and lightning was hurting her ears.

Hayley went downstairs to her secret lab. No one knows there was a secret lab underneath the

lighthouse. When she got to her secret lab she got to her portal and portaled through it. When Hayley

arrived to her destination she found evil rainbows unicorns! What a shock! Hayley gasped in surprise.

Then, in any moment, they started following Hayley all the way through the portal, the lab, upstairs,

and out! As soon as they got out they flew to the noisy delivery ship. They started bombing in because

it was noisy! She had to think of something quickly. In just a minute she thought of something. She

knew that these evil rainbow unicorns hated light. Hayley got the lamp oil. It striked on. It came into

the unicorns evil eyes. The unicorns looked at Hayley. They all raced to her. She went downstairs to her

secret lab, right in front of the portal unicorns flew to Hayley as fast as they could. Hayley went to the

side of the portal. “There all in,” said Hayley.

Letter to the Panel Georgia Smith

Appin Public School

97 Appin Road

Australia, NSW, 2560

22/3/2019

Attention to the panel,

My name is Georgia Smith and I am a year 6 student at Appin Public School. I’m writing to persuade you about why Appin Public School would make a

brilliant candidate to be presented with the grant that you are offering. Our school and community will use this grant to purchase sustainable playground

equipment. I put forward the following arguments for why Appin Public School needs to be presented with a grant from the panel. The design of the

playground has been carefully and specifically designed to meet the departmental standards, the school and community needs and is cost effective. In

addition, I believe that the sustainable playground equipment will improve all students and community members’ physical and mental health. Finally, the

grant will allow us to provide more options for students and community members play.

The playground equipment that we would purchase with the grant money has been carefully chosen to meet all of the requirements as set out by the

grant and Department of Education requirements. I believe that this design (please refer to image below) will be the best design for my school. Here's

why this playground was chosen. It is suitable for ages from 5 - 12. This playground has twisty and swirly slides for the kindergarten to year 2, monkey

bars to test the 3 - 6 strength, stepping stones to improve your balance, and lodes of fun for everyone. This playground is exceptionally safe for my school.

This playground meets all departmental standards there are no swings or flying foxes. I believe the cost of this playground is outstanding because it even

includes soft fall and a shade sale. This way you can give us the exact amount of money. ($50,000) So much easier than guessing the amount of money

that you would have to give us.

Having a playground for all to playground for all to play on will improve students and community member’s physical and mental health. This is important

for everyone! Exercise releases important chemicals called endorphins and serotonin. These chemicals also help reduce feelings of loneliness and isola-

tion. This would be exceptionally helpful for my school. If you exercise regularly, you can release any stress and symptoms of mental health conditions like

depression and anxiety. Being physically and mentally healthy will increase the size of the hippocampus, a part of the brain responsible for memory. This

will be great because when we go to high school we will remember our primary school journey and all the things we learnt. If we have good well-being

at school we will have less chance at getting disease or injuries.

A playground at our school will also help us to improve our physical

strength and skills. If the school and community gets a playground

children will improve muscle tone and strength. For example the

monkey bars would help us develop upper body strength and the

stepping stones will improve our balance and coordination. This

The playground equipment will allow us to provide students and the community with options for play.

Giving students choices of play spaces is a must do! All students need to experience some form of phys-

ical exercise and if we had a playground on the school grounds students can choose to play in that area

instead of another. A playground would also give the community a safer option during school holidays

when the school is open to the public. We have some play equipment across the road from the school,

however students and the community would enjoy playing on something new and fun. There are very

few options at Appin Public School for students for play. Students can either play touch, soccer, play with

hula hoops or skipping ropes. But what about those people that don’t want to play any of those things.

A playground would be a perfect option for my school and the Appin Community.

On the basis of the undeniable arguments presented, I strongly advise you to support our school and

community in giving us the grant. If we receive the grant it will go towards a playground that meets all

of the requirements, it will help develop children’s physical and mental health and it will offer our com-

munity more play options. Thank you for taking the time to consider Appin Public School for this grant.

Kind Regards,

Georgia Smith
