Applicant Visit Day

Your Applicant Visit Day will start at 10.00am and finish at approximately3.30pm. The following programme outlines what you can expect fromyour day:

10.00-10.30am Arrival, Registration and Refreshments

10.30-11.30am Welcome Talk including information regarding student finance, accommodation and the Students’ Union

11.30-12.30pm Campus and Accommodation Tours

12.30-1.00pm Department Welcome and Overviewincluding a brief talk from a current studentabout their experiences

1.00-2.00pm Department networking lunch

2.00-3.30pm Subject Taster Session – Applicant OnlyorParents Information – Parents and Visitors

Subject Sessions

This day will give you the opportunity to find out more about your chosenprogramme and meet tutors and current students from the Departmentyou will be studying in. The subject taster sessions have been designed togive you a hands-on experience of your chosen course.

These sessions are for applicants only

Edge Hill Business School Accounting(for BSc (Hons) Accountancy and BSc (Hons) Business and Management(Accounting) applicants)

Accountants have to make judgements as well as calculations; they haveto make decisions based on much more than profit and loss. This hands-on session will allow you to work in groups, looking at how accountantsmake decisions such as pricing a product and highlighting how the coursegives you the skills to apply the knowledge you will learn in the real world.It also introduces a number of skills such as team-working, problemsolving, negotiation and time management.

Business and Management(for BSc (Hons) Business and Management, BSc (Hons) Business andManagement (International Business), BSc (Hons) Business and Management(Human Resource Management), BSc (Hons) Business and Management(Leisure and Tourism) applicants)

The Global Business ChallengeThis fast paced session is designed to get you thinking about the issuesthat face global organisations as they develop products and competeagainst each other. This session will include team work challenges againstthe clock as you work through a number of common business problems.

Marketing(for BSc (Hons) Marketing, BSc (Hons) Marketing with Advertising,BSc (Hons) Marketing with Public Relations, BSc (Hons) Business andManagement (Marketing)

In this session you will look at the launch of new products in the phoneand hi-tech markets; thinking about the role and meanings of brandswhen communicating with consumers, and the Public Relationschallenges faced by a company experiencing a crisis.

Department of Computing Physical Computing (for BSc (Hons) Computing, BSc (Hons) Computing (ApplicationDevelopment) and BSc (Hons) Computing (Control and EmbeddedSystems) applicants)

Physical Computing is a creative framework for understanding humanbeings' relationship to the digital world. This area of physical computingexplores the ideas behind everyday items such as DVD or gamescontrollers. In this hands-on session there will be an opportunity toconstruct simple circuits that will be driven by a microcontroller, readinginput through some devices and generating output through others.

Programming (for BSc (Hons) Computing (Information Systems), BSc (Hons) Computing(Systems and Software), BSc (Hons) Computing (Networking, Securityand Forensics), BSc (Hons) Computing (Games Programming) and BSc(Hons) Information Technology Management for Business applicants)

Living in a society where programs can automate your work, preventingmistakes and making you more productive, it’s clear to see that writingprograms can give you the maximum control over your computer. Thisfun interactive session will introduce you to programming; using softwareto build a small interactive program in a 3D virtual world. This will enableyou to rapidly construct an application, exploring ideas of programmingand visually observing the outcome.

Multimedia(for BSc (Hons) Web Systems Development applicants)

Digital audio, and particularly music, is an integral part of our everydaysensory experience and computing has had a profound impact on thisover the last few decades. In this session you will discover how digitalmusic is created, distributed, and consumed and discuss some of thesocial and legal implications for the mp3 generation. You will alsoexperiment with specialist music software used to create genre specificmusic and digital audio for multimedia presentations.

Department of English and History Creative Writing

How to write a poem, short story or memoir in five minutesThis programme encourages you to explore your own creativity,supported by enthusiastic and internationally known academics. Thissession will guide you through the process of producing a creative piecefrom scratch.

English Language

This session explores a fascinating aspect of Linguistics. In groups, youwill examine and discuss examples of the English Language, in writtenand audio form, that represent different forms of current English. Youwill investigate how linguistic data is gathered, and the diverse methodslinguists use to analyse it. The session will also explore your attitudes todifferent language varieties.

English Literature

Vampire ControversiesThis session explores the endurance of the figure of the vampire inpopular fiction. Beginning with a ‘real life’ encounter with vampires inthe 1730s, consider how vampires are represented and used to exploresociety’s fears?

English

This session will examine a combination of English Language and EnglishLiterature. You will have the opportunity to participate in a sessionexploring the English Language in written and audio form. In addition tothis, enjoy an introduction to ideas both familiar and new associated withEnglish Literature, encouraging you to think about their functions in arange of gothic texts.

Film Studies

The Cult FilmFor decades critics and scholars have found it difficult to pin down whatexactly a ‘cult film’ actually is. This session will begin to explore the notionof ‘cult cinema’ through critical work, discussion and viewing.

History

Reading visual historical sourcesThis session will take one historical image and with your participationdemonstrate how such sources can be interpreted and consider theimportance of context. This activity will also be a means of showing youthe nature of academic study of history.

The Department of MediaAdvertising

In this session, you will explore a creative brief in small teams. Thechallenge will be to devise a message and be as inventive as possible in theuse of media channels to excite and engage a target audience. You willalso be given the opportunity to create a mini-advertising campaign fora contemporary brand, letting yourself go creatively and having some fun.

Animation (for applicants to all Animation and Motion Graphics programmes)

The production and application of Animation, SFX and Graphics can takemany forms and be developed using a variety of traditional andcontemporary techniques and processes. Using the latest digitaltechnology this interactive workshop will provide you with anintroduction to both the theoretical and creative principles of Animation.

Film and Television Production

This session will explore how scripts are developed, how the productionin the TV studio works and demonstrates how a script is formed. You willalso get a chance to try your hand in the TV studio and set up a shortproduction.

Media, Film and Television

This programme is ideal for those who enjoy watching films and televisionas much as making them. In this taster session you will explore howdisability is represented in contemporary media before considering howto develop a character for a convincing script.

Media, Music and Sound Music, Sound, Enterprise

Public Relations is all about using the right communication channels inorder to deliver a message to your audience, however, sometimes you arefaced with a problem and you need to get your message right very quicklyand under pressure. This session will allow you to work in groups andgive you a chance to try your hand as a ‘crisis manager’.

Television Production Management

In this session you will be introduced to the role of the Television ProductionManager. You will take part in a television ideas generation workshop,similar to those undertaken by development teams in industry.

By rail from Liverpool Central to Ormskirk station on Merseyrail's Northern Line or Preston toOrmskirk station on Northern Rail.

The Edge Link bus service is a fast, cheap and reliable way to get to the campus fromOrmskirk Bus Station. During term-time this service runs every 15 minutes, 8.05am –5.50pm, Monday-Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) and 8.05am – 5.50pm on Saturdays.
