CURRENT WASTE MANAGEMENT(case: palm oil mill)

• SOLID handling

- Empty Fruit Bunch current incineration or mulching (no EFB treatment)

disadvantages :

- loss of oil in the EFB

• LIQUID treatment

- Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) or effluent from tapioca industry

current open lagoons digestion

disadvantages :

- methane emission to - loss of oil in the EFB

- unutilized potentially renewable energy source

- Empty fruit bunch

current utilization for boiler

disadvantage :

- EFB contains high moisture (lower calorific value)

- methane emission to atmosphere (global warming gas)

- loss of potentially renewable energy source

- large area required for ponds

Biogas Project in Indonesia

• Domestic utilization: Currently there is morethan 13,500 unit of biogas digester are installedto meet domestic needs (cooking and lighting).Biogas is produced from animal manure;

• Commercial/industry sector: Biogas program is• Commercial/industry sector: Biogas program isimplemented through the commercial basis. Thebiogas unit system is built in a large scale, usuallyto generate an electricity. Biogas is producedfrom palm oil mill effluent (POME), tapioca effluent and municipal solid waste.
