New technology in exploration (2) Rock engineering, including underground technology (14) Separation and mineral beneficiation (15) Automation and monitoring in mining, including mine safety (7) Recent development of new materials processing technology in Japan (6) Pyrometallurgy (8)

The volume reflects the continuing high interest in the development of new fields of research and production in the mining and metallurgical industries, and should prove to be a valuable source of reference.

Randol Gold Forum 1988 Randol International Ltd, Colorado USA, 1988. Price $75. 359 pps.

This volume contains the 72 papers presented at the conference of the same name held in the U.S.A. in January 1988.

The book contains a wealth of information on the treatment of gold and silver ores, and is arranged in the following sections:

Heap leaching (14 papers) The environment, waste disposal and regulations (7) General (5) Comminution and preconcentration (7) Leaching (7) Treatment of refractory ores (13) Recovery of gold and silver (17)

Randol Perth International Gold Conference 1988 Randol International Ltd, Colorado, USA, 1988. $80. 320 pps.

This is the proceedings of the conference held in Perth, Australia in October 1988, and contains 110 papers. Considering that this conference was held so soon after that at Scottsdale, U.S.A. (see above), it is remarkable that so many generally excellent papers were presented. The organisers are to be congratulated on putting together such a volume which should prove invaluable to all those involved in the treatment of gold and silver.

Applied Measurements in Mineral and Metallurgical Processing G. Sommer (Ed.) Pergamon Press, Oxford, 1989. Price $55 (£30). 147 pps. ISBN 008 0363857

This is the Proceedings of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) Workshop, held in South Africa in October 1988. The volume contains the following fifteen papers:

Measurement of slurry properties and load behaviour in grinding mills (M.H. Moys, South Africa)

Estimation of grinding charge volume and milling parameters by the use of a conductivity bolt (L.A. Vermeulen and F.A. Schakowski, South Africa)

Closed loop media charging of mills based on a 'smart sensor system' (J.A. Herbst et al, USA)

Realtime measurement of the size distribution of rocks on a conveyor belt (T.B. Lange, South Africa)

384 Book Reviews

'ISRADEMT' Proceedings of the International Symposium on Research and Development in Extractive Metallurgy of Tin and Related Minerals R. Othman, C. Padmasuta, P.R. Khangaonkar and V.N. Misra (eds.) Universiti Sains Malaysia and SEATRAD Centre, Ipoh, Malaysia, 1989. M$40. 428 pps. ISBN 967-9962-04-0

The 25 papers presented at the 'ISRADEMT' symposium, held in Malaysia in October 1988, were reviewed in the Conference Reports section of volume 2 number 1 of Minerals Engineering. The papers deal with all aspects of research and development carried out in recent years in the fields of both primary and secondary extraction of tin and other related metals, with a view to increasing efficiency and throughputs and lowering costs.

This volume contains all the papers presented, and also the panel discussion which closed the meeting.
