STEM Academy Talent Show
On Thursday March 24th, STEM Academy hosted its third
annual talent show and let me just say, it was by far better than
last years’ show. This year, it was electrifying and kept the
crowd at the edge of their seats for the entire night. The event
showcased spoken word, dance performances, solos, duets
and even an animation viewing. The students of STEM
Academy showed that they are amongst some of the most
talented students in the district (watch out Tyson) and they all
have extraordinary potential to pursue an arts career if it
interests them.
The Talent Show featured the debut of the Serenading
Scholars “Cover to Cover” (members of the Book Club-
Advisor, Ms. Chelsea Vick) who surprised much of the crowd
with big voices coming from little bodies. Throughout the show,
some members of the audience were encouraged to come on
stage and display some of their dance moves. The show was
spectacular largely in part to the hosts, William and Lazanie*.
The Talent Show also doubled as a fashion show with
the categories of : Pretty in Pink, Sportswear, and Date Night.
These fashion expos generated large applauses and screams
from the crowd due to the dazzling outfits the students
displayed. Well coordinate and well executed by the Student
Council and volunteers. They made the show the masterpiece
it was and we can’t wait til next year!.

NOT IN OUR HOUSE!
During the weekend of March 4-6, STEM Academy's very own robotics Eagles Apex team 5310 took on a quest at Mount Olive. There they battled dragons and defended their castle fiercely! Well, something like that. Armed with their robot N.I.O.H, team 5310 competed against over 70 different teams for a chance at Nationals at this year's FIRST Stronghold competitions. They've made many friends with other teams and absolutely love the experience. There is another competition scheduled for April 1-3 at Bridgewater Raritan and they can't wait to defend their castle and take down the enemy. With their gallant knight, fair maiden, and colossal eagle, this team can take on anything. To say it was exciting would be an understatement because it's not just a game, it's a sport! ~Vania Haynes

Getting To Know Our Vice Principal
Most of you know that we have a new Vice Principal in office and her name is, Melissa Jones. Ms. Jones started the school year as the United States History I teacher, but was later appointed as the Vice Principal in November, 2015. The transition from being the U.S history I teacher of many sophomores to being our Vice Principal was a big one for Ms. Jones; but it was something she has always seen herself doing. From a young age, Ms. Jones, always knew she wanted to be a teacher. Coming from a big family, she would help to teacher her cousins whenever they would come to her house. It was here the Ms. Jones we all know and love was born. With a harbored passion to learn, young, first generation American Jones attended college, where she completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Political Science and later her Master’s in Education and Administration. Presently, Ms. Jones is pursuing a doctoral program at Caldwell University along with her duties as Vice Principal. Ms. Jones continued her journey, as a teacher in New York for three years, then moved to East Orange where she continues to share her knowledge and love of learning to all those she meets. Here, she raises her three children of ages 5-11 with her husband. Like her family did with her, Melissa tries to instill a sense of adventure and community in her children. Apart from teaching, Ms. Jones and her husband are active within the community, being a part of the Presidential Heights Association.

TV Award Shows
These past two months there were two TV award shows that were all over the news. The Grammys and The Oscars have been the topic of discussion. The topic that made it headline on newspaper and on news channel was whether the Oscars were too white or not. A majority of the nominees for the Oscars this year were white. This was questioned by Jada Pinkett Smith as her husband, Will Smith, wasn't nominated for his astonishing performance in the movie Concussion. She decided to boycott the Oscars for not having diversity amongst nominees. She said she would not attend, nor watch, the Oscars.
Spike Lee decided to join the boycott and he too decided to not attend the Oscars. The question that many ask was “Is it so serious to that we don’t have diversity?” and “How can we have diversity within our nominees when there aren't even enough movies starring any Blacks, Hispanics, or even Asians?”
As for the Grammys, it was a big night for Kendrick Lamar and Taylor Swift. The night began with Taylor Swift performing her song “Out Of The Woods.” Throughout the night, there were amazing performances from the live broadcast of the broadway performance Hamilton, Lady Gaga’s tribute to David Bowie, and the conscious performance of Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick Lamar was nominated with 11 awards but only won five. Taylor Swift made history as she joined the elite club of people to win Grammy;s Album of the Year more than once.

The entertainment industry and his family, friends, and fans lost music icon Prince on April 21, 2016. Prince Rogers Nelson was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor. He was a musical innovator and known for his eclectic work, flamboyant stage presence, extravagant dress and makeup, and wide vocal range.
Fans all over the world came to gether to mourn his passing, many singing perhaps his most famous song, Purple Rain.
