Gospel (John 21:15-19)

When they had finished breakfast,Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me morethan these?" He said to him, "Yes,Lord, you know that I love you." Hesaid to him, "Feed my lambs." He thensaid to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He saidto him, "Yes, Lord, you know that Ilove you." He said to him, "Tend mysheep." He said to him the third time,"Simon, son of John, do you love me?"Peter was distressed that he had saidto him a third time, "Do you love me?"and he said to him, "Lord, you knoweverything; you know that I love you."(Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.Amen, amen, I say to you, when youwere younger, you used to dressyourself and go where you wanted;but when you grow old, you willstretch out your hands, and someoneelse will dress you and lead you whereyou do not want to go." He said thissignifying by what kind of death hewould glorify God. And when he hadsaid this, he said to him, "Follow me."

This is the truth. Peace be with you.

Peter, Do You Love Me?

Q. John 21:15-17 records Jesus asking Peter three times if he loveshim, Was this Jesus’ way of letting Peter know he was forgiven fordenying Him three times?A. That’s a reasonable interpretation. But John 21:15-17 also contains afascinating use of words that we miss in the English because we only have oneword for love. In the Greek there are four words for love, two of which are used inthis passage, and all they have different meanings. In John 21:15 when Jesusfirst asked Peter, “Do you truly love me more than these?” He used a word thatmeans to be totally given over to someone irrespective of the response. Wewould call it unconditional love. But when Peter responded, he used a differentword for love, one that describes the love one has for a brother. When Jesus asked the second time it was the same, with Jesus using the greaterform of the word and Peter responding with the lesser one.The third time, Jesus downgraded His expectation and changed His question touse the same word Peter had used, allowing Peter to respond in kind. In John21:17 Peter said,“Lord you know all things. You know that I love you.” By this,Peter knew that the Lord was aware of his inability to respond unconditionally toGod’s love. From this interaction we learn two things. The first is Peter’s admission that it’simpossible for man to love God with the same intensity that God loves man. Thesecond is that God understands this and accepts man’s weakness.

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians (2,1-10)Your blessing father,

Brothers and sisters,

You were dead in your transgressions and sins in which you once lived following theage of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now atwork in the disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the desires of our flesh, following the wishes of the flesh and the impulses, and we were by nature children ofwrath, like the rest. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he hadfor us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ(by grace you have been saved), raised us up with him, and seated us with him in theheavens in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurableriches of his grace in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have beensaved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works,so no one may boast. For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the goodworks that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.

Praise be to God always.
